Heated scenes as frustrations boil over in Norwich’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday

There were heated scenes as frustrations boil over in Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night.

The Canaries halted a six-game Championship losing streak with a draw against bottom-placed Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

The Owls went ahead thanks to an absolute firecracker from Barry Bannan, dominating the first half. Liam Manning’s half-time sub, Mathias Kvistgaarden, levelled from Josh Sargent’s assist.

Both sides missed late chances, ending in a draw, Norwich climb above Sheffield United, leaving the Steel City clubs (who play each other later this month) in the bottom two.

Manning remains winless against Sheffield Wednesday in eight league games against them as a head coach.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“I’m frustrated and proud because I think the boys delivered a great game. How the boys are working together, how they push each other, how they help each other – it’s a good example that what you cannot do alone, you can do as a team.

“It was the best offensive game we have played this season – from the beginning, we had the courage, we wanted to have the ball, make a difference with the ball, and then we had a fantastic goal from Barry.

“In transitions we created good chances, and in the second half we had one fantastic build-up, there were a lot of passes before Jamal had a big, big chance.

“I’m proud of the performance, defensively we were strong, we created more in offensive transitions. There were still a lot of errors there but we’re moving in the right direction.”

Norwich City head coach Liam Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“We’ve stopped the run of losses, which is important, and deserved a point. It was a big evening for them with a full house and they’re a good, honest team.

“We should have gone ahead really early on with a great opportunity [for Sargent] and conceded a fantastic finish from someone who over the years has caused me issues in games and done that numerous times.

“We didn’t respond again, that’s an issue. We get anxious, we get nervous, we get passive, we lose intent, but showed a response second half that we need to show from the start.

“We had numerous opportunities, and where we’re at at the minute, it’s not about trying to play beautiful football, it’s about having real intent and purpose with your actions.”

On an apparent argument between himself, Kenny McLean and Shane Duffy during a first-half injury break:

“It was heat of the moment – Kenny was fine, me and Kenny were chatting. I think it was frustration more than anything, we spoke about it, dealt with it, and that’s it.”

Manning, per Sky Sports:

“We should have gone one-up. It was a great opportunity for ‘Sarge’ and a fantastic finish from Barry Bannan, to be fair.

“We didn’t play with enough aggression and intent, which we spoke about at half-time. And then I thought we came out second half and showed a response.

“We showed some fight, we showed some purpose, we played forward, ran forward, created some really good opportunities, albeit we conceded a couple of decent ones as well.

“For me, we deserved a point. I think the fact we came out second half and showed a response is exactly what we needed to do.”

Twitter users reacted to the heated scenes as frustrations boil over in Norwich’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday…

@wbunny: You cut off the bit where Duffy threw his water bottle at Manning…

@jamievans97: Geezer snapped someone on the half way line for no reason and got booked, not sure he has a right to complain about anything

@Jparker7398: JHT was accused of not having control of the dressing room, well it seems Liam isn’t doing much better on that front either. #ncfc

@jgraver7: Lack of self-awareness given that no other Head Coach would have him in the squad.

@quietlifeplease; What an absolute fucking shit show.

@GabSutton: Much has been pinned on Liam Manning, when it comes to Norwich, and I get that’s part of football when results are as such, but these players have to look at themselves. That kind of behaviour, throwing your arms up, from one of your most senior players in these circumstances is so unprofessional.

@scoles64: Think some leadership is needed !

@AlwynOTBC: cant just be me who thinks Kenny being the one doing the coaching in that circle is the most concerning part of this #ncfc

@potterscope_: So unprofessional and it’s clear to see Duffy is just as bad off the pitch as he is on it

@jgraver7: However, Manning chose to bring Duffy back in a desperate attempt to cover for his useless tactics so he really only has himself to blame for this.

@Championshippod: If a single video sums up #ncfc at this moment in time….

@tompauley8: Ah yes. I’m so glad we bought back the ‘leader’ Shane Duffy. Could easily have been sent off in the first half. He’s a stain on this football club. #ncfc

@nelsonben: It’s totally embarrassing that Shane Duffy is anywhere near this @NorwichCityFC side. The blokes behaviour on and off the field is an absolute disgrace. How have things got so bad? I feel ashamed to support this club currently. #NCFC

@georgywalks: I am afraid it comes down to him and knapper!Says he won’t throw players under the bus then throws them under. Blames previous purchases but also issues with current ones. Way I see it is that players are not being played in correct positions and they are not playing for manager

@meds89: Duffy unprofessional, don’t believe you

@Steven_Garnham: Let’s all moan at the 1 bloke who looks bothered about how shit we are

@TotallyTettey: no wonder hes been hooked at half time, let alone him being shite

@switfc: Just when you think it can’t get any better. It always does with these #itfc

@Con_Green10: Says everything about the club atm. completely spineless, the blind leading the blind!
