Hartlepool keeper’s massive howler punished by superb lob from Barrow’s Josh Gordon

Hartlepool United keeper’s massive howler ended up being punished by a superb lob from Barrow’s Josh Gordon on Saturday afternoon.

The 28 year old striker took full advantage of an awful mistake from the Pools keeper, bending one in from over 25 yards.

Top scorer Josh Gordon reached double figures for the season as his Barrow went on to win 3-1 against Harltepool, and now they look to be surprise League Two promotion contenders.

Pete Wild’s side, now up to fourth in the fourth tier standings, wrapped up the points by netting all three goals in the opening 21 minutes.

Ben Whitfield netted a second for the afternoon inside the opening 10 minutes for the Bluebirds as they looked too much to handle for Hartlepool in the opening quarter of the game.

Pete Wild’s side then went 3-0 up with Pools already resigned to losing as they succumbed to their 11th defeat of the season to slip to the bottom of the League Two table once again.

But the Hartlepool boss Keith Curle confessed he felt slightly aggrieved in the build-up to Barrow’s second goal when referee Lee Doughty didn’t wave Tumilty back onto the pitch having received treatment with the assist for the goal from Josh Kay originating from that area of the field.

“It’s not a good start,” said Curle.

“The first goal is disappointing with poor decision making from Ben, but he understands that. The second one, in my mind, there is a little bit of controversy as our player gets injured, we get the foul, the player needs to receive treatment and has to go off the field of play.

“We take the free kick long into the opposition’s half – why is our full-back not allowed to go on and resume his position?

“We remonstrated with the linesman and the next thing you know the ball lands in his vicinity, they have a touch and open play up, switch the play and then goal. In my mind I don’t see the reasoning why the player cannot come back onto the field of play.”

Curle did say his side were second best for the opening 45 minutes as the game ran away from them, and the interim manager highlighted the need for his team to start games better.

“I understand where we are but I’m not going to start feeling sorry for myself and I’m not going to allow the changing room to feel sorry for themselves,” said Curle.

“There’s players in there in the second half that played for a little bit of pride, I’ve not got a problem with that. We’ve got to start games with that mentality.

“There’s nothing wrong with playing in the opposition’s half making decisive decisions.

“There’s a way of being a good player which is making good decisions. We haven’t got a changing room full of players that make consistently good decisions and it’s affecting us.

“It’s basics. But we show, at times, we do make good decisions, which is the frustrating part, then there’s other times you’re thinking ‘wow’ does this lot even know each other? As a team they’re not helping each other.

“But I’ve said to them, come the end of the season, allied with myself and the coaching staff, they’re going to have a large say in who’s sat in that changing room, sat in that shirt, representing this football club and keeping this football club in the league and they’ve got to understand that.”

Pete Wild praised Hartlepool’s ‘never say die’ spirit vs Barrow after finding themselves 3-0 down at half-time at Holker Street.

“I did talk about keeping up that tempo and doubling our stats [in the second half],” said Wild.

“But they came out and had a go. One of Hartlepool’s big traits is they never say die and they always come back and score late on in games and one of the things today was they’ve come and had a go in the second half and they got after us.

“It’s easy to play when you’re losing, don’t get me wrong, but they had a right go in the second half and we didn’t match their levels which is frustrating but, luckily enough, we’d done what we needed to do in the first half.”

“We had a long discussion about how we started the game. One of our biggest traits is how we start games and to come out and add that ruthless edge to that start was a fantastic start to the game,” said Wild.

“We’ve got a good, honest, bunch of footballers who try their best every week. I can never fault their effort and their application. We pride ourselves on how we start in home games and you saw that today.

“It was an unfortunate mistake from the keeper. I’ve been bigging Ben Killip up all week and how good he is and how he makes really good saves. It’s an unfortunate mistake, but it’s a really good finish from Josh.”

This also comes days after Danny Rose’s second-half match winner against Hartlepool United last Saturday got over ten million views across the internet…

With ten minutes left on the clock and the score goalless at The Lamex Stadium, resourceful Rose’s sneaky strike earned the home side all three points to keep Steve Evans’ men within touching distance of the top of League Two.

After featuring on ITV & Sky Sports, as well as international media outlets Varsky Sports (Argentina), BeFootball & Footballougue (France) and Overtime (USA) plus many others, the extraordinary goal has reached over ten million views on social media and counting.

Twitter users reacted to the Hartlepool keeper’s massive howler punished by a superb lob from Barrow’s Josh Gordon…

@Erdem_Konyar: There are 3/4 teams that really bring the level down in league two. Shocking recruitment and playing style. If Notts County and Wrexham both make it up; the league will be very interesting next year.

@Boropod: Danny Rose ghost is still haunting Killip.

@14thefrog: Step one to him repenting should be cutting his ponytail off. Goalie with a ponytail? You gotta earn that nonsense, until then it’s a normal hair cut, broken nose, scars and all that stuff.

@SJ_1927: Surely this is match fixing
