Halifax poke fun after beating Chesterfield to put their promotion party on hold

FC Halifax Town poke fun after beating National League leaders Chesterfield to put their promotion party on hold for now.

The Shaymen delayed Chesterfield’s hopes of securing promotion on Wednesday night with the Spireites suffering a 4-2 defeat against Halifax.

Paul Cook’s side only need a point to secure their place in League Two, but an in-form Halifax side were too much to handle, moving in the play-off places with their seventh win in eight matches.

Chesterfield had taking the lead through top-scorer Will Grigg, who got on the rebound after the ball bounced off the post. However, their advantage was short-lived as Ryan Harker scored a quick-fire double, putting Halifax ahead.

Just before the break, Halifax extended their lead to 3-1 with a goal from Andrew Oluwabori, who then assisted Aaron Cosgrave in the 66th minute to make it 4-1.

Chesterfield managed to get one back through James Berry-McNally with 11 minutes left on the clock, but their comeback efforts fell short, and now all eyes are on if Chesterfield can get that all important point on Saturday when they welcome Boreham Wood.

Halifax tweeted after their win over Chesterfield, saying:
“Match postponed ❌
Promotion party postponed ✅”

But it seems while many thought it was a bit of lighthearted fun, others took to criticise the club…

“I thought in the first-half we took our time getting used to the pitch,” Cook said post-match, via Derbyshire Times. “We grew into the game, we looked dangerous, exciting, we scored a good goal. And we just have had a bit of madness that we have had in us all year, there is no point beating about the bush. We were disappointed going in at half-time, especially the third goal, because it gave us a mountain the climb.

“I thought were excellent in the second-half, I really enjoyed watching us, I think that is as good as we have played for a period of time. We created chances, we were strong, we switched play, we got balls in the box and we had big opportunities to score. Sadly, we have this achilles heel where we come away from that. I felt if we had nicked that third goal I felt we could have got that point that we all craved.

“We are really disappointed because we had really good support. They have been amazing all year and now we look forward to game at our stadium on Saturday that we have all craved and clamoured for many years. It will be a vocal atmosphere, the TV cameras will be there and we are looking forward.”

When questioned if the night gave him food for thought ahead of 2024/25, he added: “I won’t even discuss next year. We are in this season and we should concentrate on this season. I don’t think that question is very fair on the players in a season where we are breaking records. We should be singing these lads’ praises and not speaking about next year. I am a big believer in what we do over a season rather than a week. We started the campaign wanting to get promoted and, as its stands, we are still very much in the driving seat.”

On the pitch conditions, Cook said: “I think we took our time getting used to it. By the time we did, I felt we played it really well in the second-half. We were much more braver and that is what we spoke about at half-time.”

On Tyrone Williams and Will Grigg getting injured: “We will assess them right away. They don’t look great, to be fair.”

Twitter users reacted as Halifax poke fun after beating Chesterfield to put their promotion party on hold…

@Gloucester_City: This tweet demonstrates not only a lack of class by an official club media member; but also why the game causes its own problems. Of course it just could be someone has had a drink and lost all sense of proportion and reason of a sporting encounter.

@positiveshaymen: This tweet demonstrates not only symptoms of acute anal retention, but also why supporters of Mickey Mouse outfits should not preach to real football clubs on points of etiquette. Of course it just could be that someone hasn’t had his chill pill and lost all sense of reason 🤷
