Group of Norwich fans give unhappy reaction over Ben Godfrey’s move to Ipswich

Group of Norwich City fans give unhappy reaction over former player Ben Godfrey’s move to the Canaries’ rivals Ipswich Town.

Godfrey goes out on loan to the Tractorboys from Atalanta, and it seems to have stirred a negative reaction among some Norwich supporters.

Godfrey had previously played for Norwich, being part their promotion to the Premier League in the 2018-19 season before his transfer to Everton.

His move to Ipswich, especially considering the competitive nature of East Anglian derbies, has likely left many Norwich fans feeling betrayed or disappointed.

One fan even put out this video, saying “All of it, ruined, and for what”, other Norwich fans say “Enjoy another relegation on that CV”, “Shame on you!” and call him a snake, as can be seen in the fan reaction towards the bottom of this article…

STATEMENT:

Ipswich Town is delighted to announce the loan signing of defender Ben Godfrey.

Ben, 26, joins from Italian club Atalanta on a deal until the end of the season, becoming the Blues’ first signing of the January transfer window.

The two-cap England international gained considerable Premier League experience with both Norwich City and Everton, before moving to Serie A in the summer, and will link up with his new teammates in the coming days.

“It’s been an exciting couple of days and I’m just delighted to have signed and can’t wait to meet the lads and get started,” Ben told TownTV.

“I have really enjoyed speaking to the Manager (Kieran McKenna) and to have the opportunity to work under him now is something I’m very excited about. I’ve watched a lot of the games from the first half of the season and you can tell from those that the group is a tight one, full of players giving everything to achieve their goals.

“I’ve not played as much as I would have liked so far this season, but I feel ready to contribute and am looking forward to getting out there.”

After spending time with Middlesbrough as a youth player, Ben began his senior career with hometown club York City, before making the switch to Norwich in 2016.

During his time at Carrow Road, Ben enjoyed a successful loan spell as he helped Shrewsbury Town reach the League One Play-Off Final in 2017/18 before becoming part of the Norwich side promoted to the Premier League the following season.

Following the Canaries’ relegation a year later, Ben joined Everton in October 2020 and made a total of 93 appearances for the Toffees, prior to joining Atalanta last summer.

Town boss Kieran McKenna hopes new signing Ben Godfrey will make a significant contribution after signing on loan.

The defender became the first addition of the January transfer window after joining from Italian club Atalanta until the end of the season.

“That’s a positive for us and it was an area we wanted to add to given Axel has missed such a big part of the season,” Kieran said, following Ben’s arrival.

“We don’t really have the same profile in the squad and Ben fits that and is a good, experienced player.

“He has played a good amount of Premier League football and is really hungry to come in here and help the group and be an important part of the team.

“We’re happy to have him in and he will make us stronger for the second half of the year.”
