Grimsby left saddened after 26 year old midfielder Callum Ainley gets diagnosed with cancer

Grimsby Town left saddened after 26 year old midfielder Callum Ainley gets diagnosed with thyroid cancer, the club have confirmed.

He is being ‘supported by everyone at the club’ at this tough time with the player recovering from surgery at home.

Grimsby look forward to seeing Ainley, who hasn’t made an appearance since the 16th of December in a 1-1 draw away at Newport, back in training by the end of February.

The ex-Crewe lad made his debut for the Mariners back in September in a 3-0 defeat against Wrexham and has gone on to make seven appearances so far, with Grimsby sitting 19th in the League Two table.

He departed Crewe last summer after eight seasons with the club, making nearly 300 appearances between 2015 and 2024 – before joining Grimsby Town in November 2023.

Crewe Alexandra tweeted upon hearing the news: “We are all with you, @Callum_Ainley ❤️ #CreweAlex”
