Glasner disputes ‘harsh’ penalty; Maguire holds head despite no contact from Strand Larsen’s boot

Oliver Glasner disputes the ‘harsh’ penalty awarded, and Harry Maguire holds his head despite no contact from Strand Larsen’s boot.

A video of the moment has since gone viral, getting over 14,000 likes and 3 million views within 3 hours of footage being posted on Twitter.

The game saw Maxence Lacroix put Crystal Palace into early lead, only for Bruno Fernandes to level with a controversial penalty on 57 minutes with Lacroix sent off.

Benjamin Sesko netted a winner shortly after, to see Manchester United climb above Aston Villa into third, while Palace sit 14th.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It is decisive when you are 1-0 up and then concede a penalty and then have one player less. The foul was outside the box and the foul should be given where it starts, not where it ends. Matheus Cunha was very clever. We tried everything to get the equaliser and we were in good situations four or five times.

On tiredness in his squad: “I think we played three days ago and that impacts the game when you are one player down and the crowd gets back into the game and 1-1.”

On Ismaila , externalSarr’s miss: “A problem in the last weeks is that we are playing good parts in games but not consistently over 90 minutes. We always have to make changes to our back three since Marc [Guehi] left. There is no consistency in the back three.”

On better performances: “Absolutely. The performances were not that bad. We’re not that efficient and that ruthless in attack. The way the team is fighting, even here under difficult circumstances, gives me faith until the end of the season.”

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes speaking to Sky Sports: “It feels like a big result, we were behind and had to show some character. We were a little bit slow with the ball but it was a good three points and that is the aim.

On the VAR decision which led to Maxence Lacroix being sent off: “The referee told me straight away that it was a penalty but he was trying to determine if it was a red card. We know that when it is a push or pull and no intention to go for the ball, it is a red card.

On his penalty against former team-mate Dean Henderson “I worked with him, I was with him when he had the spell at Forest. He even told me at the end that he wanted to go to the same side as he did last week and save it. Lucky for me, he went to the other side.”

On his assist for Benjamin Sesko: “He’s a very good player, we just wanted to get his confidence. He is a kid that wants to improve. He is never just happy with a goal. He is very aware that he needs to score week in, week out for this club. Hopefully he will have more goals between now and the end of the season.”

On top four ambitions: “There are a lot of games to go still and it is important that we don’t feel that we are in the position that we need to be. We need to make as many points as we can.”

Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards speaking to Sky Sports: “When you start off with a big 1-0 lead early on, you want to ride the momentum. After the red card, they rode their momentum. Overall disappointed but proud of the performance we put in today.

On the VAR decision which led to Maxence Lacroix being sent off: “When you’re playing away at a place like Old Trafford, more than likely the home team is going to get a call like that but that is the nature of the game. Matheus Cunha is a smart player, he knows how to play and if you feel a tug in the box, you’re going to go down so credit to him for that. It hurt us a bit of course going a man down but you can’t take anything away from our performance today. Regardless of how many people we have on the pitch, we still put in a good performance.”

Twitter users gave their reaction after Glasner disputes the ‘harsh’ penalty; for Man Utd, and Harry Maguire holds his head despite no contact from Strand Larsen’s boot…

@tickers23: Players should not be able to get away with blatant cheating like that. Retrospective yellow card

@Quiggers_03: Is it any wonder people are flocking to watch non-league football instead of putting up with this nonsense !?

@CPFC_GEO: Ref is right in front of it btw 🤣🤣 Genuinely embarrassing how they get paid to make decisions like these

@97RedSlots: @GNev2 any comment on Harry Maguire playacting and simulation a head injury ?

@HLTCO: Genuinely laughable. 😂

@maxpalace03: Utterly fucking embarrassing. Deserves a ban for that. They were doing shit like this all game and nothing was done.

@RachelVillavox: Not to mention the red card and penalty decision which actually went to VAR and stood! What hope for clubs not deemed the top 6 when this goes on??!!

@BearCPFC: What’s the point in VAR if brain dead officials are still going to come to the wrong conclusion, ruined this game. But the way decisions were going, it’s nothing but big club bias. Joke league

@CpfcWill: I have to say, spending your hard earned money on supporting a football team to have games consistently ruined by referees/VAR is becoming increasingly unbearable. I don’t understand football anymore…

@Sitdown_Jim: @HarryMaguire93 seriously are you proud of yourself? Pathetic #mufc #cpfc

@Barbara4003: This is what VAR should be penalising!

@AtTheBridgePod: Instant booking for cheating, that would stamp this nonsense out of the game. What a total clown he looks.

@DarrenR_85: Cheating prick 🤬 Hope this gets shown to him on how embarrassing it is Clown 🤡

@lufcsteve6: This is becoming normal practice for every footballer because they usually get away with it. What happened to the panel that was going to look at cheating because that’s what this is. 3 game bans is the only way to stop this.

@ThePalaceWay: This is just blatant cheating lmfao. To get the foul for this is outrageous. #CPFC

@henryswainjourn: He actually wanted a red for this too. Cunha, Mbeumo, Bruno, even the ‘big boys’ like Casemiro and Maguire. Rolling around constantly and the ref just melts under the pressure of the home fans. It’s actually so frustrating.
