George Earthy copies Tommy Conway’s celebration as Bristol City come back to beat Middlesbrough

George Earthy copies Tommy Conway’s celebration as Bristol City come back to beat Middlesbrough in the Championship on Friday night.

Tommy Conway was booed on his return, scoring the opening goal and giving it back to the taunting home fans.

Then Earthy came off the bench and scored twice in the second half, copying Conway’s celebration with the winner.

The result means a fifth straight defeat on Middlesbrough, with City moving into the top six, with 49 points from 34 games, Boro are 11th, with 44 points from 33 games.

Bristol City manager Liam Manning told BBC Radio Bristol:

“A large percentage of the game the performance was excellent.

“I think if you look at first-half – really good control, pressed really well, lacked quality in and around the box which is what we spoke about at half-time.

“For all the control we find ourselves a goal behind and that was the message second half, keep doing so much of it, add the bit at the end – the ruthlessness, add the composure add the belief that you can do it and credit to the lads because they carried on playing the way we want the second half.

[On the league table] “Let’s see what it looks like in 12 [games]. Enjoy the journey, be excited, you want fans to be buzzing about it, and rightly so and I want the lads to be excited about it.”

Manning, per Sky Sports:

“Nothing will change because we have reached the top six. As ever, we will enjoy the victory for a couple of days and then it is back to more hard work.

“That has been the mentality for a long time now and is the way we manage the growing expectations among our fans. The most exciting thing for me is the undoubted progress we are making.

“We have a group of players who respond positively to any setback. I am delighted for George Earthy tonight because he sums up the work ethic of the squad.

“He is on loan from a Premier League club, yet there is not the slightest ego about him. This is not the first time he has made an impact from the bench.

“I thought the team were very good throughout the match. In the first half we just lacked that bit of quality in the opposition box. There was an element of frustration at half-time, but not a lot needed changing.”

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick told BBC Radio Tees:

“We’ve done it too much. We’ve been ahead in games this season and come away with nothing at the end of it and that’s what’s hurting us.

“I thought it was understandable the way the start of the second half went.

“I thought they had a bit of the ball but it didn’t feel like they were hurting us and were getting frustrated and I thought we defended when we had to, and closed the space off well for the most part.

“The first goal changes a little bit the swing of the game and then the second goal the free-kick that they get is just the totally, totally wrong decision.”

Carrick, per Sky Sports:

“We’ve been ahead in a lot of matches and come away with nothing. That’s what’s hurting us.

“Their first goal changes the game and the second from the free-kick was totally the wrong decision from the referee. Their player was looking for contact.

“The situation we’re in, we need things to go our way to give us a bit of a leg-up. Instead, we got a bad decision.

“It’s not a good run at all, but things could have been a lot different. Professionally, I’ve got an immense amount of pride. I care for the club, care for the supporters and hugely care for the players.

“We’re hurting really badly at the moment, but we’ve got to fight our way out of it.

“Sticking together is not the issue. In terms of effort, application and willingness to do the right thing, it’s all there, but the results aren’t.”

This is how social media users reacted after George Earthy copies Tommy Conway’s celebration as Bristol City come back to beat Middlesbrough…

@AnalysisBCFC: I’ll always appreciate @tommyconway__ reaching out to me when I’ve been struggling recently. And why not celebrate scoring a goal like that after being booed. I would expect one of our players to do the same. Top man

@EyalBlokervitch: Exactly! I booed him and then laughed me nadgers off when he scored & celebrated in front of S82, who had been giving him dogs abuse all night. Fair play to him! Find it weird that grown men think they can call someone a wanker all night then start crying when he gives some back!

@richbrown71: @tommyconway__ celebrating like that got the crowd going … played right into our hands. Walk back to the halfway line with a bit of class and it could have been a whole lot different. But you have no class as we all knew when you f*cked off!

@lpmoffatt:
Tommy I was a massive fan.
Tommy we grew you.
Tommy you scored against us.
Well done.
Did you need to react like that @tommyconway__?
We’ve now beat you twice this season.
Learn some fucking respect.
Up the City, Tommy.

@Blinkfan180: Let’s see Conway celebrate now the p****

@bristol_red: Sometime just have to say it. For me that was brilliant. For some reason never thought we would lose and Conway acting like his did was the cake and earthy and his reaction after his second was that bloody lovely icing! Come on you reds @BristolCity

@bcfc_beth: Hang it in the Louvre 🥶

@rmace1986: If you’re gonna be a shit-house, you’d better finish the job, eh Tommy? Big, big move though.
