After learning that the gay footballer deleted his account, fans took to give their reaction, so much was tweeted about it that the #GayFootballer hashtag was trending…
I’ve doubted the authenticity of the account and think it’s more of a PR stunt. Just noticed that I’ve also been blocked. Never said anything derogatory, so pretty surprised really! Guess it is a fake after all. pic.twitter.com/iQRAdKdIVE

I'm starting think this has been a piss take from day one…

It’s so sad that the #GayFootballer felt he couldn’t come out to the world because of the abuse he’d receive… genuinely confused why “fans” feel they couldn’t support a gay baller at their club? why does someone’s sexuality affect the job they’ll do? #EFL

I hope that the person behind #Gayfootballer is getting the support he needs from his friends and family. ?️?

So that “I’m about to come out gay” footballer was all a hoax then? Account deleted and today was meant to be the day. Sad. #gayfootballer

@leehunt4: I would not Normally post things like this here but been Following like many with interest
After all this Build up and to Delete this Account Is a great shame Hoax Or True @FootballerGay could have Broken the Ice and been a rock for many Gay/Bi Football Players #gayfootballer
@carlcnash: So as expected @thegayfootballer is a hoax. Not sure what you expected to achieve from this apart from minimising your boredom, but what you’ve actually achieved is undo years of work in enabling pro footballers who are gay feel safe to come out
@TheRealLiamCook: So the #GayFootballer won’t be coming out after all. It isn’t for me to say whether he really did plan to announce his sexuality or if it was just an elaborate hoax by a very sad individual, but this should not be an issue in the modern game. Ability matters, not sexuality
@robbiebaillie: Hoax or not, #gayfootballer has generated the conversation about inclusivity in football, which is just great. I hope if the person on the other side was genuine that they get the support they need irl!
