Gateshead STUN York in major twist at both ends of the National League table

Tuesday night saw Gateshead manage to STUN York City in what is a major twist at both ends of the National League table.

The Heed moved out of the relegation zone, two points clear of 21st Brackley, with a 3-1 win over the promotion hopefuls, Brad Nicholson putting those hosts ahead on the 41st minute, went two up on 65 minutes through Ash Boatswain, then Louis Storey headed home in the 85th minute from a free-kick.

Ollie Pearce got one back for York in the third minute of added time, they remain two points behind leaders Rochdale, who have a game in hand.

Stuart Maynard said, per York Press: “They’ve been incredible this season, this is the business end of the season, this is when it all gets tense and its when all of us can get frustrated.

“We’ve all got to stick together, I said to the group in there that we’ve got to stick together and make sure that we come back stronger.

“That’s the biggest key and that’s the fans as well, they’ve been absolutely incredible this season.

“We’re going to need them more than ever come Saturday at 3pm, like they were last Saturday at home.

“We need their voices, we need them behind us, we need them backing us.

“We’re all in this together, it’s a journey that we’re on, we’ve created a lot of memories along the way so far.

“We want to create bigger memories, that’s the key.

“The end goal is for us to get promoted this season, we have a real belief within the group that we can do it.

“We’ve got to keep fighting, that’s the biggest thing, to keep fighting all the way until the end.

“That’s what I liked about the team tonight, as much as it is disappointing to lose, we’ve got that fight and we keep going no matter what, all the way until the end.

“We probably lacked a little bit of quality in the final third when we got there.

“In the first-half, we got into some really great positions and the final cross or final decision probably wasn’t at the level that it’s been at.

“I thought their goalkeeper was man-of-the-match, I thought he was excellent.

“He was coming for crosses, made some saves, I have to give credit to the opposition as well.

“When we reflect back on the goals, I think we’ll be disappointed, really disappointed in the manner that we’ve conceded them.

“A frustrating night, we’ll look back, reflect, watch it back and they are three soft goals for the level that we’ve been at all season.

“There’s a big changing point in the game, Zak [Johnson] at the back post, he’s just got to score.

“We had some big chances tonight, and we’ve been super clinical this season, so I can’t be too harsh on the lads in that sense.

“It’s one of them, it’s frustration, because as much as we wasn’t at our best tonight, we still created big, big moments.

“We probably could have come away with something from the game, but for me the goalkeeper is man-of-the-match.

“They are down, really down.

“It’s got to hurt, and it hurts all of us.

“We’ve got pride, we’ve got pride in everything we do and we know how much it means to the fans, who tonight have once again come in their numbers and backed the boys all the way until the end, stayed till the end and clapped the boys off.

“The group deserves it, because they’ve been absolutely outstanding all season.

“When you lose a game, it’s how we react and bounce back.

“That’s what we’ve done really well this season, even when we’ve drawn games, we’ve bounced back.

“There’s not been too many losses, I think that’s the fourth loss of the campaign and it’s an incredible achievement for the group.

“There’s a long way to go, there’s seven to go and that’s a lot of football and a lot of points.”

Here’s how fans reacted after Gateshead STUN York in a major twist at both ends of the National League table…

@parry_josh1: As a Gateshead fan you’re the worst team I’ve seen here all season

@rafc_olly: throwing more money at it might help 😘

@Charlieleach47: SECOND AGAIN OLE OLE

@CoreOfNufc: Wheels have fallen off, always next year lads x

@mattbdale: As a dale fan that is a great result for us York didn’t turn up tonight but got to give credit to Gateshead fighting for their lives at the bottom and to get that result is massive. Still plenty of twists and turns to go and we still got to beat Scunny yet

@dylan_rafc: Are you arsenal in disguise?🫵🏼

@James81224699: not good enough lads. from start to finish

@bobbinsoncrusoe: Not in a rush to criticise a side that’s scored a million goals and already on 90+pts, but finding it hard to ignore both ‘wobbles’ recently have come after the title chase pivoted to being up to us.

@DerwentReds: Poor team selection. Had that feel of Alty away last season when it was announced

@Man_Utd_Forever: Subs way too late, just like at Boreham Wood. Maynard’s done a terrific job but this has been a fatal flaw of his. Batty’s deserved way more minutes since the Wealdstone clinic (was at both that game and BHW), and no idea how Banks didn’t start. Bring Felix back too: freshen up!

@LRbix: No words simply just no words how can I put this absolutely fucking unbelievably massive win there

@MagpieMediaX: Staying up

@RyanBro11591296: Luke Hannant, Ed Francis and Connor McBride that ones for you xx

@JohnBar28691234: You’ve got to survive after a performance like that. All the best for the rest of the season, and thanks.

@chrislord: Well done Rob, looks like he will keep you up, @crawleytown worth a look 😂

@SteakAndDalePie: I always thought Gateshead was trying to one up Rochdale on being the most depressing town ever. Now I see we are two sides of the same coin and bring balance to posh tory towns like York and wherever the fuck forest green are from. Love you guys

@ItsJustTheMess1: Rob Elliot Masterclass Absolutely Exceptional From Them all Even All The Subs Superb Result Against Them Onto Yeovil Now Full Belief 🤍🖤

@Heedonistic_: Some huge performances tonight. Fenton John continues to impress and Adam Desbois is so composed #HeedArmy

@joshgfc23: fergy moth for me, was so good. played with so much freedom today, much better

@chrisjbaines22: Naming my first born Gateshead FC
