Gary Neville rinsed by viewers over goalgasm commentary as Salford knock out Leeds

Gary Neville has been rinsed by viewers over his goalgasm and commentary as his Salford City side knock out Leeds United.

The Carabao Cup second round match came down to an eventful penalty shootout with Ossama Ashley scoring his spot kick to send the Ammies into the third round.

It finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, Pascal Struijk netting in the 76th minute after Matt Smith found the net just after the half hour mark.

Penalty kicks it was, to which it finished 9-8 in favour of Salford, Jamie Shackleton missing Leeds’ vital sudden-death spot-kick, the ball smacking the bar, then Ossama Ashley scored the winning kick – dramatically at the second attempt after Karl Darlow had moved off his line to save the first.

The game was televised live on Sky Sports, however, rather unusally, Gary Neville was on co-commentary for the Carabao Cup clash, as he is a regular pundit and on co-commentary for Sky’s Premier League coverage but isn’t typically involved when it comes to this competition.

Did he and Sky milk it massively? You bet they did.

The ex-Man Utd playerwas in the gantry to call the action in a game involving the club he owns with other members of the Class of 92, but also in attendance was the likes of Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Nicky Butt also present at the game.

Neville was previously a CEO for Salford, but stepped down in Octpber 2022.

After the League Two club went 1-0 up, Gary reacted like the classic goalgasm he produced when Fernando Torres netted for Chelsea away at Barcelona in 2012.

Sky also caught his reaction to Salford winning on spot kicks, but plenty of viewers weren’t happy that that Neville was commentating on his own team and took to social media to make their views clear.

“I mean the answer you want me to give you is Manchester United,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports when asked about who he’d support if Salford drew Man Utd.

“Obviously us lads as owners of this club, it’s our club – we love Manchester United and we love this club as well.

“We’re hugely ambitious about what we want to do but we now that Manchester United has given us everything in our lives.

“To be able to have the opportunity to play against Manchester United, I’d love it to be here at this ground because I think it would be special.”

Salford boss Neil Wood said post-match: “It was a hard night against a really good team, a really difficult team to play against with many good players so we had really had to work hard defensively, we got our noses in front with the goal which helped.

“We knew they were going to come out strongly and come out against us in the second half, there were moments where we had to defend really well. Once it goes to penalties it can go either way, we’ve tasted both sides of that in the last couple of months.

“Nights like this we have to earn them, we have to earn what we’re doing in the league but it’s always nice to beat teams from a higher league, test yourselves against Championship-level teams and to come out on top is even better.

“We’ve got to take confidence out of it first and foremost, we’ve got to take the understanding of work rate and defending well.

“I thought Matt Smith did excellent, and Alex has made fantastic saves, he’s done that before for us. People will say that’s his job if we’re being really harsh but he’s been fantastic for us from a professional point of view, and when he’s called upon he’s made some outstanding saves that you’re not sure how he’s saved them.

“[Ash] I think he’s a player that we’ve signed with potential, he’s not played a huge amount of games in his career and tonight’s probably the hardest night he’s had so far in his career. We spoke to him at half time, that he had to be tactically better in the second half ,then we suffered with a few injuries and we have to move him around, put him to right back which he did professionally, and then I think the first penalty happens, the ‘keeper coming off his line, but it takes a bit of character to pick up that ball again, get your mind focused, Alex Cairns was screaming at him to stay focused, and I think that’s what you need at that moment, a really senior professional guiding you through it so I think he got his thoughts back together, got his composure back, and fair play to him he stepped up and kept a calm head for his second penalty.”

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke said: “First of all we are disappointed, because we wanted to go into the next round.

“I feel for the lads, when you judge the game, normally you need to win this game.

“It was an incredible amount of chances that we have created, it’s so difficult to create big chances against a side who is sitting that deep and defends for their lives and for them, it is the game of the season.

“We created so much, it felt like we had enough chances to score five by half time, but the reality is we just scored one in 90 minutes.

“The opponent was one time in our half and they also scored one and we had to accept the draw after 99 minutes with added time and the loss in the penalty shootout.

“It’s disappointing for the lads, but performance wise I can’t really accuse them.”

As mentioned, Gary Neville was rinsed by viewers over his goalgasm commentary as Salford knock out Leeds…

@RM_Mili_History: Is having Gary on co comms not a conflict of interest a bit 😅

@dylannMUFC: I like Gary Neville but how the fuck have they allowed him to commentate on a team he owns 😂

@Jamie_Allatt: @SkySports Can you stop rimming Gary Neville now please?

@ArranAFCSTL: Get Gary Neville off the commentary . Can’t believe sky are letting the Salford owner commentate on their game and cheerlead for them . Chap never commentates on League Cup games

@jjoshperrin: Gary Neville commentating on Man United games is bad, but to have him commentating on a team he literally owns is a quite ridiculous decision by sky #CarabaoCup

@paulkavanagh89: Gary Neville commentating on the club he owns says all you need to know about modern sky .. absolute dog shit there days are numbered

@B_Fryer_97: Walked into the pub to hear Gary Neville spunking himself to death on commentary celebrating the team he owns scoring… how the fuck do you allow this shit? @SkyFootball

@WFCJamie2: gary neville keep it in your pants you absolute salford freak

@Radebe_Leeds: Make sure to tune into Round 3 on Sky Sports, when Salford will be on TV and Gary Neville will be on commentary, cheering when Salford score and saying nothing when the other team does 🤣🤣🤣

@wayneleedsfan: Sky have been fucking pathetic this entire shootout. Showing Neville’s reaction “do you fancy him to score” and panning to those other scum bastards that own the club throughout. Ram it.
