Gary Mills appointed as new manager of Southern League club

Experienced former footballer Gary Mills has been appointed as the new manager of a Southern League club, and it’s gone down a hit with fans.

That team is Corby Town who say that they are delighted to announce that he will be the clubs new First Team Manager.

The Steelmen were looking set for the next Southern League Division One Central campaign under the leadership of Tommy Wright who returned to the club earlier this summer.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, he resigned due to work and family commitments, before the new campaign had even begun.

Gary will be assisted at the club by his long time assistant manager, Darren Gee.

Mills will be mostly remembered in management for his two spells in charge of York City, taking the side into the football league and also winning the FA Trophy in each spell.

Mills first role in management came with Grantham Town, guiding them Southern League Midland Division title before moving on to Tamworth. Then came the chance to become the first team coach at Coventry City and then manager of Notts County before a second spell in charge of Tamworth. It was during this spell that Mills guided The Lambs to the Blue Square North title.

A spell in charge of Wrexham was sandwiched by two successful spells at York.

It is not just as a manager Gary found success, he was a part of the 1980 Nottingham Forest side that won the European Cup, beating Hamburg 1-0 at Real Madrid’s famous Bernabeu Stadium.

Mills also enjoyed success with their Nottingham Rivals, being part of the Notts County side that won the Anglo-Italian Cup at Wembley Stadium in 1995.

The midfielder represented England at Under 21 level and also featured for Derby County, Leicester City and then ventured to the USA to play with Seattle Sounders.

Gary played under some fantastic managers, taking traits from the likes of Brian Clough, David Pleat, Neil Warnock and many others into his style of management.

Darren was Gary Mills’ assistant manager at Grantham Town, King’s Lynn and Tamworth. He took over as Tamworth manager in 2002, and in a two-year spell won the Southern League Premier Division title, reached an FA Trophy final and kept the club in the Football Conference.

He worked with Mills again at Notts County and Alfreton Town, and after initially taking over as manager at Alfreton, followed Mills to Tamworth in 2007.

Having won the Conference North title in 2009, the pair moved on to York City in 2010, winning the Conference Premier play-offs and FA Trophy in 2011–12.

Everybody at Corby Town would like to welcome Gary and Darren to Steel Park.
