Furious Preston boss Ryan Lowe wants referee explanation over Leeds’ stoppage time penalty

Furious Preston boss Ryan Lowe wants an explanation from referee David Webb over Leeds’ stoppage time penalty on Sunday afternoon.

Lowe said he was left aggrieved by the officials’ decision to give Leeds a spot kick on 93 minutes, but made sure he tried to be careful in what he said.

Ryan Ledson was deemed to have deliberately handled in the penalty area after the ball had been headed down by Joe Rodon towards striker Patrick Bamford, with the ref pointing to the spot.

Substitute Joel Piroe netted with ease, giving Leeds a 10th win in their last 11 games at home, keeping pressure on the likes of the Championship top three, Ipswich, Southampton and potentially Leicester if they drop in form.

Ryna Lowe said: “I’ll be careful what I say. Proud of the boys, first and foremost, for coming and competing with a top team and some top players, top manager and top club, if that makes any sense, because the fans really rallied them on. But our lads are unlucky not to come away with definitely a point, but I can’t dwell on it too much. I’ve just said to the boys, we have to use it as a motivation, but we’re being undone by a decision that’s I don’t know, is it a pen? Is it not a pen? I know my feelings on it and I know if there was VAR and it was in the premiere, it doesn’t get given, so be careful how I’ll say it, but, yeah, we should be coming away with a point.”

Interviewer: “Have you seen it back? Ryan Ledson’s arm is out away from his body.”

Lowe: “His arm’s like this. It rolls up his body and then it’s his arm. If it hits your body first, it’s not really stopping a goal scoring opportunity. It goes right to their player. But even before that, there’s a foul. And I know we were complaining, me and their manager, Daniel, over some fouls and some yellow cards. It was so inconsistent, but, as I say, disappointed to come away without any points, but really pleased and proud of the boys for what performance they put in.

Interviewer: “What do you take out of it if no points?”

Lowe: “Well, we’ve got to take numerous positives out of it because we’ve had from the PGMOL, we’ve had numerous decisions that have gone against us early on in the season and we’re being told it should have been either pens or red cards. So it’s not going to help us. We are where we are. We probably should be on another six, seven, eight points, maybe, but we haven’t had them decisions, so we just have to use our, gain our own look, but I just wanted to be fair all the way around, right through the middle for both teams, and I don’t think it was today.”

Interviewer: “Even more galling for you because you’ve had to overcome this sickness bug. How much of an issue has that been for you?”

Lowe: “No, the sickness book is the sickness book. It is what it is. The lads were fantastic. I’ve just said that we’ve got to use as a motivation. A lot of people won’t have expected us to come here and get a result. I did. I’ve got belief in me players and me staff and the players have. But listen, as I’ve said, I can’t be more proud than after today because we’re being done by a decision, which I’m going to go and see the referee afterwards. And he’s a nice guy, Webby, and he’s normally a decent ref, so I’ll have a chat with him over it because in my eyes, it’s definitely not a pen.”

Interviewer: “Spirit of the performance today. Can that help you to try and rediscover the kind of form you had at the start of the season and push towards the playoffs?”

Lowe: “Well, I disagree with saying rediscover form. I think we’ve got form like you’ve seen today. We’ve come to Elland Road. Without their goal, we’re probably above what the xGs, without their penalty. So to come here and go toe to toe with them, yet we did defend large parts and we had to because we know that last week’s performance, second half was very good. We’ve had good performances. We just haven’t had good decisions and good results. So, look, as I said to the boys, we’ll rest tomorrow and we’ll go again now and attack the week for another important game away.”

Leeds’ Daniel Farke meanwhile says: “These are the best wins of the season. We’ve had many electrifying home performances with many goals, whose side are unbeaten in 14 league games at Elland Road.

“These are the best moments, the season-defining moments for the mood and the confidence and the belief in the dressing room.

“I love creating chance after chance and champagne football and scoring goal after goal, but these types of games and these types of wins are still the most enjoyable.”

There was a huge reaction as the furious Preston boss Ryan Lowe wants a referee explanation over Leeds’ stoppage time penalty…

@Bern_lufc: A player has his arm outstretched in the box (unnatural position) the ball is bouncing in that area. Stonewall pen. If VAR was there the Preston keeper would have been sent off earlier in the game but there we go….

@myoungy: Strongly disagree. No way on earth VAR overturn that, his arm was in an unnatural position, maybe harsh but its a clear penalty

@Joe_tiff25: Just waffle, to be honest, every day of the week it’s a pen. The refereeing in this game was shambolic, and Preston were lucky to still have 11 men on the pitch at the end.

@JamieMcEvoy: “The ball rolls up his body” he says with no substance behind it. A throw away, inaccurate statement. It tells me so much about this man and why he is an average coach. He talks for the sake of it. Emotionally fragile. That’s why his players won’t listen to him half of the time

@SebMellis: Got this one wrong here, a clear penalty. The referee did go against us in certain instances but we didn’t create enough chances up top to say the ref was what made the difference. #pnefc

@no1brede: Lowe is chatting absolute balls post match. 100% given by VAR these days. And VAR would have had his keeper sent off. He sent his team out to play dirty and waste time. Got exactly what they deserved in the end, and lucky to finish the game with 11 on the pitch.

@BarneyLUFC21: Watching it from the KOP it was very soft and absolutely if VAR was involved it would have taken 3 minutes to say that’s a penalty. Off you pop Ryan Lowe with your tactics of time wasting and shisthousing a game

@liamleeds88: In the Prem your keeper is sent off and the pen is still given you fucking muppet #lufc #pnefc

@ConnorMOT92: It’s handball, simple as. It would probably be given with VAR as well. Jesus Christ 🫣 #LUFC

@ajm1991_: Someone’s going to look an absolute dickhead when they watch it back. Also what about his goalie handballing outside the box? Do we forget that? 😂

@li4mlufc: But does the ball ‘roll up his body’ or does it hit the underside of his arm as it’s outstretched from his side? 1st goal wasn’t spectacular, it came to one of their players after pinballing around the box, after that opener it could’ve been 6-1 without the pen if we could finish

@mipsical: Ref had a shocker today. Thought he gave a lot of decisions Preston way. But definitely a penalty. Should have arms behind his back or down by side when in box

@DirtyLeedsFC: When you send your players out with the main tactic of wasting time, forgive me I dont take anything you say seriously… How do you get a job in football?! At some point the interviewers will be brave enough to address it.

@ossett_white: Proud of the boys for coming to Elland Road & competing 😂😂 they’re professional footballers it’s their job to compete at a bare minimum …you would want them to try & win not play for a draw!! You left with what you deserved …nothing!!!

@ALSP8: It was a penalty clear as day

@smith_ingham: With VAR that is 100% given, & he will realise this when he watches it properly. He is just bitter that his kick em up in the air tactics failed to grind out a result. They may have got something if they had tried to play football in the 2nd half rather than kicking everyone

@Superleeds1Mot: Preston got what they deserved absolutely nothing 💛💙

@fulljonnynelson: Surely at this stage, someone would have shown him the replay again. 😑

@TheGriffardinho: 100% pen. And if there was VAR your goalie would have been sent off for a handball 🤷

@jkhorsley: Such a poor take from Lowe. Clear penalty. His side got a lot of favourable decisions. If the game has VAR his keeper would have been sent off too. Bit of an embarrassing interview.

@Lucy_LUFC: Literally stuck his arm out like he was indicating on a bike sunshine. And then the ball hit it. Case closed.

@CasualsNorthern: Just stop embarrassing us 🙈

@Molloyowls: I hate Leeds but it was a penalty, clear as day. The way he pulled his arm away as well like the ref wouldn’t see it 😂

@TheFootyRef_: These comments are baffling. The ball bounces up, Ledsons arm is in a natural position however he then decides to flick it out and make contact with the ball. I’m not sure on what planet RL believes this is an error on the part of the officials
