Frustrated Crewe fans boo Lee Bell and his side after lowly Newport managed to score a 93rd minute equaliser on Wednesday night.
The hosts had gone in front early through Emre Tezgel’s 12th-minute dinked finish to make it his 11th goal of the season, but Cameron Antwi’s deflected effort levelled it just after the break.
Courtney Baker-Richardson received a second yellow mid-way through the second half to swing the momentum back to Crewe, who regained the lead via Josh March’s rebound.
But deep into stoppage time, Antwi struck one from distance to earn Newport a vital point. They sit bottom of League Two, but not four points from safety.
Crewe move up into 12th but miss the chance to climb into the play-off places.
Crewe boss Lee Bell said, with his side now on a winless league run of four matches: “It was very disappointing as it was a game we were expected to win. We started really well and we should have gone in 2-0 ahead, but we gave them something to cling to.
“I didn’t think Newport were a threat but we lacked composure controlling the game against 10 men. I felt we were rushed, we panicked and we have got to eradicate the type of goals we are conceding.
“We are struggling for numbers and have a young team, but we have got to be tougher to play against. We have to do better if our ambition is to get promoted. We should be in a better position than where we are.”
“It was a really disappointing evening.”

3/11/25: Know the job on hand to achieve our goal set at the start of the season
10/11/25:’expectations’ need to be lowered after (another) below par performance
4 wins in 15 & against bottom of the league with 10 men is too much for our goals for promotion clearly #CreweAlex pic.twitter.com/hi4UKRpEFE

“There’s no time to dwell. We’ve got another game on Saturday, and hopefully we can respond.”

Newport boss Christian Fuchs, who made eight changes to his side, said, per The Gazette: “The resilience and character shown by the players was more important than anything else.
“The players were honest about their performance against Boreham Wood. But talking is easy and they followed it up with action and didn’t give up until the very last second.
“After the meeting we’d had, I knew everyone would give everything and we are confident of turning around the season. The intensity the players showed helps them to believe particularly when they went down by one man and down by a goal.
“Courtney’s first yellow card was unfortunate but the second one you can see why it was given.
“But the players reacted to what we’d spoken about and created a lot of chances and I’m very happy for Cameron. Now we need to show the same bravery and we work towards getting a home win.”
Twitter users reacted as frustrated Crewe fans boo Lee Bell and his side after Newport score a 93rd minute equaliser…
@clh19961996: Come on Lee, you really can’t come out and say expectations are too high when you’ve just drawn at home against bottom of the league with 10 men.
@LukeBebbo1996: The expectations talk again. How can you a week ago be bullish and say we are putting down a marker to the players we know what we want now let’s do it. Fast forward a week and woah guys who said anything about promotion stop with the pressure. Great guy but come on
@do_dabber: Go on Lee, bring Finney on to shore things up a bit at the back 🤪🤪🤪
@nyeomans4: How in the same sentence can you say expectations are too night and then say we want to get promoted?
@Lewis_Crump: Exceptions too high? Your having a laugh right. You and the chairman bang on about wanting to be fighting for promotion!
@BillyMason75: Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see the Alex get promoted under Lee Bell. Unfortunately that is never going to happen. Another season of mediocrity and we’ll be on rinse and repeat until we make a change. I love the bloke but sadly he’s not capable.
@joecos4457:
“Really disappointed”
“A game we should have won”
“Poor decision making”
“Lack composure”
“Didn’t control the game”
“Rushed and panicked”
“We should be in a better position”
“I sound like a broken record”
I like him but the last comment nails it. Time to go #CreweAlex #BellOut
@superCrewe11: Bell out and finney out
@Rb84377821: What a terrible interview by a mumbling excuse merchant of a manager. So Come on board you know what to do so bloody do it FFS
@AlfieHi14845583: Beating bottom of the league with 10 men is high expectations apparently 🤣 #CreweAlex
@ZestyGresty: Should easily be challenging for promotion with this set of players. Get him gone. Coward tactics yet again against 10 men bottom of the league at HOME!!!! Should be sacked just for playing Finney, fans deserve better
@InTheShires: Key phrase in there was broken record. How many times do you talk about poor goals to concede and yet it happens over and over again. We know it’s a journey but we would like to actually get there at some point…
@JHWnorth: Expectations too high, get a life Lee with your patronising shite week in week out! About time the board made a decision!
@1985Pete: Having the Balls to stand in front of Graham and saying “people expecting to much of this team” after listening to Graham’s interview on @RailwaymenThe last week. Priceless 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@StandingAlone77: Expectations are too high? Sorry, here’s me thinking 4 wins from the last 15 was unacceptable. How silly of me. #CreweAlex
@FearnRussell:
‘Expectations are too high’
You what pal
@65Dangermouse: No our expectations are realistic. Lee has the most talented squad in recent years in a very average league. He and his team have have continued to mismanage the squad. Every season with Lee in charge we have gone backwards and will continue to do so if he stays as manager.
@InTheShires: Ultimately we have failed, at home, to beat a shockingly poor team who are rock bottom of the league and down to 10 men for over 30 minutes. This is INEXCUSABLE. Finney should be no where near the first team – this is on Bell. Thought we were totally focussed on promotion. Joke.
@AlfieHi14845583: Producing that against a team bottom of the league with 10 men as well as subbing Finney on should be a sackable offence
@TylerBirtles: That’s absolutely shameful. Two points completely thrown down the bin. Absolute bottlers.
@EProudlove24: Time to go (6 months ago) #CreweAlex
@AlexBarron1988: Literally shut up shop after going 2-1 up, against the worst side in the league. And they had 10 men. Shambles #CreweAlex
@Alexandra6077: Embarrassingly awful excuse of a performance, far too many going through the motions thinking the match was won. Defence was abysmal and it would help if we had a half decent keeper who prevented those sort of shots going in
It’s been an alright spell Bell, but its time: pic.twitter.com/FwYrRCqmVJ
