Frank Lampard receives a number of cheeky taunting chants from the home fans as Coventry City lose 4-1 at Portsmouth.
Callum Lang had an afternoon to remember when he scored all four of Portsmouth’s goals to move themselves out of the Championship relegation places inside a bumper Fratton Park atmosphere with the Pompey faithful singing ‘Lampard, what’s the score?!’.
A tap-in from Norman Bassette had put the Sky Blues ahead on the 3rd minute, but that sparked Pompey into life and Lang turned the scoreline around to have the hosts going into the break 2-1 up.
Lang got his hat-trick just minutes into the second half with a header, and then made it four after Coventry keeper Bradley Collins clawed the ball back off the line and into Lang’s path.
Pompey climb up to 20th in the table and within four points and four places of Coventry, who sit 17th.
This was not only Lang’s first hat-trick in senior football, but he also becomes the first man since Yakubu in May, 2004, to score four goals in a game.
Yakubu last done so on the final day of the 2003/04 season in a 5-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

Coventry’s Frank Lampard spoke post-match, per the club website:
Thoughts on the game and the performanceā¦
āTough one for everyone, because defending is a team effort.
āFirst half our general play was ok. Itās always a difficult game here and credit to them and to their performance, but I thought first half it was even. Two mistakes gives them two goals.
āSecond half we werenāt good enough and itās easy to see and itās the first time Iāve had that since Iāve been here because generally, weāve been pretty good.
āVery good last week and even at West Brom, but second half today was a real clear show of what football is about, especially in the Championship.
āIf you find a hard moment and you donāt compete then the result will look after itself and it did, so big learnings to take away on that front.ā
Individual errors in the gameā¦
āI think they speak for themselves and Iām not going to harp on about individual errors because they happen, but they were clear, and they will lose you games.ā
Heads dropping in the second halfā¦
āItās fair to say but itās not important because they now have to realise that canāt be the way, your confidence canāt drop.
āYou can lose a game of football, but you canāt lose the confidence and desire to do something about it as a group and individually.
āConfidence only builds through hard work and resilience; thatās the only way I know.ā
Learning from todayās performance and the jobā¦
āI was very aware of the job. If there is any positive to take from this and the defeat, itās that it just gives you a clear picture.
āWe are where we are for various reasons, and we have to put them right.
āYou can talk about confidence and mentality or whether you talk about football, today for me wasnāt a football answer.
āThey were too aggressive for us in the second half and we werenāt aggressive enough with them and if you get that bit wrong in the Championship then youāll lose games like this.ā
Not matching Portsmouth in the second halfā¦
āYou know what youāre getting when you come here, theyāve given teams tough games this season and you have to respect every team in the Championship.
āIf theyāre going to press and be aggressive then you need to match that and be aggressive and in the second half, we didnāt do that.ā
Pompey boss John Mousinho said after the game, per the club website: āItās a fantastic result and a performance to match ā especially in the second half.
āI was really pleased with how we responded to the adversity of falling behind in the opening few minutes and then almost going two down.
āWe settled into the game and then it was a really frantic first half ā I think both head coaches would have been displeased with how open it was.
āThere were chances at both ends of the pitch and we were perhaps a bit fortunate to go in leading 2-1.
āBut it was a different story after the break and I thought we were worth the win ā and probably a couple more goals as well. It was comprehensive performance.
āCallum has scored some big goals for us ever since he arrived at the football club and heās been our outstanding player this season.
āThereās the energy he puts in and the fact heās such a physical presence, but heās also adding real quality to that.ā
Frank Lampard receives cheeky taunting chants from fans as Coventry lose 4-1 at Portsmouth
Twitter users reacted after Frank Lampard receives cheeky taunting chants from fans as Coventry lose 4-1 at Portsmouth…
@Jameseb1987: Please chuck Da Silva and Collins into the U23s until they can be offered out in Jan. Never let them back in a Coventry shirt.
@will_machin32: anyone blaming lampard doesnāt know much. maybe he isnāt the one but the only thing that is clear is; maybe it wasnāt robins: maybe itās the players who were always the problem
@JakeRuss1000: Klopp could come in and spend 150 million this January and we would still be in the same place. It runs deeper than that, and needs a real overhaul. Something is going wrong and I’m not sure what it is…
@thejodiefry: Thatās the worst away game Iāve been to since Cambridge away. Absolutely disgraceful and embarrassing. Iām absolutely fuming š”
@michaellfriel: Atleast itās the last time we have to see Collins binks Thomas da silva play for the club again
@Adi_iliff: Probably the worst display of the seasonā¦ and that says something as weāve been wank for 95% of it! Frank needs to give these lot a rocket, and get some of them out of the side permanently
@Benr83: Could have been cruising after 15 minutes, somehow managed to turn it into probably the worse performance of the season. The errors from Collins (again) and DaSilva (again) at unforgivable but I don’t think replacing them two will solve all out issues. Defence looked shaky all game
@SephtonMark: Pathetic! We looked scared to death second half, no character or leadership, folded to pieces. Portsmouth have worst home record in the championship. I seriously never want to see Collins in a Cov shirt again. We need new LB, CB, RB and Keeper. Our Defence is š© #PUSB
@Llewcalon: I defended Collins before the game. Can’t now. He’s been given a fair crack at the whip, and he’s failed. Send him out on loan to L1 next season and give Dovin a go now. DK has got to realise this is not a top 6 squad. It’s clear there just isn’t enough quality for that.
@castledine52: No more arm around the shoulders..need a proper bollocking with a few tea cups thrown in for good measure š”š” was really looking forward o boxing day,not so sure now..need a šŗ or six #pusb
@SamCov94: Massive clear out is needed. January transfer window canāt come quick enough.
@BlincoSimon: Worse keeper in the league costs us every week, any game he plays from now I aināt watching
@ErosStuart: Awful. Looked timid and without any physicality. Walked over by a team that played like a team.
@ItsLewii: Truly spineless and gutless. Worst away performance for a long time and that’s saying something. Dress it up how you want, not good enough.
I sacked a manager who was cult hero after 7 and 1/2 years because I didnāt wanna be on 26 points at Christmas as the players will be under triple pressure and thinking about summer holidays! Then we have a problem as a fire sale will be needed? pic.twitter.com/9dUIRBEDO1
