Footage shows what James Maddison did to put off Mo Salah before penalty miss

Footage emerges shows what James Maddison did to put off Mo Salah before the penalty miss in Leicester’s win against Liverpool.

The 25 year old attacking midfielder has been praised after helping to distract the Egyptian footballer moments before missing a penalty.

Salah was awarded a first-half spot kick at the King Power Stadium when Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi brought down Salah in the area.

The Reds forward was expected to score, especially with a stunning record from 12 yards behind him, missing just two of 20 for Liverpool.

However he saw Kasper Schmeichel deny him another goal, before his rebounded header clipped the bar and was cleared away.

When looking back at the replay, Maddison played a role in the miss, put off Salah by speaking into his ear as he waited for the ref’s whistle.

Maddison then took up residence directly behind Salah, standing in the middle of the D as he began his run up from a central position.

“Tonight, we weren’t at our best, and that is why we lost,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo after the Premier League encounter.

“We had quite a few chances to score tonight, but it wouldn’t have made the game better, actually.

“I could sit here now, and it was 2-1 to us, which is obviously plausible, but I wouldn’t have liked the game anyway.

“I can say things like winning the dirty games, and they are all true, but tonight I didn’t like a lot in our game, to be honest.

“That’s not cool. We have to do better.

“So we have a few days now to think it through, talk it through, improve and go again.”

On the penalty miss, Klopp addressed Maddison’s role, adding: “There’s not a little bit of blame for (Salah) or whatever.

“Yes, James Maddison for sure was talking to him [to put him off], but everybody tries that.

“Mo usually scores from these situations, and tonight he didn’t.

“It was a little like the whole game, Mo is part of the team, and usually he is better in this situation like the team was better in the football game.”

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers: “The players put in a heroic effort when you think of the recovery time against a team with so much power and athleticism. You don’t keep a clean sheet against Liverpool if everyone isn’t working. But it was the context of it after playing against Manchester City.

“We played a diamond for an hour to keep the threat in the side and then switched to 4-3-3 and showed resilience. [Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s] energy is remarkable and we needed that in the team. Him and Hamza [Choudhury] had to put in so much work.

“I just thought, you know, let’s go back to basics [with our set-piece defending]. An old school structure. Let’s defend properly. We did that tonight. The centre-halves were amazing but they all played their part. Collectively, we did really well.”
