Footage goes viral of York and Scunthorpe players in scrap after cheeky wind up antics

Footage goes viral of York and Scunthorpe players in scrap after cheeky wind up antics during the Tuesday night National League fixture.

Josh Stones netted a brace to see the Minstermen climbed to the top of the table with a 3-0 victory at their fellow promotion hopefuls. Joe Grey also got on the scoresheet to made it 2-0 just before the 30 minute mark. Jeff King also saw an effort come back off the bar early in the second half.

The result sees York jump above Rochdale, who could only pick up a 2-2 draw away at Halifax. See more on that HERE.

Here’s how fans reacted as footage goes viral of York and Scunthorpe players in a scrap after some cheeky wind up antics…

@HLTCO: The English football pyramid is a thing of beauty. Look at it. đŸ„°

@GCZMRL: Great goal and leagues above the rest. Definitely League 1 material.

@billy4223: No plastic tourists , no mobile phones , just old skool football . Love it
don’t even know who it is !!!!

Stones said on his second goal, as per York Press: “It bounced and sometimes you get lucky deflections.

“I knew I was through and I saw the ‘keeper come out, but I thought he’d backed off.

“I saw a green sock out of the corner of my eye and I knew it was him, so I thought to just take a touch to the right and I’ve seen a gap at the front post.

“When it went in, I turned around and my mum and dad were there with big smiles on their face.

“That’s what it’s all about, they’ve dragged me up and down the country for years and I wouldn’t be here without them.

“That’s probably my favourite goal that I have ever scored just for that reason.

“They come everywhere and watch and they have been since I was 5 years old, so it was special to share that with them.

“To share it with a sold out away end, their support has been unreal all season and all we can ask if that the fans keep it up.

“We know they will, and we’ll reward them with success.

“You see the position we are in the league, the fans deserve the performance that we put in tonight because of the numbers that they come in.

“All we can ask if that they keep supporting us like we have been, and we’ll reward them.”

On his overall performance: “All-rounded in the game probably, over the two halves I’d say yeah, it was probably my best performance,” Stones confessed.

“It’s nice to top it off with three points and to go top of the league, but the work’s not done.

“I think there’s 12 games left, so it’s on us now to keep our standards up.

“We’ve been excellent for 23 games now so we’ll keep the run going and keep the momentum going.

“The first one [chance], looking back I probably could have used my left foot and given myself more of the net to aim for.

“After that one, I said to myself that if I get another, just slot it.

“Then I got another and to be fair to the ‘keeper, he’s pulled off a brilliant save.

“The last one, I was a bit fuming with myself, I just thought to put my foot through it and it went into the bottom corner.

“As a team, it was a real team performance to come somewhere like this and shut the crowd up from minute one, a real professional performance.”

On his relationship with Maynard: “He said to me at the end that he was proud of me.

“He’s happy with the patience I had when he first came in, I said to him before to give me a chance and I’ll reward you.

“I feel like I’m doing that, but to be honest, it’s not any one individual.

“There’s 11 players on the pitch plus your bench, plus your squad, the people who miss out and then come back onto the bench.

“Everyone’s putting their 50p in, and it’s one of the best squads I’ve ever been a part of.

“It doesn’t matter whose on the pitch and whose on the bench, whose missing out, you believe in every single one of us.

“We’ve got a real special thing going on.”

Stones said on fellow players keeping an eye on the Rochdale score: “A few of the lads behind the bench said it went 2-0, then 2-1 and 2-2, but for us, I know it’s between us and them at this minute in time battling it out for the title, but for us we just concentrate on us.

“We have done for the last 23 games and we’re unbeaten, unbeaten for a reason.

“We believe in each other and we’ve got an unbelievable group, probably the best that I’ve ever been a part of and it’s an honour to play with them every week.

“For us, we concentrate on ourselves, keep doing what we’re doing and the results will keep coming.”

York boss Stuart Maynard, per York Press: “We’ve just got to focus on the next game,” Maynard urged.

“This is where we’ve got to be solely focused on it, if we take our eye off of it, then this is what can happen.

“You can not quite get the performances that you need if you think too far ahead, so for us, and a group, it was unbelievable tonight, we’re top of the league and we deserve it.

“The next game is the most important now, it’s the biggest game of the season and we’ve got to be ready to go.

This was a big game because when you look over my shoulder and look at the pitch, it was a very difficult pitch.

“We knew it would be that, but the lads took on the game plan and executed it better than we ever expected.

“They deserved it, in the first-half we could have gone 4-0 up, we miss two one-on-ones.

“Stonesy, all night [worked] tirelessly, he’s just gone to another level.

“I think the team has, game by game, strength by strength, I wasn’t happy on Saturday and we won 4-1.

“The lads knew it, we weren’t happy with the second-half performance, in the first-half we were good enough at 3-0, but in the second-half we weren’t good enough to the standards we set ourselves.

“We said that to the group tonight, we’ve got to get back to where we’re at, keep getting better and we can’t have any lulls, we can’t afford to.

“The standards have got to keep being driven, and it’s got to be driven from within. It’s not just us as a management team, they have to keep driving it.

“Tonight, we showed what we are about.

“We said to the group to make sure that they [Scunthorpe] have no good feeling here whatsoever.

“We work tirelessly on the detail, sucking them out, flipping it to Stonesy or down the side to Joe Grey.

“They have a high line, they’ve played with a high line all season and we couldn’t quite execute it in the home game.

“We probably didn’t have enough time to work on it, but this game we knew that when it was coming around, the tactics and the team selection was spot on for the personnel on the pitch.

“They’ve executed the game plan perfectly and if we had come in three or four up, no one could have argued.”
