Footage goes viral of York and Scunthorpe players in scrap after cheeky wind up antics during the Tuesday night National League fixture.
Josh Stones netted a brace to see the Minstermen climbed to the top of the table with a 3-0 victory at their fellow promotion hopefuls. Joe Grey also got on the scoresheet to made it 2-0 just before the 30 minute mark. Jeff King also saw an effort come back off the bar early in the second half.
The result sees York jump above Rochdale, who could only pick up a 2-2 draw away at Halifax. See more on that HERE.
Here’s how fans reacted as footage goes viral of York and Scunthorpe players in a scrap after some cheeky wind up antics…
@HLTCO: The English football pyramid is a thing of beauty. Look at it. đ„°
@cheapmansvest: The audio of the guy in the background losing his shit just gets funnier and funnier, he’s furious đ€Ł #ycfc đŽ đ”
@allmoshnopit: Fuck ya fuck Premier League and fuck yer Champions League. This is football
@GCZMRL: Great goal and leagues above the rest. Definitely League 1 material.
@billy4223: No plastic tourists , no mobile phones , just old skool football . Love it⊠donât even know who it is !!!!
Stones said on his second goal, as per York Press: âIt bounced and sometimes you get lucky deflections.
âI knew I was through and I saw the âkeeper come out, but I thought heâd backed off.
âI saw a green sock out of the corner of my eye and I knew it was him, so I thought to just take a touch to the right and Iâve seen a gap at the front post.
âWhen it went in, I turned around and my mum and dad were there with big smiles on their face.
âThatâs what itâs all about, theyâve dragged me up and down the country for years and I wouldnât be here without them.
âThatâs probably my favourite goal that I have ever scored just for that reason.
âThey come everywhere and watch and they have been since I was 5 years old, so it was special to share that with them.
âTo share it with a sold out away end, their support has been unreal all season and all we can ask if that the fans keep it up.
âWe know they will, and weâll reward them with success.
âYou see the position we are in the league, the fans deserve the performance that we put in tonight because of the numbers that they come in.
âAll we can ask if that they keep supporting us like we have been, and weâll reward them.â
On his overall performance: âAll-rounded in the game probably, over the two halves Iâd say yeah, it was probably my best performance,â Stones confessed.
âItâs nice to top it off with three points and to go top of the league, but the workâs not done.
âI think thereâs 12 games left, so itâs on us now to keep our standards up.
âWeâve been excellent for 23 games now so weâll keep the run going and keep the momentum going.
âThe first one [chance], looking back I probably could have used my left foot and given myself more of the net to aim for.
âAfter that one, I said to myself that if I get another, just slot it.
âThen I got another and to be fair to the âkeeper, heâs pulled off a brilliant save.
âThe last one, I was a bit fuming with myself, I just thought to put my foot through it and it went into the bottom corner.
âAs a team, it was a real team performance to come somewhere like this and shut the crowd up from minute one, a real professional performance.â
On his relationship with Maynard: âHe said to me at the end that he was proud of me.
âHeâs happy with the patience I had when he first came in, I said to him before to give me a chance and Iâll reward you.
âI feel like Iâm doing that, but to be honest, itâs not any one individual.
âThereâs 11 players on the pitch plus your bench, plus your squad, the people who miss out and then come back onto the bench.
âEveryoneâs putting their 50p in, and itâs one of the best squads Iâve ever been a part of.
âIt doesnât matter whose on the pitch and whose on the bench, whose missing out, you believe in every single one of us.
âWeâve got a real special thing going on.â
Stones said on fellow players keeping an eye on the Rochdale score: âA few of the lads behind the bench said it went 2-0, then 2-1 and 2-2, but for us, I know itâs between us and them at this minute in time battling it out for the title, but for us we just concentrate on us.
âWe have done for the last 23 games and weâre unbeaten, unbeaten for a reason.
âWe believe in each other and weâve got an unbelievable group, probably the best that Iâve ever been a part of and itâs an honour to play with them every week.
âFor us, we concentrate on ourselves, keep doing what weâre doing and the results will keep coming.â
York boss Stuart Maynard, per York Press: âWeâve just got to focus on the next game,â Maynard urged.
âThis is where weâve got to be solely focused on it, if we take our eye off of it, then this is what can happen.
âYou can not quite get the performances that you need if you think too far ahead, so for us, and a group, it was unbelievable tonight, weâre top of the league and we deserve it.
âThe next game is the most important now, itâs the biggest game of the season and weâve got to be ready to go.
This was a big game because when you look over my shoulder and look at the pitch, it was a very difficult pitch.
âWe knew it would be that, but the lads took on the game plan and executed it better than we ever expected.
âThey deserved it, in the first-half we could have gone 4-0 up, we miss two one-on-ones.
âStonesy, all night [worked] tirelessly, heâs just gone to another level.
âI think the team has, game by game, strength by strength, I wasnât happy on Saturday and we won 4-1.
âThe lads knew it, we werenât happy with the second-half performance, in the first-half we were good enough at 3-0, but in the second-half we werenât good enough to the standards we set ourselves.
âWe said that to the group tonight, weâve got to get back to where weâre at, keep getting better and we canât have any lulls, we canât afford to.
âThe standards have got to keep being driven, and itâs got to be driven from within. Itâs not just us as a management team, they have to keep driving it.
âTonight, we showed what we are about.
âWe said to the group to make sure that they [Scunthorpe] have no good feeling here whatsoever.
âWe work tirelessly on the detail, sucking them out, flipping it to Stonesy or down the side to Joe Grey.
âThey have a high line, theyâve played with a high line all season and we couldnât quite execute it in the home game.
âWe probably didnât have enough time to work on it, but this game we knew that when it was coming around, the tactics and the team selection was spot on for the personnel on the pitch.
âTheyâve executed the game plan perfectly and if we had come in three or four up, no one could have argued.â
