Fleetwood boost promotion hopes with surprise signing of League One title winner

Fleetwood Town boost any hopes they have of promotion as they surprise fans by signing League One title winner Danny Mayor.

The 32 year old midfielder joins on a two year contract after being released by Plymouth Argyle earlier this summer, having made 34 appearances, scoring once, last season to help them win promotion back to the Championship.

Also linking up with the Cod Army is Ryan Broom, 26, who spent last season at Cheltenham and turned down their offer of a new deal.

He netted twice for the Robins in 2022-23, helping them to a 16th-place finish in League One, and across his two spells with Cheltenham, Broom played 134 games has also had spells with Peterborough and Plymouth Argyle.

STATEMENT ON DANNY MAYOR

Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce the signing of experienced midfielder Danny Mayor on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old spent last season with League One winners Plymouth Argyle, playing a massive part in their promotion back to the Championship.

The experienced box-to-box midfielder has also spent time at Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday, and Bury FC, playing 492 times in all competition since making his professional debut at Deepdale back in 2008.

In terms of honours, Mayor won promotion with Bury back in 2014-15 where he finished third, and then with current Preston boss Ryan Lowe as manager back in 2018-19, which resulted in a return to League One for the club.

Mayor claimed a third promotion a year later with new side Argyle, helping them to a third-place finish in League Two, and most recently helped his former club with a promotion to the second tier of English football.

With individual honours, Danny was named the Football League Two Player of the Year in 2014-15 season, whilst also being in in the PFA Team of the Year. He got the same recognition in the 2018-19 season, as well as in the 2019-20 campaign.

Leyland-born Mayor will join up with latest signing Ryan Broom and the rest of the Fleetwood Town squad on Monday for their first day back of pre-season. He will be on the plane to Waterford next week.

Welcome to the Club, Danny!

STATEMENT ON RYAN BROOM:

Fleetwood Town are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Ryan Broom on a two-year contract.

The 26-year-old, who spent last season with fellow League One side Cheltenham Town, knows what to expect in our division as the majority of his playing time has been spent here at the likes of Bristol Rovers, Cheltenham Town, and Peterborough United.

The goalscoring midfielder certainly knows where the net is as heโ€™s managed to score 27 goals in his career to date and has made just short of 200 appearances before penning his new deal with Fleetwood.

During his first spell at Cheltenham โ€“ between 2018 and 2020 โ€“ he picked up a handful of awards after their play-off destined season in 2018/19.

Not only did he make 48 appearances in that campaign, but he also took home three awards winning the Player of the Year, Norwegian Robins’ Player of the Year, and Players’ Player of the Year.

Newport-born Broom will join up with captain Josh Vela, Scott Robertson, and more in the middle of the park for the upcoming season and will be at Poolfoot Farm for the first day of training back after the summer.

Welcome to the Cods, Ryan!
