Chris Wilder says some of his players have lost his trust after an own goal gives Fleetwood a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

The League Two outfit have booked a place in the last 16 of the competition, Rhys Norrington-Davies left with his head in his hands after scoring an own goal.

Matt Lawlor’s Fleetwood, now unbeaten in nine games in all competitions, also had a goal ruled out for offside, and also chances come back off the woodwork.

Tom Cannon thought he had scored for Sheffield United, only for the offside flag to go up.

While he didn’t give any names, he said, as per The Star: “It’s my team so I have to take that responsibility.

“It has given me so much clarity. In who I can trust, and who’s going to take us forward. And who’s got a lot to do to get themselves back on side and on track with me.

“Players just did what they wanted instead of sticking with the plan. That doesn’t go unnoticed. I see everything. Ultimately, I have to take that responsibility, which I’m big enough to do.

“But I can’t stand here and defend the players. Some players just didn’t do enough and that will stay with me for quite a long time.

They’re going to have to do a lot to drag that back. I think, like I said, the clarity that I get from it is who I can trust and who is here 24/7 for us.”

After the game, Wilder said, as per The Star: “Players wanted to do their own thing, after the first half.

“We were okay in the first half. We had some good opportunities. They did too, and we knew that would happen.

“We knew that we had to get out of the trap second half and go through the gears a little bit. We had more gears in us but we decided to take a backward step, and the goal absolutely sums us up.

“Three or four mistakes in there and an own goal. That gives them a huge lift, which is what I told them at half-time. ‘This is what can happen if we don’t start the second half on the front foot and if we go off plan.’

“Players wanted to go off plan, and we have to own it. It’s an incredibly disappointing night, regardless of the amount of changes that we made. That’s nonsense.

“That team out there has been good enough to beat Blackburn and should have been good enough to win tonight. We haven’t. We have to pay the ultimate consequence.

He added: “We have to own it.

“I have to own it. It’s my team and we didn’t deserve to go through.

“They will be playing a top side and that’s what I wanted for the players, for the football club and the supporters. We’ve let a lot of people down tonight and we have to accept that and own that.

“There’ll be a lot of players that have had opportunities tonight to stake a claim. As always, when you’ve got a squad of players, when they’re not playing, they’ll have an opinion. They’ll be the victim.

“I wanted a problem going into Thursday and Friday and who to pick on Saturday. I haven’t got a problem now. I know exactly what players that I need to pick and which players are not playing for a reason.

“The biggest thing for me, that’s done me, is the first 15 minutes of the second half. Players that just thought that the game had come to them, and a sense of entitlement and arrogance. Thinking: ‘We’ll be OK.’

“Football doesn’t work like that and it hasn’t worked like that. We went off plan and we got hurt. We’re not good enough to go off plan.”

Before the game, Wilder said, as per Yorkshire Post: “The schedule is ridiculous. I think a couple of managers have pointed it out.

“The transfer window is ridiculous. In August, having a game on a Tuesday when the window was still going on was ridiculous. And the fixture list is ridiculous.

“We all want to progress in the Cup. I suppose that’s the price that we have to pay.

“And if we manage to get through a really difficult tie on Wednesday night, we’ll have the same situation.”

Wilder added: “I want us to go and pull a big name out on Wednesday night.”Whether it’s home or away, the competition at this stage is loaded with Premier League teams and I want to reward our supporters with one of those ties at home and away.

“But as always, to get there, we’ve got to deal with Fleetwood and I don’t want an upset.”
