The latest international break is upon us and while many top flight fans might not be too happy about that, it does present an opportunity for the masses to tune into some good old-fashioned lower league football.
Across both League One and League Two, this weekend will play host to some crucial games at both the top and bottom of these respective divisions. Some could say that it’s too early to consider these encounters important but with the ‘games played’ already being in double digits for most, momentum is vital, especially with the busy winter period looming large.
Today, we have decided to put together a list of five matches that are on our radar in the days ahead – and with this handy bet calculator, you can even see how much a five-fold accumulator could earn you in the absence of the Premier League.
Wigan vs Wycombe (Saturday 11th October, 15:00)
When you look at these two clubs, it can be easy to look back to their respective glory days. For Wycombe, it was flying high in the Championship. For Wigan, it was all about their iconic FA Cup win and European run. They have had an uneven start thus far, but it feels like both have the potential to kick on and really push for something greater between now and May.
Peterborough vs Stevenage (Saturday 11th October, 15:00)
Stevenage are perhaps one of the surprise packages of the third tier so far this season as they are right in the automatic promotion mix. They will be facing off against a Peterborough side that, by all accounts, are falling way below the standards we are used to seeing from them. With that being said, it actually feels like quite an even affair despite what the table may suggest.
Exeter vs Reading (Saturday 11th October, 15:00)
Despite Exeter and Reading having pretty similar starts to the campaign, they just seem like two clubs that should not be lingering around the same level. Exeter have been hovering around mid-table for a good few years now, whereas Reading are a club with the kind of stature that should at least push them into the Championship. Unfortunately, their ownership situation continues to cast a shadow of doubt over the Madejski.
Crawley vs Walsall (Saturday 11th October, 15:00)
Following their disappointing collapse at the end of last season, Walsall come flying out of the gate as they continue to push for a place in League One. This week, they will face off with Crawley Town who, on the flip side, are leaking goals for fun and desperately need to assert themselves with some defensive stability in the weeks ahead.
Swindon vs Notts County (Saturday 11th October, 15:00)
Swindon are often involved in some kind of battle, whether it be relegation or promotion, and they already look like they are making a push to get out of League Two after a strong start. Notts County, meanwhile, have been inconsistent up to this point in proceedings, but are known for making a surge into the promotion picture when fans least expect it.
