MACCLESFIELD STATEMENT:
Macclesfield FC can confirm that Robbie Savage has accepted the role of First Team Manager at Enterprise National League side, Forest Green Rovers.
Whereas we cannot hide the fact that this is disappointing, Robbie leaves with our very best wishes and eternal gratitude for everything that he has done for our Football Club over the course of the last five years.
On and off the pitch, Robbie has led by example – with his passion, desire and work rate not only unparalleled, but infectious in its nature.
Robbie has inspired us all to make Macclesfield FC the best it can be, and his role in creating the vibrant and inclusive Club that we see before us can never be exaggerated.
Firstly, as Director of Football and then as Head Coach, Robbie’s meticulous and unwavering work ethic helped ensure that Macclesfield once again had a Football Club everyone could be proud of.
Masterminding a truly historic campaign last season, Robbie’s side broke almost every record going as The Silkmen tore up the history books almost at a canter.
And yet, all the trophies and accolades somewhat pale into insignificance when it comes to how Robbie engaged with all those who hold this Club so dear.
Robbie helped make people believe what is possible and how the “impossible” can be achieved by a ruthless and relentless mindset.
This is the overriding legacy that Robbie leaves us with, both collectively and individually.
As we embark on a new era, this cannot and will not be lost, as we set our sights on taking our wonderful Football Club forward once more.
Macclesfield FC can also confirm that John McMahon has left the Club.
In this together 👊

Macclesfield FC are delighted to confirm John Rooney as our new First Team Manager.
John will be supported by Nigel Keogh, Peter Band and Anthony Curran as we prepare for our debut season in the Enterprise National League North.
Following our record-breaking season last year, it was imperative that we acted quickly and decisively in naming our new Management Team, and this is one which fills us with excitement on so many levels.
In John Rooney, we have someone who is a vibrant advocate of our football philosophy and how this should be executed.
He commands respect at every level of the Club, and the relationships he has created here at the Leasing.com Stadium speak for themselves.
Tactically astute, John possesses all the attributes we need to sustain the phenomenal momentum we currently enjoy.
In addition to this, John’s passion to lead this Club was something that is hard to put into words.
John recognises just how much all of this means to our fans and is absolutely committed to bringing further success to this Football Club.
Therefore, there can be no doubt that John is fully invested in the Club’s journey on an emotional level, and we have every confidence that he will be able to continue our upward trajectory towards the EFL.
Further to this, we are thrilled that Nigel, Peter and Anthony have all agreed to stay at the Club as part of John’s Coaching Team.
All three are incredibly talented, knowledgeable and well-respected individuals, with their dedication to Macclesfield Football Club beyond question.
Fans reacted as we hear the first words from Robbie Savage after leaving Macclesfield and taking the Forest Green job…
@OwenBanks23: Bring back cleggy
@x7tgvbdrkg: Don’t get why he wouldn’t stay tbh theres a good chance they’d be in the same league as fgr in a year or two anyways.
@33_ashtonJ: i think the way he’s left is the worst he could have with him saying he was staying and wanted to carry on then leaving us so close to pre-season if he left earlier we could have had time to find a great replacement. disappointing from savage with him joining a smaller club
@DylanFGRbanks: Vince is the ring leader, Bowen is a clown 🎪 Circus time
@linnet1976: Shame that. Was looking forward to welcoming him to The Walks…… A Robbie Savage/Dale Vince partnership only going to end one way though…
@TBBodell: Fascinated to see how this one turns out: the third instalment in the high-profile former player stakes after Duncan Ferguson and Troy Deeney. Savage has at least managed…
@jackbehrens04: Ultimate betrayal to Rob Smethurst, taking 3 players aswell. Bellend
@PeterFi22102940: He did a decent job at Macc where he had a much bigger budget than every other club, let’s see how he gets on in a league where a good few teams around them will have similar spending powers
@Jakey_Boyz: Got to give him a chance and hope the new DoF gets it right and that their relationship shows towards the pitch, albeit this club is still an absolute circus.
@alexxx0207: If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry 🤷🏻♂️
@AndrewNewts: If ever a club an manager were made for each other…
A massive day for Macc. They are now in a better position than ever… this club will fly now https://t.co/O7lumEBRQf
