First finalist confirmed for this season’s Checkatrade Trophy Final

The first finalist for this season’s Checkatrade Trophy Final has been confirmed after Portsmouth came away from Gigg Lane with a 3-0 to seal a place at Wembley.

A not so good first half saw Pompey go into the break at 0-0 with their fans not exactly pleased with what they were witnessing, however they came out in the second half a different side.

Gareth Evans broke the deadlock in the 61st minute by stepping up to curl home an excellent free-kick and give them the lead.

Three minutes later, Oli Hawkins slammed the ball into the roof of the net to double Pompey’s lead before Ronan Curtis then struck to effectively wrap up the contest.

Portsmouth will have to wait a week until they find out who they will face in the Checkatrade Trophy Final with Bristol Rovers’ tie with Sunderland needing to be settled.

Kenny Jackett said to BBC Solent Sport after the game: “It’s a terrific achievement by the players, many rounds, many games we’ve come through, different types of tests from early days, Crawley, Arsenal and Spurs 21s and then anyway, got through some big rounds and coming to Bury is not an easy game, and I thought it was tough for us first half, they gave us problems.

“But in the second half we adjusted things, from the start we stepped onto them and you could feel the goals coming. An excellent goal from Gareth and two and three followed quickly and hopefully we can now build on this anyway and it can give us some confidence in the league as we’ve had five draws on the spin, thats a first win in a while and hopefully we can take it into Saturday.”

Following the result, football fans took to both club’s result tweets to give their thoughts – take a look at what they had to say on the next page.
