Favourites to become new Plymouth manager as Miron Muslic leaves for talks with another club

We take a look at the favourites to become new Plymouth manager as Miron Muslic leaves for talks with another club.

As per Fabrizio Romano, Schalke activated the clause to appoint Miron Muslic as new head coach. Hull City, Köln and Hannover were also keen on him, but he’s now due to join Schalke.

Florian Plettenberg adds: Schalke are offering a contract running at least until 2027. There is a verbal agreement in principle between Miron Muslic and the club.

Other teams have tried to intervene in the last few hours. Schalke want to finalise the deal now.

However, contracts have not yet been signed, and Schalke still need to clarify details with Plymouth Argyle regarding his release clause.

The Muslic-to-Schalke topic heated up over the course of the day because a move for Christian Titz fell through.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Argyle can confirm that we have reluctantly allowed Head Coach Miron Muslic to open talks with a 2. Bundesliga side after he expressed his desire to speak with the German team and not return to England.

Despite regular communication since the end of the season, and no mention of any issues, Miron has now made it clear that, after extended periods away from his family, this opportunity provides him the chance to be closer to them after four years on the road.

We are frustrated by this decision, having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff as we look to return to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity.

Not only that, the club have also moved quickly to bring in new signings and received repeated verbal promises from Miron that he was committed to Argyle and would do everything to help the club bounce back to the second tier.

Muslic joined the Greens in January 2025, on a three-and-a-half-year contract, after a period out of the game having departed Cercle Brugge. He will now leave Argyle just four months into that long-term commitment.

We wish him the best for his future career.

We will be making no further comment at this stage.

The added a few days later: “Miron Muslic has departed the club to join 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04.

“Muslic joined Argyle in January, overseeing 23 matches, including the memorable victory against Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup. Despite his best efforts, he could not stave off relegation with Argyle dropping to Sky Bet League One on the final day of the season.

“We wish Miron all the best for his future endeavours.”

Miron Muslic doesn’t hold back as he demands ‘answers’ over Plymouth’s future

Miron Muslic didn’t hold back as he demanded ‘answers’ over Plymouth’s future with relegation all but confirmed.

Muslic expressed concern about the lack of a new sporting director following Neil Dewsnip’s departure in January.

He fears other clubs will outpace Argyle in preparing for the next season.

Here’s how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Plymouth manager as Miron Muslic leaves for talks with another club…

@owenthfc__: Doesn’t sound too glamorous when you word it as a ‘2. Bundesliga side’ but when I found out it’s Schalke, can you blame him? Managing Plymouth in League One in comparison to managing Schalke, one is a hell of a lot more appealing than the other

@JGsLongThrow: Comments here make me laugh. Loyalty works both ways. It’s impossible to be mad at him when a better job becomes available

@MrsFoxtrotwhisk: It’s not surprising he wants to be nearer his family. The stresses of working 24/7 in trying to keep us up, without his family beside him, combined with his comments at the end of the season, it was all too much. We need stability as a club, we haven’t got it #pafc

@PAFCPHILLIPS: This happens when you put clauses in contracts I’m afraid, can’t blame him massive club schalke best of luck to him

@CD_PAFC: I think this will lead to any new head coach/manager coming in receiving scepticism from the Green Army about loyalty. No beautiful speeches or charismatic sweet talking will pull the wool over us again! #pafc

@petehinton8: What an embarrassing statement. Not going to turn down a club the size of Schalke cause he wants to take you lot to Burton instead is he

@Aaronpress1: Miron was engineering his exit at the end of the season when calling the board out. As a result, they backed him. For once, this isnt on the board, Miron was never coming back once he went home. Talks the talk but walks out when it gets tough #pafc.

@PAFCRyan: It’s all in the board once again. Agreeing to a piss poor compensation fee, not getting any staff in when we had a good chance of staying up and having him join in a position that them and only them left us in with the Rooney publicity stunt, sooner Hallet fucks off the better now

@MaccaSouth: Something I never ever say, but I actually feel for Hallet and Parkinson. Muslic made his demands and they honoured them, got his men and implemented his structures, seemingly learned from mistakes and boom, he’s gone. This isn’t on them, huge pressure on now though. #pafc

@Neilpafc: Music came to Argyle to do a job, and he failed the main objective with the stay up. Yes, he beat Liverpool in the cup and will go down in history, but that wasn’t the main objective. Think about that for a second. We move on and get someone that’s committed. Night Greens #pafc

@RobGWarren4: He’s not turning down Schalke to stay with you lot ffs 🤣

@MikeLee_1994:
Some of the replies to this 😂
Schalke are one of the biggest clubs in Germany. Absolutely massive.
You’re Plymouth Argyle.
Know
Your
Place

@ewan_mcbryde: A new level of madness unlocked in English football. A league one side crying cos their manager wants to speak with Schalke. 😂

@ElegantChasers: Apparently it’s Schalke. Massive massive club. Can’t blame him one bit. They are bigger than 50% of the PL sides.

@AlbzSFC: Why would he turn down the 3rd biggest club in Germany?

@lwestlake7: Same old argyle getting shafted again! We are just a business! Fans get treated bad! We have no plan or structure it’s just all talk! Why on earth would you have a release clause in his contract! It was obvious he wanted just 6 months to see if he would be super man! 😡

@CharlieBass18: Damning statement. Can understand the frustration but Schalke are a massive club and given personal circumstances would be tricky to turn down. Really rooted for Argyle under Muslic last year so it’s a shame

@TomSagee: What a risk that turned out to be Hallett, all we’ve done in the last 18 months is go backwards. Now we need a whole new backroom staff and HOR will probably follow suit again, more upheaval is just what we need just before pre season

@oxfordtoafrica: A perfect gig for Des Buckingham, made for him and took Oxford up from league one in style.

@VertStabs: The best thing in these replies is seeing that people still know that Schalke exists
