We take a look at the favourites to become new Middlesbrough manager after the club’s sacking of Michael Carrick.
Keith Downie first reported that Michael Carrick has left his position as Middlesbrough manager after the 43-year-old had a meeting with Boro bosses this morning — including owner Steve Gibson — where he has learned his fate.
Carrick has been at Middlesbrough since October 2022, but has failed to lead them to promotion in three seasons in charge.
He still has two years left on his contract, but Boro have decided to make a change.

– STATEMENT ENDS –
FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW MIDDLESBROUGH MANAGER:
BetVictor – 6th June – 12pm
Rob Edwards – 6/4
Steve Cooper – 5/2
Sean Dyche – 3/1
Jan Dahl Tomasson – 4/1
Danny Rohl – 5/1
Roger Schmidt – 8/1
Michael Carrick said to the media, after the last game of the season: “It’s an awful feeling – there’s no getting away from it.
“The disappointment among the group is huge. I think you could see that after the game.
“We’re all so deflated and hurt, and we all care so much about this football club. I couldn’t have asked any more from the players – I thought they played really well.
“Conceding the first goal just before half-time gave Coventry something to hold on to, though we came out in the second half and played well in so many ways. “
We had opportunities, hit the woodwork and their keeper was making saves, but then we’ve been caught on a breakaway at the end.
“This one game wasn’t the story of the season though, looking back on it as a whole, we’ve just come up a little bit short.
“We wanted a little bit more of course, but without doubt the lads will learn a lot from this experience.”

This is how fans reacted amid the favourites to become new Middlesbrough manager after sacking Michael Carrick…
@justcalledtosay: Correct decision. He had no credit left with the fan base. There was no genuine excuse for the extent of last seasons performance. I’d expect we’ve already sounded out his replacement given Woodgate & G.Carrick are also gone. Steve Cooper will be near the top of that list
@Strickland__Ben: Anyone but Cooper or Edwards
@KarlWorton: Cooper that consistently takes teams up? Yeah, would be a terrible appointment
@Erimus1876: Cooper would be good, Edwards no
@Smoggypedro: Not wrong with cooper?
@dk_wray: Horrendous decision. What more can you expect from a manager that has to build a new team every transfer window now that we just sell our best players 🤦🏻♂️
@danielburns789: Now go pay for Danny rohl lads 👍
@BenF232003: DANNY DANNY ROHL
@david_sedgewick: Quite gutted it hasnt worked out, that first season was unreal, injuries let us down at the end of that season, he lacked some parts of ingame management but also do think hes been let down by the board, good luck in the future michael
@FTLOB98: Unlike many previous Boro managers on the whole I’ve enjoyed the football under Carrick but his inability/stubbornness to change things, whether tactics or personnel, when it wasn’t working ultimately led to his failure in the role. More tactically astute HC/M next please. #UTB
@IwanEvans19: He’s done a good job of developing players, but we need someone with a bit of backbone. Danny Rohl only obvious upgrade
@awbuswell: Probably the right choice. He’s done well for you guys to start with but with the team you’ve got, you should have been in the playoffs the last two seasons at least. Need someone in who’s going to give you that final push
@TheEightball80: Right decision. Nice bloke but tactically awful. Should have got us up in his first season. We’ve regressed ever since. Hopefully the next manager can help me rediscover my mojo again for next season.
@minto7070: Correct decision – this has already made me feel some sense of excitement for the new season. Carrick had 3 years and continued to make the same mistakes. He isn’t capable of change it seems.
@mark33198050: Just my opinion, I agree last season should have been better but would rather we were in a chance for the play offs last game of the season than fighting relegation!!
@daveyballyXIIII: I am bit surprised it’s took this long after the season has finished, Carrick did his best but it just was not good enough, this might make him a better manager in the future, hopefully a new manager is ready to take the reigns in the near future- UTB
@MatthewBye13: Sad how it ended but he’s given us some great memories over the years – wish him all the best!
@jamesy_utb: Good decision – a defeat on the opening day and the moods toxic before the seasons started. It’s just not worked out
@kieranstead95: Absolutely gutted it never worked for him! Clearly a decent coach and a genuine bloke but the club has went backwards in his 3yrs. Been shot under the bus a few time anorl like selling our best players and not replacing them! Who’s next?
