Farke frustrated and fans baffled at Tyrhys Dolan escaping red card for foul on Junior Firpo

Daniel Farke was left frustrated and fans rather baffled at Tyrhys Dolan escaping a red card for a foul on Junior Firpo.

Firpo was on the receiving end of a challenge from Blackburn’s Tyrhys Dolan in the 62nd minute, which many, including Farke, believed warranted a red card due to its recklessness.

However, the referee only issued a yellow card, leading to Farke’s visible discontent at full time while a clip of the incident went viral on social media.

Leeds felt hard done by some contentious decisions made by referee Lewis Smith, Tanaka also deemed to have fouled a Blackburn player potentially outside the box, the foul a soft one.

Blackburn: Pears (GK), Brittain, Pickering, Hyam, Tronstad, Cantwell (Hedges 90’), Dolan, Batth, Ohashi (Gueye 63’), Beck, Travis (C). Subs not used: Hilton (GK), McFadzean, Rankin-Costello, Leonard, Buckley, Cozier-Duberry, Baker.

Leeds: Meslier (GK), Bogle, Firpo, Struijk, Rodon, James, Rothwell, Piroe (Bamford 69’), Aaronson (Solomon 69’), Tanaka, Gnonto (Ramazani 69’). Subs not used: Darlow (GK), Joseph, Guilavogui, Debayo, Wober, Crew.

Referee: Lewis Smith

Booked: Travis, Dolan (Rovers) Bogle, Ramazani (Leeds)

Venue: Ewood Park

Attendance: 21,942 (7,501 away)

Knee high, Dolan makes contact with the returning Firpo. Farke said afterwards, per Leeds Live: “I do not normally ask for red cards. Everyone can judge for themselves on the replay, because it looks like I am asking for excuses.

“The penalty, Ao was blocked from the referee and out of this there is a penalty. Should have defended better.

“I am not out for excuses. We could have started better.

“It sometimes feels a bit harsh. I think we should have defended the situation better (for the penalty).

“In the Championship we have no VAR so they sometimes give wrong throw-ins against the team chasing the game when the other is trying to waste some time.

“Some other big decisions are not right. Sometimes it is difficult to accept but we are not out for excuses.

“If they were wrong decisions or situations… I want to concentrate on what we could have done better.”

On having words with the referee and Travis as well as the half time message: “Not happy with our start. When you have such a load and this is the Championship, away game like this can be a hard half. We had to be ready for the battle after a comfortable win on Wednesday.

“Frustrated we did not start well. We had the third game in six days, early kick-off. They had one game in last 10 days. I was frustrated. Asked a few questions at the end, between us.

“Not why we lost. If we played in overload for 30 minutes it could have changed the game. We are far away from being perfect.”

When questioned about losing it in the first half, Farke said: “Totally agree. Congratulations to Blackburn. They had the better start and deserved it.

“We started too slowly and gave away too many unnecessary free-kicks. The penalty was the same. I don’t want to be too critical. Lazy is too harsh, but we did not go in for the duels properly.

“We should have been more on it in the first half, should have been quicker in the head. Blackburn were not the most dangerous team because we had moments to score, but this is why we were behind.

“Top class chance from the spot for them. Second half was always hard at a side like this. They have had less load than us. Don’t want to search for excuses.”

Farke on Firpo: “Rusty, but it was due to his behaviour he was suspended for three games and broke his rhythm. No excuses. Better second half, but not at top level in the first half. Schmidt or Byram would have given us options today, but unavailable due to injuries. I was hoping for a better first half and sadly was not.”

Blackburn boss John Eustace said: “Outstanding performance. Proud of the group win, lose or draw. A pleasure to work with. Proud of the boys.

“Freshened a few things up. Only our second game, not our third. That played into our hands a little maybe.

“We were brave playing out from the back. Gave them a few opportunities, but tried to play the right way. Did not just sit in.

“Very important nobody gets carried away. This league is relentless.”

Eustace speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire: “Outstanding performance and very proud of the boys. All round we were brave trying to play out from the back and while it caused us a couple of problems and gave them a couple of opportunities, we tried to play the right way and with good attacking football as well, trying to go toe-to-toe with a good team.

“They did have lots of the ball and that was always going to happen but it is important when we get the opportunities we have to be more clinical. But the most important thing is we got the three points.

“It is important that Todd Cantwell is off the mark now as I think it has been playing on his mind a little bit. He could have scored a couple more but he is getting in the right areas and playing some fantastic football.”

@CamBurrows92: Still wouldn’t have scored. Even if it was #lufc 😂

@JaysonBoocker: Stonewall red this, the Blackburn commentary were questioning if it was even a foul 😂😂😂

@Jakekelly17: This is an appalling decision 😂 refs looking right at it aswell

@connorholt92: How on earth is that not a red?

@Mikey__LUFC: Wild how the ref is stood 5 yards away looking directly at is. Another piss poor performance. We were bang average too mind. #LUFC

@BenGrime_: Right in front of him daft cunt

@Davey_Ennis_1: Wild how this was only a booking. Took him about 5 mins to decide as well.

@PriestleyMatty: They’ll be another apology letter in the morning.

@chrispollard48: Lancashire ref I reckon…..unforgiveable

@OttawayOttaway: Would have been for Firpo!

@lufcalexx: wouldn’t have made a difference but what the fuck 😂😂😂😂

@JohnmjtJt1919: Ref has a perfect view. How’s that not a red card !!!!

@Lufc11P: Another Apology letter incoming

@ConnorMOT92: Red all day that but we always get shite refs 🫠 #LUFC

@dommer14: That’s fucking outrageous. If that’s not a red then what is

@SirJamesNiner: Shocking tackle.

@Langley99Mark: Agree but as always poor refereeing

@CiaraWarrington: That’s a horrendous challenge. Red all day long.

@WAFLL3: Shocking

@billywigwam13: Absolutely should have been a red card & along with the generous penalty & not clamping down on time wasting properly despite 10 mins added. The Ref was poor. But then again so were most our team & the boss today. #lufc #MOT

@carlos_fenton: How was that not a red card… there’s some referees out there who have it in for some teams

@rogergray70: Then he kicked ball away twice later in game too to waste time

@SgtMattB: Appalling challenge. Absolutely should have been a red card

@StephenCra44736: I’m sure it was a yellow. Don’t remember Ty having to walk. But then again my memory isn’t what it used to be. I was sat at the other side. He didn’t actually touch their player

@BadNeighbourDNB: That’s horrific, a red all day long. But it’s against us so……..

@YorkiePuds44: I could understand if is view was impaired but christ he is literally on top of it
