Fans worry over non league club’s future following 16-1 defeat

Fans have been left with worry over a non league club’s future following a 16-1 defeat that they suffered on Tuesday night.

There have unfortunately been concerns for a good while now over Durham City as we previously reported, and their latest defeat has raised even more questions over the side’s direction.

92 spectators were in attendance to watch hosts’ Carlisle City smash SIXTEEN past their North East opposition, a scoreline that has captured many people’s attention.

It couldn’t have started worse for Durham as they were behind in the 1st minute as Kirkup’s header was finished off by Irving at close range.

The lead was doubled in the 5th minute as Frampton saved Irving’s initial shot, only for Palmer to be on hand to fire in the rebound.

This was repeated on the 9th minute as Frampton was unlucky to see Palmer finish off another rebound. By the 10th minute, there was a fourth City goal as Kerr’s cross was swept in by Irving.

It seemed at this stage that every shot was turning into a goal, though there was one occasion when Palmer did fire wide on the 13th minute. Durham keeper Frampton also made numerous fine saves during the evening and stopped Kirkup’s header a third of the way through the first half.

In the 20th minute, Palmer notched a quickfire hat-trick with a well-taken goal after beating the offside trap. The hat-tricks were then doubled in the 24th minute as Irving headed in at the back post to make it 6-0, with an assist again from Kirkup. Durham won two corners in quick succession with Murray saving from Foster’s effort.

Atkinson fired over on the 30th minute and the offside flag also thwarted a few Carlisle City attacks. Irving got his fourth from the penalty spot on the 33th minute to make it 7-0 and quickly added his fifth on the night, on the 37th minute, as he fired into the bottom corner, 8-0 it was at half time.

Understandably, there was some understandable conversations at the break amongst fans as to whether the away team would even bother coming back out of the dressing rooms, however they did so to their credit.

The half began with Holt firing wide and then Kerr being adjudged offside as he looked to have scored. The unlucky ex-Carlisle United player then hit the base of the post with Frampton beaten. However, on the 51th minute, it was 9-0 with Palmer adding his fourth of the night, scoring from very close range after Dixon ran and crossed well. Double figures should have been reached by Holt, but again his effort was wide again.

Dixon went on a pacy run in the second half to add further woes for the Durham defence as he went on to create most of the goals in this period. In the 56th minute however, Clarke pulled a goal back for Durham to make it 9-1, only their third goal scored on their travels this season. Kerr once again had a goal ruled for offside before, in the 58th minute, Kerr hit the ball past Frampton and this time there was no flag, and the score was 10-1.

It was 11-1 as Palmer added his fifth with Dixon then winning a penalty on the 62nd minute, taken by Kerr, but his over-hit shot rattled the windows behind the goal. Dixon then won a corner on 67 minutes, and this led to Palmer tapping in his sixth and making it 12-1.

Kerr redeemed himself for the penalty miss as he added his second on the 69th minute to make it 13-1 and the trhashing continued with Palmer getting his seventh on 71 minutes.

In the 80th minute, the unlucky Mpwilu turned into his own net from Dixon’s cross and it was 15-1.

The scoring was rounded off on the 88th minute as the impressive Dixon again created, with Johnstone this time finishing off.

Carlisle City end their match report by saying: “Undoubtedly, games like this do nothing for the credibility of football at this level or indeed for the EBAC Northern League. It remains to be seen whether this score-line will even feature in the league records come the end of the season, as it will take tremendous courage for Durham to keep continuing.”

CLUB STATEMENT:

“Durham City can confirm that manager Mark Sherwood has left the club.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Mark for his efforts in difficult circumstances and wish him all the best for the future.”

@Shaunmeatballs: 16-1 thats not good

@NEFootballScene: Wow all is not well at Durham AFC, heartbreaking to see them in the state they are in!

@Sam_GFC: Durham 😔

@MrFeesh: Something badly wrong at Durham ☹️

@LRbix: Looks like an early exit from the @theofficialnl I guess..

@hirdy_alex: And the owner had the audacity to go on sky a fortnight ago and complain about how Mike Ashley ran NUFC. He’s killing this club

@WC7_23: Don’t know a single individual from @DurhamCity_AFC but fair play to all involved for giving it their all each week and attempting to keep the club in existence. Respect to everyone associated with the club 👏🏼

@Kyler88: Fair play for continuing to tweet and update. Would have thrown my phone long ago

@paddyh1888: It’s not about winning , it’s about taking part and having fun at the end of the day

@ScottyT9804: Sad times. For Durham. Watched them a lot when i was a kid. Was signed on for them for a short while years ago. Feel for them.

@SaveDurhamCity: Time to do something @seedorf77

@JChatfield94: How does this happen? At any level of the game? Wouldn’t the opposition start to get a bit bored once they were 12 or so goals ahead?

@wilflaz2019: @SunderlandAFC it could have been worse.

@eugeneh84: Rowan Atkinson, Alun Armstrong, Bryan Robson, Darren Grimes, Pink Panther, The Maggie Thatcher Cardboard Cutout, The Miners Gala, Every prick rejected by Oxbridge, Laura Pidcock, Sherlock Holmes brother. Your boys took one hell of a beating.

@lukebailey90: Always good to get an early wicket.

@sevans1308: Feel sorry for them – watched them play Birtley few weeks back and they grafted their arses off – put up a lot of fight for a team in their league position. Such a shame seeing these tankings every week – but admire the resilience of the players and staff to keep going each game

@pjwhitfield: Steve Bruce “we can take a lot of positives from the game, now we dust ourselves down & go again”

@liammutimer: Tell ya what being a Durham city might just be worse than being a Sunderland fan
