Fans snub Sky Sports and turn to Sunderland YouTuber who beats TV crew to Defoe’s return

Fans took to snub Sky Sports on Deadline Day and instead turn to a Sunderland YouTuber who beats TV crew to Jermain Defoe’s return.

DJ and presenter Wee Phillie was trending on Twitter after he came in with an exclusive scoop on their player’s return to the Stadium of Light outfit who were in need of some good news.

They had just seen their manager sacked off the back of a 6-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers, and are hoping for a turnaround in form yet sit 3rd in the League One table.

Defoe was rumoured to be coming back to his former club, though a lot of other League One sides were also looking at him after his exit from Rangers.

But it was always meant to be that he’d go to where he once was in a spell between 2015 and 2017.

Phillie – real name Phil Monk – was on hand to be part of his return, and as part of YouTube channel SAFC Fan TV, held his own broadcast.

And with fans waiting to hear the much needed confirmation that Defoe had arrived at the club, Phillie managed to get there before the national media.

The fan headed down to the Academy of Light from his home in Fulwell – and for his effort got the first word from the man himself.

“It was just spur of the moment,” he said via Sunderland Echo. “We were running a streaming show because we were expecting Jermain Defoe to be announced and we were just following Sky Sports News.

“It must have been about half nine and I thought ‘I might as well have a run out to the academy’.

“At this point, we thought Jermain was already in the academy because lads who had been there earlier said they had seen a car pull in with blacked-out windows,” said Phil.

“Then a taxi pulled up. and stopped at the gates. I could see what looked like Jermain Defoe in the back but he had his mask on and his hood pulled up.

“I knocked on the window, he wound the window down and I asked him if he was happy to be here. He pulled his mask down and said ‘What do you think?’ – then everyone in the car park started to cheer.”

The stream went viral and Phillie’s name was trending: “The feedback has been great – we were trending at number two on Twitter at one point, which was unreal,” said Phil.

He believes Defoe could be the critical difference between Sunderland getting promoted or having to settle for the playoffs this season: “I think he will score goals for fun in that division,” he said.

“Jermain Defoe is the best finisher I have ever seen at Sunderland, even better than Kevin Phillips.

“It is probably a bit much to ask him to play 90 minutes week in and week out but think what he could so as an impact sub coming off the bench.”

Upon his return, Defoe said: “I can’t stop smiling because this is a special move for me for many reasons. I’ve had so many messages saying, ‘remember when you said you would come back’, as I said that I would one day and when I left, I wasn’t ready to leave. I have a special bond with the fans here and the club is in a fantastic position to get promoted. I want to be a part of more special times here and I’m looking forward to it.”

Kristjaan Speakman added: “We all know how high highly regarded Jermain is amongst our fan base and within the wider community. He returns at a crucial time in our season, and we firmly believe that he can have a positive influence on and off the pitch. Jermain’s personality is infectious and his mindset is elite. He is a proven winner and a goalscorer and we are delighted to welcome him back to the Stadium of Light.”
