Fans react to League Two side Shrewsbury Town being placed under a one-window transfer fee restriction by the EFL.
This means Salop are unable sign players where a transfer fee is payable, for the remainder of the 2026 summer window.
Shrewsbury can only look to free agents and loan players, the restriction down to a late payment to a club in relation to a loan agreement.
Shrewsbury Town can confirm the club has been placed under a one-window transfer fee restriction in accordance with EFL Regulation 52.6.

The club said in a statement on the 6th of July: “Shrewsbury Town can confirm the club has been placed under a one-window transfer fee restriction under EFL Regulation 52.6.
“The restriction applies only for the duration of the current summer transfer window, which closes on Tuesday 1 September 2026, and affects only the registration of players where a transfer fee is payable.
“Supporters can be reassured that the club remains able to sign free agents and loan players throughout the remainder of the window, meaning the manager will continue to have the opportunity to strengthen his squad despite the restriction.
“The restriction follows a late payment to a club in relation to a loan agreement, which was made outside the timescale required under EFL regulations.
“As soon as the club became aware the payment had not been made as expected, the outstanding amount was settled in full immediately.
“The club accepts full responsibility for the late payment and has taken the necessary steps to ensure a similar situation does not arise again.
“We would once again like to reassure supporters that the manager will continue to be able to strengthen his squad during the remainder of this transfer window through free-agent and loan signings. The restriction applies solely to the registration of players whose transfer involves the payment of a fee.”
Fans react to Shrewsbury Town being hit with a punishment by the EFL…
@willthomas67: What an embarrassment. I try not to beat the club too much but paying a loan fee should be incredibly straight forward. Even if we weren’t going to sign a player for a fee, which I doubt we were, we can’t now. We need a new regime.
@harryxstuart: Roland Wycherley, you have ruined a club and are a stain on the amazing town which it serves. Inexcusable incompetence. Roland Out.
@AFCSTFC88: I’m sure the meeting will be interesting tomorrow…
@Max18039670: tbf doubt we’d buy any players even if this restriction wasn’t in place, just loans now #Salop
@Jdownes15: Legacy ruined. Some way to celebrate 30 years, get the fuck out of my football club you horrible old man
@georgestfc: absolutely brilliant. SELL THE CLUB.
@Camevans97: It’s been nice knowing you EFL. Non league pending
@TomGriffBC: Can’t just let us enjoy football for one day…
@ROLANDOUT2024: Thanks Roland.
@adpow88: Some way to celebrate 30 years!
@Salop13STFC1886: WYCHERLEY OUT!
@archiechello: Nice one Roland
@Lescotts: No surprises their Roland’s finished!! Better hope the sale is approved!
Sam De Motte: Embarrassing really, they have fucked up here. Basically more freebies and cheap loans again
Adam Rodgers: We only ever sign free agents and loans anyway!
Alfie Griffiths: Ownership being blamed but technically CEO Dooley is in charge of the payments being made, so is he at fault for missing the payment or for it not being paid?, the clubs paid it straight away so it’s not like there isn’t any money about its just who’s at fault..
Russell Thelwell: Not like us to fall foul of administrative errors is it? 🙄
Alex Bradbury: This takeover needs happen now 😡😡
Jordan Phillips: Fuck off 😡😡😡😡 and Man City can do what they want but a league 2 team can’t even buy a player for £3.50 😂 games gone
Daz Carding: What is going on? We used to be a great family and community club and now the club is far from that. Feel myself becoming more and more disheartened. What’s happened to the club I fell in love with as a kid?
Christopher Wakeman: Utterly ridiculous. Just as people are starting to feel slightly more positive about the club we find ourselves in this totally avoidable situation. The way the clubs being run is completely unprofessional.
Dave Askew: Probably didn’t have any money to spend anyway
Richard Vernon: I assume this is happening because of the error we made last season which was suspended unless we messed up which we have again
Nick Statham: Very reassuring, thanks 🤦♂️ Amateur hour strikes again.
Richard Thomas: Hope this does not put off any potential new owners 😕
Sam Pugh: Just as we was about to spend loads of money 😂😂
Stu Davies: How many times have we messed up with admin related tasks over the years 🙄 Club is still run like it’s the 1990s
Matthew Dorricott: Dont panic we only sign free agents and loan player as we have no money
Bobby Clark: Late payment of something….. bloody chaos as always
Can’t be restricted if we don’t spend anyway pic.twitter.com/ZNsu6yob0Y
