Fans mock Salford City as they confirm new permanent manager

Fans of other clubs have chosen to mock Salford City, as they confirm the new permanent manager appointment of Gary Bowyer.

The League Two club have appointed Bowyer, who had an 11-game spell as interim boss, on a two-year deal.

He had been employed by Derby County, working with their Under-23s side, a role he took on last September, and it was expected that he would return to Pride Park after his spell with the Ammies.

However, after a U-turn, the club have appointed him as a permanent successor to Richie Wellens after guiding the club to 20 points from their final 11 games, enough to see him named as League Two manager of the month for April.

The club missed out on the play-off spots by two points, despite a final day win at Leyton Orient, however his impact was enough to earn him a crack at the job full time. How long he’ll last is anyone’s guess.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Salford City is pleased to announce that Gary Bowyer has signed a two-year deal to become Manager of the Club on a permanent basis!

The 49-year-old arrived in March on a short-term deal from Derby County Under-23s and inspired The Ammies to 20 points from the final 11 games, earning the Manager of the Month award for April 2021 too.

Improved performances under the former Blackpool boss reignited Salford’s promotion ambitions, but despite a 3-0 win against Leyton Orient on the final day results elsewhere left The Ammies two points off the top seven.

However Gary’s impact on the Club, the players and the staff has been telling and he is eager to take up the challenge of leading Salford again.

“I’m really excited, it’s all happened very, very quickly and I’m delighted that it has.

“I have to thank Wayne Rooney and Derby County for their role that they have played in all of this, they’ve been magnificent for me.

“Now it’s a case of getting to work very quickly, everybody was very accommodating when I was here and made a real impression on me in the short space of time so it was a very easy decision.

“We’re really excited now leading into the summer, obviously there is a lot of work to do in terms of organising pre-season games, getting to work on the squad.

“We’ve got a real good core group here, and we’ll be looking to add the right characters and the right players to hopefully improve the squad further and give us a real opportunity going into next season.”

Club Captain Ash Eastham added: “The appointment of the Manager on a permanent basis is fantastic news for the Club going forward!

“His positivity, professional demands and man management skills have been reflected in the team’s performances and results since he joined the club, and we are looking forward to working further with Gary next season.

“As players we now need to physically and mentally re-charge for what I feel will be a season for our fans to be hugely excited about when the league campaign returns.”

We would like to echo Gary’s comments and thank Derby County for their co-operation, and of course extend a warm welcome back to the Gaffer!
