Fans mock MK Dons amid growing calls to sack manager after defeat to Salford

Fans mock MK Dons amid growing calls to sack manager after a 1-0 defeat to Salford City in League Two on Monday night.

Frankie Okoronkwo got the only goal of the game for Karl Robinson’s side, picking up their first league win of 2024/25 season.

The debutant’s strike means that the Ammies rise to 14th in the table, while the playoff hangover continues for Milton Keynes Dons, slipping to 19th, a point above the drop zone after 4 games played.

Salford City: Jones (C), Edwards, Ashley, Negru, Fornah, Stockton (Kouassi 70), Woodburn (Watson 70), Chesters (Mnoga 80), Garbutt, Austerfield, Okoronkwo (Adelakun 62)

Subs: Young, Nmai, Taylor

Yellow Cards: Edwards (60)

Goals: Okoronkwo (42)

MK Dons: McGill, Gilbey (C), Kelly (Leigh 60), Wearne (Finch 60) (Williams 90), Tomlinson, Nemane, Offord, Hendry (Harrison 71), Maguire, Lemonheigh-Evans, Tripp

Subs: Harness, Lewington, Tucker

Venue: Moor Lane

Attendance: 2,227 (231)

Referee: Benjamin Speedie

MK Dons boss Mike Williamson said, per miltonkeynes.co.uk: “The points return obviously is not acceptable. We know the lads are all hurting in there. I’ve been critical over being clinical, and decision making but I can’t be critical over their effort, energy and desire to want to score a goal.

“Everyone knows, it’s obvious, but we have to make sure everyone is sticking to the process. It will turn, it will change, we know that. It’s not far away. Of course, we have to be more clinical, take our chances and not get hit on the counter and the lads know that.

“Goals change games – last week we got the goals at good times and we went on and we felt comfortable. Tonight, we were always chasing. When we fall behind, it affects our decisions, and we haven’t found the quality yet.

“We’ve created more than enough to score, but they’re just not going in the back of the net. Everyone is frustrated and being very self-critical, and we will be as coaches as well. We need to pick up points, but we know we’re on the right track. We’ve always felt a goal was coming, their keeper pulled off some very good saves but we just weren’t clinical.”

Salford’s Karl Robinson said: “We knew today we had to be a little bit cuter in our possession, we had to be a little bit more compact, a bit more aggressive in certain areas.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t score a second, we had some wonderful chances, and to be fair to MK so did they. You know you’re going to have to be on one of your best performances and we did that in large parts, but there’s no point getting carried away on one win. We’re only going to get stronger, we’re only going to get better, this is going to be a long season.

“I thought his (Frankie) first 15 minutes were terrible, but his strength of character to have the confidence within yourself to take someone on and finish the way he did was very very good.”

As mentioned, fans of other clubs took to mock MK Dons amid growing calls to sack manager Mike Williamson after defeat to Salford…

@shaunmulhern95: Williamson tactically outthought again, just so poor. You can look at XG and data analytics all you want, that’s 3 loses from 4 in the league. Won’t be long until serious questions are asked of this head coach #MKDons

@TLedge86: Williamson just seems to be another overrated ‘modern’ manager. Gateshead are doing better since he left – playoffs last season and top of the league so far this season.

@Jamie_Hudson_: If he doesn’t get 2 wins in the next 2 I can see him getting the sack.

@up_the_dons: Thought you were pissing the league this year lads?

@tstafford92: Get in. Watched that and you lot could be heading to the national league. Would be great to see you out the football league and its downhill from there.

@DanW05560918: Drop the Dons, in fact, drop out of the football league.

@K_Motson: Yeah I’m gonna be honest lads, signing Crowley won’t fix that. Your midfield completely open, which exposed your defenders. You’re lucky you played Salford. Play a Doncaster or Gillingham like that and you’ll get a right pasting. Williamson should be embarrassed serving up that.

@Jack_jones067: That was a bloody woeful watch, cheers for giving us the best RB in the league tho 👍

@TheDB30: As a Gateshead fan I’ll always be grateful for what he did and certainly don’t wish bad things for him but his lack of willingness to change things cost us in several games that we should’ve won or got at least a draw out of. Teams are tactically wiser to it now it seems.

@GP1131: All that money spent and you lost to a side as horrendous as Salford… That takes some doing

@sam__mkd: see you next year solihull and halifax

@sonnyjbrown02: Embarrassment of a club

@JoshLUFC17: You lot are woeful what have I just watched 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

@ashscoff91: Couldn’t happen to nicer club

@JordonByrne_: Fucking joke, won’t be surprised if MW get sacked from the start of this season. All these players and you can’t score shortly Salford and play that boring. League 2 again next season

@bardell_monty: what the fuck was that

@pearcyyy: Honestly the worst performance so far this season. Slow, predictable, wasted 45mins kicking long. Where was the desire? More desire in the second half 20mins against Watford. CM needs sorting, hopefully Carroll & KTS will be the answer. Good job it’s a long season

@Cathaloc7: So bad from Mk Dons. Salford are average. No threat up front. Will Hendry be the striker for the season? I’m not sure what was the game plan. 4 games, 1 win. Saturday is a must win. Otherwise I’m not sure where the club will end up.

@AshPalmer88: It literally looked like the players had just done a 46 game season. They were all leggy as fuck after about 30 minutes. Shocking. No pace at all. Nemane gives it a go down the wing but with what help. Awful. 2nd home clean sheet in 26 games for them shows you how bad you were.

@donsince81: Pathetic, this manager has to soon be under some pressure. Basically a whole new team and the same problems as last season not fixed

@harrymkd_: sacked in the morning

@mikebromham: Lacking any cutting edge . Missing a goalscorer.

@KeithFrankish1: Awful. The football is so slow and predictable. Just seems like the players aren’t allowed to go away from the game plan and as a result the football is boring to watch. Just awful.

@___moAce: you guys suck so bad

@FalknerJosh: What have you lot done to Kelly 👀 gone from running the midfield, MOTM after MOTM and out working everyone on the pitch with us at Crawley to looking like that tonight 🤦‍♂️ he does not look like he wants to be there 😳

@marshonomics: Brilliant! I thought they were going to win the league!!!

@danrobbomk: Embarrassing

@SocialNomadX: Losing to these lot is embarrassing!! 😳

@alextodd32: Did we buy the right Kelly ?

@oldmancat444: Trash performance. Honestly, your players do not appear fit and it looks like they have no clue what to do with the ball.

@Dons_Hamid: On sky next week aswell 👍👍👍👍

@gary4dons: Poor tonight no energy or desire!

@samuel_ozzy1403: embarrassing, every one of them a months wages deducted. the players and manager need a serious talking too if they want to stay here, we have money to replace every single one of them. they need to learn they’re replaceable

@waingro84: A dreadful advert for league two football

@JoeBlackk_11: Can we not have two fucking players to take a corner

@Tom_C09: How was your own medicine?

@waingro84: Cant see the new owners putting up with these p*** poor performances for long 🤬🙄

@OllieM__: fuck off, useless cunts

@mark_blubeberry: I’m done with MW, out played again tonight. It might come but not with this fool. Cannot defend for shit

@JackGoodwin: Lads, really? Ffs 😂 That was truly shocking to watch
