Fans left laughing at what De Bruyne had to say on current England squad

Fans have been left laughing at what Kevin De Bruyne had to say on the current England squad, ahead of Sunday’s fixture between the two sides.

The Manchester City midfielder is set to be part of the Belgium side against the Three Lions in the Nations League at Wembley at a 5:00pm kick-off.

Both teams got as far as the World Cup semi finals in Russia two years ago, now the Belgian star reckons Gareth Southgate’s side have got the potential to do even better.

“They should be very excited,” the 29-year-old said of England. “It’s a very young team with a lot of potential.”

“They should aim to win the next Euros and World Cup. I think they have that potential.

“There are always a lot of teams who want to win it, but I think the team they have – the players who play in top clubs – they should do that.”

It has been 54 long years since England last won a major trophy, and that was the 1966 World Cup.

Former Swansea, Wigan and Everton boss, turned Belgium manager, Roberto Martinez, agreed that Gareth Southgate has an impressive squad.

“His players are as good as anyone individually in world football and it is just a matter of time that they will get that trophy or major result in a major tournament,” he said.

England are currently ranked fourth in the world, compared to their opponents Belgium who are top of the FIFA rankings, after beating england twice at the 2018 World Cup.

England come into tonight’s game off the back a 3-0 victory against Wales at Wembley on Thursday, with goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Conor Coady and Danny Ings, while Jack Grealish was man of the match.

Southgate, who played alongside Paul Gascoigne for England, played down the talk that Grealish is like Gazza.

“I am very conscious I don’t want to be dampening the enthusiasm for Jack,” the England manager said of the Aston Villa captain. “But when you are talking about Gascoigne, there’s not a player in English history who was at that level, in my opinion.

“I don’t want that to seem a criticism of Jack. I just feel that Gascoigne is so unique and was such an incredible player, it’s a bit like talking about Bobby Moore.

“I kind of understood some of the comparison but I just think with Gascoigne as an individual, it was just on another level to anything else I ever played with.”

Belgium will be without key forwards Dries Mertens and Eden Hazard on Sunday.

“Belgium deserve huge credit for the consistency of their performances,” England manager Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They had a tremendous World Cup, beating Brazil within that. I think Roberto has done a fantastic job with them.

“Over the past couple of years in particular they have started to deliver performances which their talent warranted.

“We have got a great opportunity to have a fantastic game and a really good test and also try to advance ourselves to the latter stages of the Nations League.

“There is a lot riding on the game for both teams.”

There was also praise for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, 22, becoming an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

MBE ?? I’m incredibly honoured and humbled. As a young black man from Wythenshawe, never did I think I would be accepting an MBE, never mind an MBE at the age of 22. This is a very special moment for myself and my family, but particularly my mum who is the real deserving recipient of the honour. The fight to protect our most vulnerable children is far from over. I would be doing my community, and the families I have met and spoken with, an injustice if I didn’t use this opportunity to respectfully urge the Prime Minister, who recommended me for this honour, to support our children during the October half term with an extension of the voucher scheme, as the furlough scheme comes to an end and we face increased unemployment. Another sticking plaster, but one that will give the parents of millions of children in the UK just one less thing to worry about. Let’s stand together in saying that no children in the UK should be going to bed hungry. As I have said many times before, no matter your feeling or opinion, not having access to food is NEVER the child’s fault.

He campaigned for the government to allow about 1.3 million children to claim free school meal vouchers in England’s summer holidays during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Firstly it’s an amazing achievement – wonderful for him and his family, the recognition,” said Southgate. “But he didn’t start this project to get the recognition.

“He started it because it was something he had been affected by, that he cared passionately about, and for somebody of his age to be able to make the difference he has is a phenomenal achievement.

“We’re all very proud of him. We gave him a special round of applause this morning.

“You can only marvel at what he’s achieved and the difference he’s made to kids who will understand the difference he’s made but also who, at the moment, won’t understand but will be incredibly grateful for him in years to come.”
