Fans label Hull City boss Tim Walter ‘sour’ as he takes issue with Reading’s physical play after his side’s 2-0 pre-season defeat.
The game saw Ryan Longman, Omur, and Oscar Estupinan go off injured after encounters with Reading players, with off-the-ball altercations occurred due to rough challenges seen a several of Reading’s friendlies.
Ben Elliott and Sam Smith scored in each half from Ben Elliott and Sam Smith to cap off the Royals’ matchday preparations before next Saturday’s League One opener at Birmingham City.
But it seems Tim Walter, who became the new Hull head coach at the end of May, replacing the sacked Liam Rosenior, didn’t like how his opposition played at the weekend.
“What should I say? It’s a friendly and they played like it was the world championship final,” Walter said to Hull Live after the game.
“No excuses, no excuses, but it was a bit hard, especially playing with some slaps in the face and maybe also in a friendly you can punish them more with the cards. It’s the style of playing. Maybe in League One, it’s the style they will play. We have a different style and we stayed strong and we kept going playing that style.”

Tim Walter wasn’t overly impressed with the physical nature of yesterday’s friendly against Reading. Longman put his shoulder out, Abdus hurt and Oscar also off. #hcafc https://t.co/1Y7plGnjmx

He’s been left frustrated with four defeats and two draws in their six games, the state of his squad, wants the club to move quickly for new signings, with Acun Ilicali and Tan Kesler trying to reassure that they will come before the deadline.
On fans being concerned over the lack of quality in the squad compared to the one that finished 7th last season, Walter added, per Hull Live: “That’s what you see on the pitch for sure, I see the same, but all I can do is train with them and try to improve them.
“I’d rather have more players and more quality in the squad like I’ve had in my previous career steps. But what should I do?
“I won’t buy the players because I do not have the money. So we need to bring them in and that’s all I can say.
“We need more players, and next week the season will start. And if we get those players, we can have a good season. If not, then it’s a long season.”
Reading’s Ruben Selles meanwhile said, per Reading Chronicle: “It was an intense game against a unique opponent in the way they want to play in possession.
“It was a difficult test and a very quick turnover because we played on Wednesday.
“We play every time as we try to play a normal league game.
“The really good challenge starts next week.
“The boys, now we’ve been together for more than a year, know what they’re doing, and the relations are really good.
“The effort is remarkable so now we need to see how we cope with the pressures of playing for three points or qualification in cups every time. Let’s see if we can keep the level.”

As mentioned, fans label the Hull City boss ‘sour’ as he takes issue with Reading’s physical play after his side’s defeat…
@SarryHands: BREAKING. Football team plays match in the aim to win it. Groundbreaking stuff
@AndyRFCCharman: Is he related to Steve Evans?
@Lee_UuRrZz: Sounds like another Steve Evans
@JimNo1871: God forbid we play our final pre season game at the intensity we want to start the season with
@2gqtc4rd4s: What even is a “world championship final” in football terms?
@PrincelyRoyalty: What kind of complete nonsense is this? It is the last friendly before the league starts – first choice lineups, competitive match intensity, players still wanting to impress the coach… I think this says more about the Hull manager, and his lack of ambition, than #ReadingFC 🦁
@NJK20171: Sour grapes. I’ll take that as a compliment. I have watched so many games over the last 6 or 7 years where the players look as they don’t want to be there. The attitude in pre-season has been spot on. #readingfc
@gavpsmith: 😂😂 one week before the season you have to play them like a league game or you will get rolled opening day. train as you play so why shouldn’t that apply to friendlies. you can’t just turn it on and off. sour grapes
@ally1871: Kanu won the ball and just happened to take the little midget guy with him at the same time! Was a great challenge 🤷🏻♂️
@andrew197516: @HullCity going down !!
@JCS872: Bitter much.
@RRock5150: They try harder than us
@dadros70: That guy sounds like a bit of a bell end – can see him not lasting very long at Hull with that sort of attitude
@alwestie106: Lol no we’re just better than your lot. See you next year.
@danielhewett86: LoL grow up mate
@ProperFootieFan: I’d be worried Hull players weren’t fussed about winning a football game
@dr_stifler: Translation- they were outclassed
@BuddNigel: Utter nonsense, embarrassing himself with comments like that! There is no such thing as a friendly, you play any football match with one intended outcome which is to win!
@MikePea73444529: What a stupid comment.
@Jodybrown112: We played like it was a championship final!!!! Bro it’s a game of football. How else are you meant to play. Did he just want us to be walk overs lol 😜 don’t be a bad loser. Good luck in the championship punks
@BrownyHull: Wait until he sees what the championship is like! Got to toughen up
@AshleyTrevarro1: Tbf the fans haven’t been overly impressed with the way preseason has been handled
@JordanCottle: they played like cones in a passing drill for our second
@fred_rfc: shock horror league one side plays a championship side and wants to win it 😨 #readingfc
@deanocx: He’s in for a rude awakening to English football. Good luck to #hcafc 🫣
@EHurley02: Bros sour that he lost to #ReadingFC 😂😂😂 what a Muppet
@MarkHopgoo44290: What an absolute bellend. We played with the intensity that we’ll need to take to Brum next week. Hull should have kept Rosenior as manager as he is a class act.
@ohbobbins: Should be concentrating on his own team rather than us. If that’s his attitude in general they are bang in trouble. However, they’re the second Champ team that we’ be made to look very, very average. #readingfc
@Stainesy95: Ha, A game of football game where a team tries to win. Shame on us.
@Reading106: What even is the “World Championship Final”? #Readingfc
Great preseason from Hull though. #readingfc https://t.co/65sBZaRGgf pic.twitter.com/W2xhwTEsmD
