Fans hit out at Sky Sports pundits criticising lack of atmosphere at Premier League match

Fans have taken to hit out at several Sky Sports pundits criticising the lack of atmosphere at a Premier League match last weekend.

Jamie Redknapp took issue with the noise levels inside Old Trafford on Sunday (4:30pm kick off, live on Sky Sports), expressing his disappointment before Manchester United and Chelsea played out 1-1 draw.

His comments came after a first a goalless first half, Marcus Rashford coming closest to finding the net before half time, seeing his effort smack the crossbar.

However, the match remained goalless at the interval, leaving Redknapp perplexed by the lack of noise from the home crowd.

Redknapp told his Sky colleagues Roy Keane and Frank Lampard: “It’s like watching a game in Covid. There’s no crowd, there’s no atmosphere, no energy. The players have got to do more [to get the crowd going].”

Fair to say there was quite the response from Twitter users, as fans hit out at Sky Sports pundits criticising lack of atmosphere at the Premier League match…

@SimonLester24: A lot of people have seen this interview and have come to a similar conclusion: Sky and the other broadcasters do more damage to match going fans than anything else in football. You’ve driven up the price of tickets to force good folk out of stadiums. The schedules that you come up with does nothing than inconvenience match going fans and cost them even more money. The drivel and bias that the majority of your commentators and pundits come out with isn’t reflective of what gets spoken about by real supporters. VAR…. no comments required and you merely employ ex refs to spout more garbage about a system that doesn’t work. You’ve been terrible for fans of all clubs who merely want to go to a stadium and support their chosen team.

@JuceeRob: Sky Sports moving fixtures to times when fans can’t get to/from games is a huge part of why the atmospheres are terrible.

@mitchdavis_1: It’s like this in many grounds. Main two reasons. 1. True Fans being priced out so the tourist fan will buy a ticket (not interested in generating an atmosphere) 2. Sky thinks it’s ok the change games and not even consider fans making it difficult for fans to get to games

@Joe_C92: Sky’s agenda against United today was laughable to be honest. We created more chances than Chelsea and looked like the more likely team to win during the match. If you’d not watched the game and just the pundits after the match you would think United dropped their worst performance of the season..

@Oldboatie: Anyone told Jamie we are still “in covid”?

@dzialowskimatt: Might have something to do with you lot putting every game on tele and moving them to suit your viewing figures over fans actually being able to go to games at 3pm on a Saturday

@martin_johnson9: Football is ruined. Fans priced out of the game, both at the grounds & at home. Charged extortionate prices, silly kick off times & not to mention boring football ever since pep came along with his sideways passing. Not to mention bang average punditry

@TwineeSi:
When will these thick fucks realise shite atmospheres has little to do with “energy” on the pitch.
• Local working class fans priced out
• Grounds full of tourists and corporates
• VAR ruining any enjoyment for match goers
• Stupid KO times for TV
You Sky cunts started it

@LeePazzini: Sky pointing the finger at themselves. Football has become a game for TV, the introduction of VAR when you have no clue what’s going on at the ground sums it up perfectly.

@Coatsie1: TV companies don’t help match going fans with silly kick off times. Clubs pricing fans out. Will only get worse now..

@BakerJoe21: Perhaps schedule games when it is best for fans then, rather than for broadcasters? Money first, fans second.

@PNEhomeandaway: Sky are one of the problems.

@Utd_CF: And believe it or not, Sky are the reason atmospheres in all stadiums are getting worse

@1980MLL: The Sky TV executives killed the golden goose. English football is a shell of what it once was. And as foreign fans see there’s no atmosphere any more, no real competition, no characters or passion, they’ll walk away too. Why would they want to sit quietly with other tourists?

@tomp_5: The irony is that Sky are a big part of diminishing atmospheres, especially with ridiculous kick off times

@Dannyb3216:
The overall match day experience has dropped very low
Price.
Officials.
Kick off times.
Karen’s in the crawed.
Sky sports.
And more are at blame.

@riobeare: The Premier league is so on the way out. More and more people by the week are walking away from it now. Boring football, priced ridiculously, refereed by a ref 300 miles away. Tourism filled crowds. Nothing much left to enjoy

@ColinPep1: The @SkySportsPL and @FA_PGMOL effect. Price out working class supporters. Put games on at ridiculous times of the day. Use VAR so the working class supporters who just about still find a way to go to games can’t celebrate as they once did through fear of disallowing goals

@FansAgainstVAR_: There’s no atmosphere at the majority of Premier League games. Stupid kick off times, stupid ticket prices, stupid restrictions on fan support and stupid VAR finished it years ago. It’s got to the point many fans of promoted clubs look forward to going back down.

@meds89: The irony of Sky Sports broadcasting a discussion on why atmospheres are so poor these days

@GroundhopScot: Sky Sports caused this. Turned football into a TV show focusing a global audience into 1 single league. The clubs lap this up because they get an extra few 0’s in the bank. English fans STILL sneer at every other ‘farmers league’ despite having lost their clubs identity years ago

@c1104barker: The irony of sky sports discussing this. Ridiculous ticket prices, stupid kick off times, grounds full of tourists, games moved to suit everyone other than the match going fan and Sky started it all… what on earth do you expect?

@CL9268: The fucking nerve of sky sports posting this. You lot are part of the reason atmospheres are on the decline. Stoppages every 30 seconds, VAR nonsense, awful referees, tactical systems that suck the enjoyment out of the game. All things that you want for your TV audience

@jtwHCAFC: Nerve of Sky to tweet this. They’re part of the problem by fucking around with the scheduling in the prem & EFL etc

@ready1878: Sky are the reason the games dead. Stadiums are filled with day trippers that think only the ‘top 6’ matter & that anything other than winning the league is a failure. The whole narrative has made the other clubs irrelevant & the game pointless. Along with VAR and woke nonsense

@gazbod:
Club owners: “Sky money has plateaued, need more money so get rid of season tickets and sell to plastic fans”
@SkySportsPL: “where’s the atmosphere? It’s getting so quiet as years go by”
‘Legacy’ fans: “we fucking told you this would happen!”
Grim
#CPFC

@euan__cfc: Sky have some cheek to be talking about this 😂😂 almost as if making football into a TV spectacle instead of it being an event for match going fans isn’t gonna be great for atmosphere at matches long term, absolute tourist league
