Fans debate whether Colchester player ‘punches’ Tranmere defender as footage goes viral

Fans haven taken to debate whether a Colchester player ‘punches’ the Tranmere defender as footage goes viral across social media.

Noah Chilvers’ second half penalty proved to be a big point for League Two strugglers Colchester after going down at home to Tranmere.

Joe Murphy denied Colchester striker Samson Tovide an early goal, before Tranmere took an early lead through Harvey Saunders on 13 minutes. He got onto Josh Hawkes’ through ball and put it past Kieran O’Hara.

O’Hara kept out efforts from Joel Mumbongo and Chris Merrie, with Saunders headed over, missing an opportunity to make it 2-0.

Tom Hopper missed a golden chance in the 34th minute from just three yards out after Murphy also kept out Junior Tchamadeu.

Colchester were reeling that they weren’t awarded a spot kick on the 51st minute when Tovide went down following a challenge by Murphy in the area and was booked for simulation, then Murphy twice denied Chilvers in the space of a few minutes.

The U’s got that much needed leveller on 65 minutes when Chilvers netted from the penalty spot after Josh Dacres-Cogley’s foul on Connor Hall, meaning the points were shared.

As mentioned however, fans took to debate whether Colchester player ‘punches’ Tranmere defender while footage goes viral…

Colchester head coach Ben Garner said: “We’re disappointed because we wanted to get the win but to come back again shows the spirit we’ve got and the positive today was we created so many more chances.

“We made it hard by conceding a disappointing goal from our perspective in the first half but in the second half, I was pleased with the spirit, the commitment and the effort.

“We need to add a little bit of quality in certain areas and in certain situations but we didn’t get to grips with them in the first half well enough and conceded a really soft goal.

“They played a diamond and we didn’t get to grips enough with it defensively and we changed a couple of bits at half-time and were much better in the second half.

“They had a couple of counter attacks when we were pushing for the win but we created a couple of good opportunities.”

Tranmere interim head coach Ian Dawes said: “It’s always disappointing not to win a game of football, regardless of how it goes.

“We always want to win and I think that’s got to be the mentality of our club and our players and staff.

“But at the same time, we’ve got to look at the bigger picture of how we’re playing.

“Both teams went out to win the game.

“We’re building something new here and how we want to play and I see there are some really positive outcomes.

“It’s a great foundation to work from and I can’t wait to work with them again on Monday.

“We worked really hard on getting into the final third in possession of the ball this week, because it’s so important that we get control.

“It’s then that final bit of movement and decision making in the final third, which I think this group will get better at and we’ll create more chances from it.”

@Colchesterviews: Credit to the Tranmere lad there, he goes down and acts up, the #Colchester player walks 100%. Punching the air behind a players back never wise. Well done that Tranmere player for your honesty.

@BenDJ91: Walks in this game? The ref was desperate to help you. Probably saw it and let it go.

@grey_harpoon: The ref didn’t see it so he wouldn’t walk.

@BenDJ91: Enjoy the fine and ban the fa send your way, might need to hit the gym a bit more too.

@CFCJC88: To be fair he was too busy absolutely shitting himself.

@scchambers: “Punching in air behind a players back”……😂😂😂😂

@SWA_1981: He pulls his hand away at the last instant. Davies reacts with shock but not pain. Colchester lucky that didn’t make contact.

@DanSWA96: I’m surprised Tom Davies didn’t react, whether you made contact or not. Still, very weird the way you celebrated but each to their own.

@wwitt1978:
You can see 3 things.
Intent
Execution
Reaction
If, as your follows have said there can not be a reaction as it never happened. So, intent and execution. He hits him and obviously Tom Davis is hard and not a cheat. However that was a punch.

@FTM1042: Absolute disgraceful so unprofessional and this is unsportsmanship. The FA needs to take a good hard look at this and for me a charge for the player is fully deserved it’s wrong and unacceptable it’s assault tbh

@PeterCo27578446: Surely that is a straight RED for the Colchester lad… that did not seem like punching the air from the Tranmere players face…

@Adybircher1: Should get a retrospective red for that once tje FA look at it.

@Lewiswhall: If you wanted a left hand from him, he’d be in a&e! 😂😂 just letting him know he’s won a peno.

@TheJamzter: Horrible team and horrible fan base 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

@xBJM9: Look closely, he does not hit him, he infact scares the player. Its like an optical illusion. Plus the keeper woulda hit the ground if he made contact with a punch like that.

@Clachan1GK: Well said Connor you didn’t do anything wrong at all!

@OliGiles2: Weird camera angle. Looks like he’s punched him right in the rib. But surely if he did the Tranmere fella wouldn’t still be stood there

@CP4573t5i543: But why did you do it? You looked right at him and did it… You knew he was there, it was no accident… You disguised an attempt to intimidate and scare as celebrating… Anyone who accidentally did this would apologise… No attempt at all. Pathetic. Red card imo

@trfcjames_james: Do you normally go and punch someone when you win a penalty?, you’re lucky we have an honest team as he couldve gone down and you’d be off. Don’t try and defend what you did. If the boot was on the other foot how would you react? Tit

@FerryLad: Did that to me mate I would have booted you into next week you bad bell.

@trfcultra: Absolute helmet knew exactly what you were doing

@HefinJones01: Doesn’t look like he made contact but a pretty stupid and needless thing to do.

@IAmManBearPig2: Rat. Shame he didn’t get a well deserved slap for that.

@NESWA3: Not seen many people celebrate a penalty by pretending to punch an opposition player?? Strange is all.

@TheHobbitKye: Why would you even do this as celebration? You’re just asking for trouble.

@Jay_Blogs: Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

@ytdaveyt: Bit weird, but if he made proper contact with a swing like that, he’s not just going back to putting his hands on his head again.

@longestplague: Yeah you’d have expected him to at least act as though it hurt not act as though nothing at all happened. Why would anyone make it look as though they’ve punched an opposing player on camera though

@ridds1010: Think he did it as a fake out tbh, don’t know their history but he didn’t hit him

@NickAspin4: Definitely malicious this, fair play to the tranmere player staying on his feet, think he was too shocked to react 🤣

@swindonsixties: Three match ban for violent conduct

@mattlschofield: Got the ball.

@JoeBazooooka: Can’t be doing that. Needs a retrospective ban.

@Merri_ManP: Violent conduct. Intent. Red, 5 match ban.

@billb1888: Malicious- very. Gutless coward cos he’s done it from behind – you tell me? Fact our lad’s not retaliated – priceless. @ColU_Official if one of ours did that I’d genuinely want him out. If your gonna swing for an opposition player at least have the bollocks 2 do it face to face.

@georgeredfern16: Should definitely be investigated, he knew exactly what he was doing!

@PigeonSpondon: Red card and a lengthy ban

@ShellzJackson: It’s intimidation surely! He purposely did this towards the player in Green. This is not okay. That’s not football. It’s bad behaviour

@dawkinscov1980: Oi @T_C_Davies did this twat connect?

@ben_dallimore: @EFL worth a look at this surely you can’t go round punching other players.

@past_sunderland: Get him banned

@Just_ST195: Could be seen as Malicious for sure But that defender didn’t even make a meal of it either. VAR would of sent him off for sure 😂
