Fans have come out to criticise Gary Lineker for his “laughable” and “pathetic” tweet after Man City win against PSG in the Champions League.
He has been judged to have gone a little over the top on Twitter with his evaluation of the Pep Guardiola’s side’s performance on Wednesday night.
While some agreed, the majority of his followers were quickly on his case to slam his claim, while also trying to correct him.
Lineker pulled out of Wednesday’s show at the last minute after a member of the team tested positive for Covid.
“Massively disappointed not to be on @btsport tonight for such a great game,” he posted on Twitter.
“A late shout after a positive Covid test to an important member of our team.
“Obeyed our strict social distancing guidelines, but it was decided to be ultra cautious and get tested before returning to work.”

Jake Humphrey took the reins on BT Sport for the game, giving Lineker the opportunity to watch from the comfort of his own home, no doubt with some sort of alcoholic beverage.
Though Lineker must have had more glass to many to have come up with a tweet like this.
Lineker wrote: “That was one of the best performances, in an away leg, by an English side in the history of European football. Absolutely outstanding from @ManCity 🙌🏻”
Both clubs state owned and a primary reason football is eating itself alive but yes – no other English Club who has actually won a European Cup has produced such a performance. Come on Gary, you are better than this!

You moan about the ESL in one tweet then laud City the next. You don’t think this game was a huge reason why others are trying to catch up? It’s not tribalism Gary! I just hate the hypocrisy.
— Si Steers (@sisteers) April 28, 2021
It’s not though! You are just validating it’s fine to carry on with the status quo. Football is easy when there is no margin for error isn’t it?

After going behind in the 15th minute due to Marquinhos’s opener, Man City turned the screw in the second half, though some have suggested the Premier League side scored two goals very fortunate goals.
PSG’ Mauricio Pochettino: “[It was] two accidents for the two goals. I think we feel very disappointed. It was difficult to accept that it happened in the semi-final, and that is really painful that it happened in this moment.
“We were better in the first half, but they were more consistent in second half. I think it was difficult for us to cope with the demand and the physical condition. They were a little bit more aggressive, and it was difficult for us to recover the ball, sometimes it was a lot of possession for Manchester City, and of course it made it difficult to play.
“We didn’t show the energy you need when you recover the ball to keep possession and try to force them to go deep.”
Man City boss, Pep Guardiola: “If we play shy and not who we are, then anything can happen as they have the quality to turn it around. But if we play with quality like we did in the second half maybe we’ll have the chance to reach the final.
“The first 15 minutes at Borussia Dortmund was the same, the first half at home vs Dortmund was the same. Everyone had the desire but we have to learn. It’s just the second time in our history we’re at this stages. Nearly 80 per cent of the players have never played in a Champions League semi-final. It’s not like other teams. It’s a process. I have to convince them that when we are who we are everything will be easier. Hopefully that will happen in the next game.
“You have to be aggressive against these big stars or you can’t do it. When we’re more aggressive doing a good intensity, we were different. We can be more aggressive and fluid. I was happy in the locker room after the players were just calm. Not cheering, just calm. Anything can happen in the second leg. Now we go to Crystal Palace to make an important step in the Premier League.”

I think you are mistaken Gary! Citeh played a good second half against 10 knackered men who blew themselves up. Plus, nothing to be proud of in the state owned derby, it’s why the game is in such a mess! pic.twitter.com/cGlr6OtLSV

@sisteers: Both clubs state owned and a primary reason football is eating itself alive but yes – no other English Club who has actually won a European Cup has produced such a performance. Come on Gary, you are better than this!
@travelred: I can think of two better performances by another Manchester team who don’t have the benefit of being bankrolled by a country. And who didn’t cheat.
@hanger_clifford: Steady on Gary. It was a good performance, capitalizing on two defensive errors, against renowned bottlers, in an empty stadium. City were impressive but that’s seriously OTT.
@chidilizo: MUFC at Juve, Arsenal at Inter, Liverpool at Bayern, MUFC at Barca in 99, Arsenal at Real, I can name more than 10 away games by English sides that were better than tonight’s game and didn’t rely on lucky goals
@FAFiltvedt: No, it wasn’t. Nowhere near.
@dewhirstVN: Bit much that isn’t it. They weren’t at the races for 45 minutes of the game and their goals came from a goalkeeper mistake and the worst wall i’ve seen in ages. Good performance in the second half, but it’s hardly one of the best ever 😂
@jackdobbie1: Mate we’ve won there twice in last 3 seasons and one was from 0-2 down first leg.
@Anna__Dray: I’ve seen Manchester City give better champions league performances and lose. Delete this before someone sees for God’s sake.
@LDNFootbalI: What? Abysmal first half from Man City, excellent second half but fortunate goals. The best in *history*?! Laughable.
@talks_beard: Not quite Turin in 99 though was it
@JP08895303: Fucking hell, calm down Gary
@AmarVijh: The hyperbolic nature of English commentators and journalists is getting silly now!
@ruchitrajguru: That’s unbelievably overhyped.. definitely not the best ever performances .. a long long way of that
@dannymcnulty11: Got to be taking piss
Fans continue to criticise Gary Lineker for his “laughable” and “pathetic” tweet…
@LFCJaake: Did you see the first half? 😭😭😭
@dierszn: I mean lucas moura literally scored a hattrick in 45minutes in amsterdam at the last kick of the game to send us to the final but go off i guess??
@SocksyBeast: I thought they were completely outclassed for 45mins, got a lucky equaliser and then played much better for the rest of the game. Would say it was more of an outstanding result than performance personally
@zanetalkssports: You surely can’t be serious. Have you started watching games this season? Or today? Because even the porto-juventus game was better this year
@UtdBando: On my life what the fuck is Gary on
@ManLikeAnthony1: Disgraceful tweet
@Chaz_Ainsworth: It wasn’t Gary.
@MrJacobSheppard: Yes. A cross let in directly by shambolic goalkeeping and a free-kick that the wall parted for. Utterly heroic stuff.
@LFC953: City absolutely outplayed for 50% of the game, and you’re calling it the best performance ever? I bet you and Jenas wear Pep pajamas and have fantasies about Walker
@stevehammo: Outplayed for the first 45 mins, and then scored 2 goals which were errors by their keeper and the wall. If that’s “one of the best performances, in an away leg in the history of football” then your memory is awful.
@rmbfc1: In history? You have to be taking the piss
@fake_engineer7: Stop hyping up mediocrity Gary.. City were half decent but PSG bottled it thanks to a nervy goalie and a broken wall.. I can think of away performances from English sides this season better than tonight!
@EoghanDelaney4: Somebody please put Gary to bed. It’s way past his bedtime.
@clinicalkai: Their goals were flukes 😭
@MedianoEra: Oh brother pull up your pants.
@KayethenLFC: When did you start watching football ??
@Sweeney66: That’s a bit extreme Gary 🤣
