Exeter City boss offered manager’s role at Rotherham United

Exeter City boss Matt Taylor has been offered the manager’s role at Rotherham United, currently vacant after Paul Warne left for Derby.

Taylor has confirmed the news after the Grecians’ 2-2 draw at home to Bristol Rovers in League One and said that ‘he has a decision to make’ over whether to accept the offer.

He is expected to make that in the next 24 hours, with Exeter fans hoping he will stay, but judging by what he had to say, expect him to leave.

Taylor’s side currently sit 11th in the first season back in the third tier, with 15 points from 11 games played.

Meanwhile, Alan Biggs says: “Understand Rotherham were also keen to talk to recently sacked Watford boss Rob Edwards in their manager hunt, maybe as a fail safe in case Matt Taylor says no. But seems the ex Forest Green chief in no rush to head back”

“I have a decision to make and I’ll be making that decision within the next 24 hours,” Taylor said as per Devon Live. “I have been approached and that’s all I can say – I have a decision to make.

“You have to move every now and then and you have to keep looking forward. We have had a fantastic period of time with this football club, they are a fantastic group and we have achieved incredible things, not just promotion but the development of the club which is in an absolutely fantastic position right now.

“I can’t say I am decided either way, but I have to make a decision. It comes down to family, the personnel I speak to every day in the changing room and the staff I speak to every day and it will come down to the club.

“It’d be a huge wrench to leave, absolutely massive. I have given ten years of service to the football club, four as a player, one and three quarter years as a coach and then three and a quarter years as a manager, so I have certainly done a lot for this football club and I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved alongside a lot of people at this football club.”

The game itself saw Ryan Loft grab a stoppage-time equaliser as Bristol Rovers came away with a 2-2 League One draw in an entertaining West Country derby at Exeter.

Rovers went in front on the 62nd minute after Collins rolled the ball across the face of goal and John Marquis was there to put it in at the back post.

Exeter equalised after 71 minutes when Jack Sparkes was taken down by Anthony Evans as he tried to let the ball go out for a corner and Jevani Brown fired home the penalty.

The Grecians went 2-1 up in the 82nd minute, Brown lobbed the ball forward, James Belshaw ran from his goal and missed the ball completely, leading to Sam Nombe putting the ball into an empty goal.

Rovers fought on and equalised in the second minute of time added on when the ball was stood up to the back post by Sylvester Jasper and Loft headed past Jamal Blackman from six yards for a share of the spoils.

Rotherham meanwhile lost 2-0 at home to Wigan, the Millers sit 11th in the Championship with 14 points from 10 played.

This is what fans had to say as Exeter City boss Matt Taylor gets offered the manager’s role at Rotherham United, some grecian supporters are already looking at who they want next…

@CasualGrecian68: Managers fucked off then.. #ECFC

@M14Moore: Wayne Carlisle or Rob Edwards imo #ECFC

@ecfc32: Surely we go for Rob Edwards if Taylor goes? #ecfc

@EC1901_: Rob Edwards my lord #ecfc

@Verschorenecfc: Looks like Taylor’s off… #ecfc

@ecfc32: Surely we go for Rob Edwards if Taylor goes? #ecfc

@exetercity1904: Matt Taylor if this the end, all we can say is thank you. #ECFC

@_JoshDenham: At least MT will get the backing of no rash sackings unless he does disgustingly bad at Rotherham. Back up North, closer to home, new baby and wife to think about, presumably more money and budget. Good luck to him. #ECFC

@rufc_pod: Having listened to the audio of this, he sounded like he was positive about the move. Time will tell #rufc

@rufc__cal: would take him tbf. we can’t do much better realistically

@The_RUFC: Personally I’d take Matty Taylor as manager here. He’s been a great striker for Oxford over recent years so he should be able to show the players where the onion bag is #RUFC

@Gloveaction: If he sees how we played today, he’ll have a hard time saying yes. I know we had no manager today but, no reaction today at all. Let a lackluster Wigan side walk all over us.

@deano_rufc: If we get turned down again we look really daft #rufc

@jensonecfc: been a pleasure MT 🫡

@CharlJenkinsX: I’d stay at Exeter personally 😭😂

@RTDRUFC: New low if he turns us down… #rufc

@Rufcjoe87: With all due respect to Exeter, the fact that a mod table league one manager has to have a think about whether to come to us (after one already turning us down) shows that we’re not the enticing prospect some of our fans think we are. #rufc. Also if he turns us down that means we’re on to our THIRD choice, having been rejected twice. Not a good look. Also not a vote of confidence in whoever does come in. #rufc

@jascotting: Hope he doesn’t take it. Taylor’s done us good so far, we aren’t expected to come into league 1 and win every game. People seem to forget we got promoted in second place joint points with first under his management.

@Jackvickery_: Wayne Carlisle, if he doesn’t join Matt would be the perfect replacement for me. The way he speaks in interviews you can tell he’s got what it takes, former player, part of the current team so will keep some continuity. With how we run as a club, it makes the most sense. #ecfc

@alfieash01: Thanks for the memories we’re finished

@Ljones246: PLEASE DONT GO

@JackHawker2: Do the right thing matt

@lukeohara5: Fair play to Exeter for allowing him to potentially progress up a division

@Jbunter7: Rob Edwards. #ecfc

@egerrans: This will actually break my heart if he goes – a fantastic manager and a thoroughly decent human being who has acted with utter class every time I’ve seen him. He even made the effort to come up and chat to me at a service station on the way back from Cambridge last year. Legend.
