Emotional Harborough boss gets surprise by his kids mid-interview after making FA Cup history

An emotional Harborough Town boss, Mitch Austin, gets a heartfelt surprise by his kids mid-interview after making FA Cup history.

He guided the Southern League Premier Division Central outfit to the first round proper for the first time in their history with a win over Bury.

The Shakers, who had been the lowest-ranked side left in the Fourth Qualifying Round, fell to a 1-0 defeat to league above Harborough Town with Ben Stephens getting the only goal of the game.

Interviewer: “And that’s full time here at the Beehive. I get to say the words Harborough Town one, Bury nil. Mitch, you are in. The club is in the first round proper of the FA Cup. Wow. How does that feel?”

Mitch: “It’s amazing. It’s amazing. Well, it’s hard to describe how I feel. I’m delighted for the club, first and foremost.

“I was reflecting a lot this week of having the opportunity to be the manager here and what’s happened since then and the success, after success, after success.

“And one season could be a bit of luck. I’m not saying I’m Jose. I think with the backing that the club give any football manager here, its got a great chance.

“And if you can get right with the players, have great staff like David Staff, who’s Yin and yang, you know, you have people like yourselves, unbelievable committee members, the stewards today, even stewards came here on Thursday and I had a stewards meeting and it was the one thing I didn’t want.

“I was really heartbroken when we left, when we lost a North Shields here. There was a massive occasion. I remember coming away from there thinking… oh, my God!”

At this point his kids come running towards him and he breaks down in tears.

He continues, holding his kids: “So back to that. It’s only first round proper, like I said. Look, looking back when we were talking about being interviewed now, something I want to remember for the rest of my life.

“And, you know, having these here just surprised me there, you know, I said that. That’s a tough one. That was the heartstrings, that one.

“But I’m not. I’m not upset because, you know, it’s only the first round proper. We’ve worked really hard and these sacrifice from. From me being a football manager, you know, every Saturday here, Tuesday and Thursday. If anyone deserves it, my kids do, and my missus. So let’s leave it as that, yeah? Should we wrap it up as that?”

Interviewer: “From everyone at the club. Congratulations and thank you. We’ll see you at the dog house here. Cheers.”

Mitch: “They’ve killed me there. Love it.”
