EFL players told it is likely season will NOT be finished

EFL players told it is likely season will NOT be finished as there are too many coronavirus tests needed to resume action.

The decision is reported to have been discussed at the EFL board meeting on Wednesday, where League One and League Two club captains and representatives of the PFA have been told to relay to their team-mates no more football could be played.

Not only would there be too many tests for footballers but fans are not expected to be allowed into stadiums until January, and the EFL would be worried with how it would look with their being not enough NHS and key workers to attend the matches in case of injuries suffered.

It has also emerged that a recording has been leaked from a Bristol Rovers players WhatsApp Group, where their PFA rep is telling them all the information stated in this article.

So what does that mean for how the two divisions finish?

The Express’ Luke Gardener states that players have been told that using the ‘sporting merit’ system is one of the options. That would see teams’ final standings determined by how many points they have earned per game played.

That is backed up by the Telegraph’s Jason Burt and John Percy who add that the number of tests estimated to be needed to guarantee a safe completion of the EFL season is around 66,000. This would cover the 108 Championship, 106 League One and 112 League Two games left to play but it “fears that the situation is unworkable and the campaign[s] will have to be abandoned.”

Whilst no decision has been made on the final standings, clubs in automatic promotion spots could go up with no teams going down under another system should it be based on PPG.

However the Premier League would need to agree to it and it seems a little early before any confirmation comes out.

The Premier League continue talks of their ‘Project Restart’ plan with a meeting planned for Friday and hopes of resuming the season in June, potentially behind closed doors.

If the season ends now, lower league clubs will be at greater financial risk, however some feel that it should be stopped with their being so many deaths, whilst also wanting to continue stopping the spread.

Salford co-owner Gary Neville questioned the Premier League restart plan, stating: ‘How many people have to die before it becomes unpalatable?’

This week has already seen players gradually returning to training, but will be made to wear masks.
