EFL make announcement on upcoming Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy draws

The EFL make an important announcement on the upcoming Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy draws ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The 2022/23 fixtures will be released at 9am on Thursday the 23rd of June, one week after the Premier League fixture list is revealed.

And it will be on the same day that the Carabao Cup first round and the Papa John’s Trophy group stage draw will be made.

EFL STATEMENT

As part of the EFLā€™s fixture release day on Thursday 23 June, the Round One draws for the Carabao Cup and Papa Johns Trophy Group Stage will take place live on Sky Sports News.

In an eagerly awaited day for supporters up and down the country, the respective cup draws will follow the release of fixture lists across the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two which will also be revealed on Sky Sports at 9am on the same day ā€“ with the 2022/23 Sky Bet EFL Season beginning the weekend commencing Friday 29th July.

Papa Johns Trophy

The Papa Johns Trophy Group Stage draw will take place live on Sky Sports News at 11:30am on Thursday 23 June, and will include last seasons runners up Sutton United who agonisingly lost out to Rotherham Untied in extra-time of the 2022 final at Wembley Stadium back in April.

The 16 Invited U21 teams will be placed into their respective Northern and Southern section Groups, with the 48 EFL Clubs placed into pre-determined Groups prior to the draw. Consideration has been given to ensure travel time is minimised and recovery time is maximised for players.

All EFL Clubs will play two of their three matches at home in the Group Stages, with the opening ties to take place week commencing 29 August.

Carabao Cup

The Carabao Cup Round One draw will take place live on Sky Sports News at 2:30pm on Thursday 23 June.

A total of 35 ties will be drawn for Round One, which will include EFL newcomers Stockport County and Grimsby Town.

Burnley, Watford and the Premier League Clubs that are not competing in Europe will join the competition in Round Two whilst holders Liverpool, who overcame Chelsea in last seasonā€™s final at Wembley Stadium and will be aiming for a record-breaking tenth success in the competition, will join in Round Three along with the other Premier League competing in Europe next season.

Carabao Cup Round One fixtures will take place week commencing 8 August

Thankfully, this latest statement about the draws is a good one, back on TV at a normal time and not done via time-wasting radio… for now!

Previous years, the EFL’s competitions have either been done on talkSPORT or in random locations such as Thailand, Morrisons supermarket or made by Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell live on Twitter.

Fans reacted as the EFL make an important announcement on the upcoming Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy draws…

@bobcainffc1971: Nice to see the draws for the early rounds televised again. Wondering if @FulhamFC under 21 side will be in @PapaJohnsTrophy groups again this year after missing out last season. āš½ļø

@cafc_daniel: Letā€™s hope we get someone decent

@adammorsley15: Barnsley or Wednesday away please #GTFC

@Youngy316: Hull City at home under the lights would be great. In 32 years or following town, I’ve only seen us play Hull competitively once. #gtfc

@j_atkinson04: Grimsby away please #hcafc

@itfcbrett: Buzzing to get Gillingham Colchester and West Ham U23ā€™s again

@chris_eaton_: You mean our draws are no longer squeezed into a 2 minute slot on TalkSport2? šŸ™„šŸ˜‚

@CraigWelshLTFC: Praying we get Ipswich away thatā€™ll be my dream tie

@onetakegray: Canā€™t wait for Blackpool or Morecambe away again (again) #wafc

@tashkentterror: Papa Crappa Shite Trophy. A destroyed and discredited competition. If you disagree with the amount of money and power the Premier League has, then why on earth attend one of these games? Actually, under the current format, why would you attend one at all? #bteamboycott

@onthisGTFCday: Forget the PJ Trophy but being in the league cup is a reminder that Town are back!! Itā€™s the little reminders. It was just one season, but so grateful. Never again. Last time it was the SkyBet banners on opening day behind the goals that caught my eye first šŸ–¤šŸ¤ #GTFC

@Joseph_Carr02: Grimsby or bradford please #hcafc

@MikeOfPompey: Fleetwood or Morcambe first away game please

@ThatjamieT: Grim or Harrogate would be epic. #hcafc

@nathanbcafc: Morecambe (A)

@SalopianAfro: Canā€™t wait for Bradford away.
