‘Dream come true’ – Boyhood fan Jamie Paterson on 94th minute winner for Coventry vs Portsmouth

‘Dream come true’ – Boyhood fan Jamie Paterson spoke on his 94th minute winner for Coventry vs Portsmouth on Wednesday night.

Jamie Paterson scored his first Sky Blues goal deep into stoppage time to seal a big win that boosts the Sky Blues’ Championship playoff hopes, while dealing heartbreak for a Pompey side hovering above the drop zone.

The game looked set to end in a a frustrating goalless stalemate, but then came Paterson, unleashing a beautiful volley with 22 seconds to go.

Pompey’s defence misjudged a long ball forward, Jack Rudoni sending over a floating a cross, meeting Paterson, and you could see just how much it meant for the goal scorer.

The win lifts Frank Lampard’s men into 6th place, two points above Middlesbrough, while defeat leaves Portsmouth in 17th place, three points off the drop zone.

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC Radio CWR:

“We got what we deserved. It was amazing because I thought it would be one of those nights. They were dogged and made it hard for us. But we pushed and we pushed, and for ‘Pato’ to score that goal is something very special.

“He’s a fan of the club, Coventry is him. For him to score a goal of that quality is very special. To show such agility is top level. He’s added to the group in the dressing room, and the training ground, and he gives me good options.

“It was a tough game. We hit the post, they threw their bodies in front of us, but we showed great character. If you have spirit you push to the end, so it’s a big plus for us.

“We know the race we’re in. We were looking downwards when I came in, now we’re pushing for the play-offs.”

Lampard, per Sky Sports:

“The technical nature of the goal was amazing. Great skill and great agility and finish – amazing.

“And the story of ‘Patto’ himself being a Coventry fan as a kid to being without a club, coming and training with us and earning a contract.

“He’s been brilliant around the group, on and off the pitch, and he’s a quality player, so I am delighted that I brought him on.

“I know he can score, he’s done it throughout his career, but that level of goal in that moment, I think it’s a collective one for the stadium, the players and the fans because we have shown that this group has got character.

“We have shown it a few times this season and we pushed and pushed against a really difficult opponent, it’s an edgy night for us and we started to feel that.

“We didn’t play at our best, Portsmouth didn’t allow us to, but we showed incredible character to push in the second half and got what we deserved.

“You score a goal, the fans erupt and the players are excited and their fans are distraught. We had it at Norwich so I feel for them tonight.

“But for us, it just shows at the moment the club is very, very together. And we need to keep going with that.”

Coventry City’s 94th-minute winning goalscorer Jamie Paterson speaking to Sky Sports:

“I don’t even know what to say. I bided my time, obviously been here three or four months now just waiting for that opportunity.

“I thought to myself tonight, if I come on and I get a chance to shoot, just hit it. I can’t really remember much of it’s dreams come true.”

On the goal: “It’s just come perfect for me and that feeling, it’s hard to describe it. I’ve been a season ticket holder here for years, what can you say?

“I pictured it when I signed here, if I could score and important goal, and I’ve done that today.

“I’m buzzing. Over the moon.”

Coventry City’s Jack Rudoni speaking to Sky Sports about the amount of late goals scored at the CBS Arena:

“I don’t know why, it seems to happen every time we play here. The fans are unbelievable, they get us through right to the very end.

“You can see by the atmosphere, it’s mental out here. There’s no-one better to score than that [Jamie Paterson].”

On whether he thought the winner would come: “Yeah, we had it under control. The ball came to me and just put it into a good area and the boy Pato [Paterson] was at the back stick.”

Rudoni added: “Before in the warm-up, we came over to each other and said you’re going to score today and it’s going to be a worldie and he’s gone and done it.”

Portsmouth’s John Mousinho:

“It was a really difficult one because the difference between me going into the dressing room and saying what a really good point away from home and where we are now is obviously stark, and it’s just 10 seconds of football.

“93 minutes and 50 seconds of really good football and 10 seconds of madness. But we have to be realistic about that, we can’t have those moments in games where we make really poor decisions because the poor decision ends up in the back of the net.

“They gave everything but unfortunately we’re falling short and that’s the most frustrating thing.

“I think in the last three away games where we’ve come away conceding in 85 plus minutes it’s not a fitness issue, it’s not like we look like we’re dead on our feet, we put the work in and we put some really, really solid performances in.

“I think there’s a couple who have let us down tonight but for the most part [it’s] just an excellent performance. [It] should have been an excellent away performance, we could have nicked it at the end.

“It is agony, it’s going to be, there’s been so many games this year where we’ve come away from home and we’ve been beaten. Tonight’s just one of those, it blows my mind we’ve put ourselves in that position to have to defend from that point.”
