Dramatic end to 2024 EFL Trophy Final with three goals in six minutes as Peterborough beat Wycombe

A dramatic end to the 2024 EFL Trophy Final with three goals in six minutes as Peterborough beat Wycombe 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

The first goal didn’t come until the 85th minute with Posh captain Harrison Burrows producing a piledriver at what they thought was going to be the winning goal.

Burrows lined up well with Mason-Clark on the left flank, then received the ball again, jinked away to his left and smashed the ball, taking a slight deflection went past the goalkeeper.

Sky Sports’ Dan Long at Wembley: “How gutting is that for Wycombe fans? They have done so well to cope with the Posh attack this afternoon.

“It’s a superb strike from Harrison Burrows, which shows just why clubs higher up the pyramid are taking a look at him.”

Nick Freeman (Former Wycombe midfielder on BBC Three Counties Radio): “Nice play from Ephron Mason-Clark on the right. He played it to Harrison Burrows and it was a really powerful shot. The deadlock has been broken.

“Wycombe have played really well but there was one bit of quality from Burrows – as he’s done all season. They’ve just got to throw everything at it now.”

Wycombe then went level on 89 minutes as Dale Taylor’s thunderous volley made it 1-1 and many inside the ground were expecting extra time.

Sam Avery (BBC Three Counties Radio’s Wycombe commentator): “Remarkable! Absolutely remarkable. Just when you think the Chairboys are dead and buried…

“It was cagey, it’s now completely opened up. What a finale at Wembley.”

Sky Sports’ Dan Long at Wembley: “Football, eh?! Just when you thought Wycombe were out of it, they have summoned the fight to level!

“We might just be heading for extra time here…!

Then, incredibly in added time, Harrison Burrows got his second of the game, to seal the win for Peterborough, from right out on the right touchline, and bent in a stunning cross, heading towards the back-post, and sailed over the head of goalkeeper Franco Ravazzoli.Β

Pien Meulensteen (Commentator on Sky Sports): “That is absolutely outrageous from Harrison Burrows. This a dream day for him and could that be the goal that wins it for Peterborough?

“Precision, perfection from Harrison Burrows and heartbreak all over again for Wycombe Wanderers.”

Sky Sports’ Dan Long at Wembley: “Scratch that! What a game this has turned out to be.

Former Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth at Wembley Stadium: “Fair play. There has to be a loser. That was a great win for Posh today.”

Former Peterborough striker Aaron McLean at Wembley Stadium: “Winning can give them a huge boost to kick on for promotion.”

Peterborough captain Harrison Burrows speaking to Sky Sports:

“I’m a bit speechless. I’m so happy, I can’t put the emotions I’m feeling into words.

“They banged on some big threats. We didn’t deal with it well but to react with a goal…

“I never imagined this would happen. As I said before the game, it’s a dream come true.

“It would definitely be big momentum for us and now our focus turns to the league and we believe we can do it.”
