Donation page set up for Scunthorpe player injured in Huntingdon train stabbing attack

A donation page has been set up for Scunthorpe player Jonathan Gjoshe injured in the Huntingdon train stabbing attack on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old defender was on a London-bound train in Huntingdon where he sustained a non-life-threatening slash to the bicep, required surgery, and remains in hospital.

A GoFundMe page, set up by the Iron Bru podcast, has raised over £3,000 in 24 hours to cover care, transport, and lost earnings during recovery.

Scunthorpe United issued a statement wishing Gjoshe and all 11 victims a full recovery, with manager Andy Butler called it “an awful thing” and pledged full support from the club.

@jameshoggarth tweeted: From Howard Pirie – the chair of Bottesford Town, who Jonathan Gjoshe played for on Saturday. He tells me that he spoke to him at 1030pm last night from his hospital bed, Jonathan was “quiet” – and one of the first to be attacked. Howard didn’t tell his players until today #Iron

The Go Fund Me page reads:

“Iron Bru is fundraising for Scunthorpe United player, Jonathan Gjoshe, after he was injured in the appalling Huntingdon train stabbing on Saturday evening.

“Monies raised will go towards any adjustments that need to be made in the form of care, transport costs and loss of earnings while Jonathan recovers from his injuries.

Gjoshe signed for Scunthorpe in September after spending the majority of pre-season with the Iron.

From the club’s website: “Scunthorpe United can announce the signing of defender Jonathan Gjoshe on non-contract terms.

The 22-year-old has been with the club throughout pre-season and the opening month of the campaign, and did feature in some of United’s warm-up matches.

Most recently at Corinthian Casuals, Gjoshe has also had spells with Spelthorne Sports, Colliers Wood, Walton and Hersham, Chipstead, Kingstonian and Hanworth Villa, with the non-contract nature of the agreement seeing the full-back provide cover following the injuries and suspensions of Jean Belehouan, Oli Rose and Joe Starbuck, respectively.

Last season, Gjoshe won young player of the year at Corinthian Casuals.”

I’m sure all Iron fans and football fans around the country will join us in wishing Jonathan a speedy recovery and the best for the future, along with all the people affected by this horrific attack.

From the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cev18p1gwp2o

‘A professional footballer was injured during the stabbing attack on a London-bound train on Saturday evening.

Scunthorpe United player Jonathan Gjoshe “sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack”, the club said.

He was slashed across the bicep and had an operation in hospital, where he remains, the club told the BBC.

A man has been charged after 11 people were injured during the attack in Huntingdon.

In a statement, the National League side said: “Everyone at the club, from the board, management and his team-mates, along with all staff behind the scenes, sends our heartfelt well wishes to Jonathan for a full recovery, which is also extended to all the victims on board the train.”‘

Iron boss Andy Butler said of the incident: “It’s not life-threatening, but he’s had an operation on the part of his body now.

“The club obviously stand by him for all the players, want to wish him all the very best for recovery.

“He hasn’t been able to access his phone yet, I think the police took all devices away from people. So we haven’t had any contact with him yet, we know through his family.

“We just want to wish him all the best, it’s an awful thing to happen. It’s close to home, really does.

“We’re trained from Doncaster to London, but we can confirm it’s Jonathan that’s been involved in it. The club will be backing him step of the way in terms of recovery. We just hope that Jonathan feels OK.”

Asked if he has spoken to Bottesford as well about his situation, he replied: “Yeah, I spoke to Lee and let him know, update him on what’s happened.

“Yeah, the players are all tight, so it does impact you. It doesn’t affect the team, it affects the whole country and what’s happening.

“So, yeah, it’s awful to see. Hopefully we can we can help Jonathan recover because it’s not just a physical side, it’ll be a mental side of it, I expect.

“Just a thank you to obviously the police and the emergency service for everything they’ve done and thankful for the brave LNER staff member who put his life at risk and also the brave Nottingham Forest fans who also helped out.

“So everyone that’s helped there, so much gratitude towards them because we speak about it in the office, a fight or flight moment, and in that moment, how do you actually respond to that? How do you actually react?

“And there’s some brave people out there, some really brave people which shouldn’t go unnoticed. They should be commended for all their actions, especially the LNER, who I think is fighting for his life, which is awful. Awful, you should never go to work during your life.”
