Diego Carlos gets sent off after moment of madness brawl in Aston Villa’s friendly with Leipzig

Diego Carlos gets sent off after a moment of madness brawl in Aston Villa’s friendly with RB Leipzig, played in New Jersey.

It took 17 minutes for Andre Silva to break the deadlock, then Lois Openda doubled the Bundesliga side’s advantage just before half time.

It was inexcusable for Carlos, booked twice after altercations with the same player about 15 minutes apart.

Carlos’ first yellow came after blocking Openda off the ball. Then shortly after Openda turned to Carlos with both exchanging heated words. The Brazilian reacted negatively to it, placing his arm across Openda’s chest, the centre-forward fell to the ground, and led to nearly all players on the field getting involved in the altercation.

The referee had a tough time trying to restore order, but ultimately, after the situation calmed, he had no choice but to issue a second yellow card to Carlos.

Unai Eery said post-match: “We are in preseason and practicing with the team and progressively getting better.

“Today was a match against an opponent of the level we will face in the season. It was a test.

“In the first half I think we were good, even losing 2-0 due to two mistakes. One goal was a clear offside.

“We are trying to contest with ourselves some tactical work and after the red card it was a completely different match.”

Aston Villa correspondent for Birmingham Mail, John Townley, said: “Carlos always puts himself about and was surprisingly only booked four times in the Premier League last season. He collected half of that total in the space of around 15 minutes against Leipzig.

“He lost the battle with Openda after falling into a trap which he simply didn’t need to entertain in a pre-season match. There was absolutely no need to pick a fight.

“Carlos likes to get physical because few forwards can get one over on him in that department, but Openda was clever. Nearly halfway through the first half, the Villa defender blocked Openda off the ball, to which the striker reacted furiously and picked up a booking. So did Carlos.

“Later in the first half, with Leipzig one goal up at this point and Robin Olsen replaced due to a head injury, Openda doubled the lead. After forcing the ball past Oliwier Zych, Openda turned to Carlos and gave him some verbals before falling to the floor as Carlos appeared to put his arm across the striker’s chest.

“At half-time, Carlos was seen running several sprints across the length of the pitch as a member of Villa’s coaching team timed him a few yards inside the touchline.”

Aston Villa: Olsen (Zych 30’), Cash (Nedeljkovic 61’), Carlos, Torres (Bogarde 68’), Digne (Maatsen 45’), Onana (Dendoncker 61’), Barkley (Tielemans 45’), McGinn (Barrenechea 61’), Iling Jr (Ramsey 45’ (Moreno 77’), Rogers (Buendia 61’), Bailey (Philogene 45’).

Unused subs: Gauci, Feeney, Kesler Hayden, Dobbin, Archer.

This is how fans reacted as Diego Carlos gets sent off after moment of madness brawl in Aston Villa’s friendly with Leipzig…

@JB_2024: Diego Carlos is a weird one. Had one of the best games I’ve seen in my time from a Villa centre back against Arsenal away, but always looks like he could fuck literally everything up in a split second. #AVFC

@zk16204: Diego Carlos is normally good for a yellow card or two, but to actually get a red in a pre-season friendly is pretty special 🤦‍♀️ surely we must be looking to upgrade on him if a club will buy him and free up the squad space #avfc

@JBaker_24: Diego Carlos was a loose cannon majority of last season & was lucky probably on 3/4 occasions not to get sent off, he’s not what we need. Huge upgrade on him required

@politic1983: Diego Carlos owes me 3 hours sleep.

@JakeAlberice:
Pre season takeaways:
– Diego Carlos is lacking brain cells and we need a new CB
– Onana and Maatsen are both excellent footballers
– Kosta Nedeljković is a better RB than Matty Cash
– Lamare Bogarde is an outstanding prospect (could stay and get games at CB?
#AVFC

@DavidBraley90: Diego Carlos looks awful right now, looks like he wants to be anywhere else but playing for Villa.

@JackJenningss_:
Just never got going, and then it was always gonna be hard with 10 men, silly from Diego Carlos.
Positives to take:
Didn’t concede second half
Onana, Torres, Maatsen and others look good.
Great to see Ramsey back on the pitch, and more minutes for Buendia.
Poor viewing. #AVFC

@JayVtid: Pre-season results and performances aren’t to be read into too deeply. That said, any frustration anyone has with Diego Carlos is fully justified. Emery would have wanted to work on things with a complete XI. Instead it became a different exercise with 10 men. Waste of a game.

@DanM_AVFC: All things considered we didn’t play bad in the second half. Diego Carlos is a knobhead.

@JacUTV16: Diego Carlos is a championship level cb built like Harvey price fuck off back to Sevilla

@ScottBratt: Diego Carlos cannot be a Villa player come the start of the season. A below average player and the biggest liability going. Get him gone. #AVFC

@JayAVFCJohno: Diego carlos that is dreadful! Should be clearing it there and then after goal gets sent off in a friendly ffs! #AVFC

@JackUTV95: Diego Carlos has been an idiot on and off the pitch today. #AVFC

@AVFC_Tom1: Diego Carlos really wants to be sold 😂

@The_Tache_: Ffs. Villa are fucking appalling. Diego Carlos has now ruined this game.

@nnctwt: Diego Carlos first class trip back to the favelas. I will pay for it me myself

@TheVillaVision: I know this is a friendly, but this is painful. 2-0 down, and a man sent off. Diego Carlos attitude has been awful.

@LampsFIFA: Diego Carlos LMAOOO what is wrong with you man

@_ThatAnt_: Diego Carlos is a waste of space

@Porsalin: There’s a very uncomfortable conversation that needs to be had about Diego Carlos.

@AVFCMidge: This is why I’ll continue to say Diego Carlos is dog shit, he’s got absolutely zero discipline. Time and time again we’ll see him getting involved in stupid drama or giving away cheap fouls, he’s absolutely miles off the standard of the football Unai wants. #avfc
