Derek Adams frustrated as he makes concerning admission on tough times at Morecambe

Manager Derek Adams has been left frustrated as he makes a concerning admission on experiencing tough times at Morecambe.

He has expressed his thoughts over the financial challenges the League Two bottom side has faced, stating that the club’s debt has increased from £200,000 to £800,000 per year, with the additional funds not being allocated to the football side of the business or improving the team.

This was shared in a post on Twitter from BBC Sport Lancashire, highlighting Adams’ concerns about the club’s financial mismanagement and its impact on the team’s performance.

Additionally, in an article from the Lancaster Guardian, Adams admitted that he found the job at Morecambe more difficult than he initially anticipated, reflecting the tough conditions at the club which are likely exacerbated by these financial issues.

These admissions underscore the challenging environment Adams is working in at Morecambe, with financial constraints significantly impacting the club’s operations and his ability to manage the team effectively.

Derek Adams said to BBC Radio Lancashire: “Think that the supporters understand that, you know, the way that we’re having to cut a cloth accordingly.

“The football department is having to really, help the rest of the football club. You got to remember the football club went into debt of £800,000 per year. Is that correct? And, that was done, you know, in the previous, regimes.

“Now people have moved on. We spoke about that last week. A statement went out.

“Why has the football club gone from losing £200,000 to losing £800,000 per year? It’s not gone in the football side of the business. So where has this money gone?

“It’s not going to improve the football team. So we’ve got to look at that, you know, aspect of it all and if you’ve got the bottom budget, in the league, then you can only go and get 23 players. We can’t just go and get 16 players because we’re gonna have injuries, we’re gonna have suspensions. And, you’ve got to act prudently, and that’s what we had to do.

“And we put together, you know, an outfit that was capable, and we are capable. We’ve got players that are capable of, you know, doing well.

“We have got injuries at this moment in time to, like, Angol and Edwards, which, you know, is disrupting things because we were able to change things, in that forward area. But, you know, come January, you know, we’ll all look to strengthen. You’re asking where the money’s gone.

“I know what the answer is, but, it’s just for me to clarify that point to, everyone out there because it’s important that, you know, there’s a transparency, in everything. You know, we’ve, obviously, as a football team this year, had really good cup runs. We’re probably gonna make close to £500,000 profit from the cup runs this season.

“So it’s a lot of money but that money has to go somewhere else to help the business run. And, you know, it is difficult and, you know, we know what we’ve got to do and we’re working hard to do it.

“So the players, the staff, behind the scenes, you know, are are keeping the the football side going. We need to pick up more wins. We need to hit the target more. We know that, and, we need to be better, in stopping the errors, at the back.”

Interviewer: “You know the answer, but you can’t share it, you say, really?”

Adams: “No. I can’t. Listen, the supporters out there know what the answer is. You know, there’s a lot of them that are very close to the football club. And, you know, they know what the answer is.

Interviewer: “So in terms of, the coming games, is it about somehow getting some kind of run together?

Adams: “Yeah, back to back wins would be great, but you gotta start by getting draws and wins, draws and wins, clawing yourself back. At this moment in time, it’s wins we need. Draws, can be good at some point in the season, but at this moment in time, 3 points are the ones that propel you up that league quickly. And, we know how many wins we need now in the end of the season. We haven’t done it so far. We’ve been very close in a number of occasions. But, we can’t just talk about it. We have to go and do it. We have to get, the wins that are gonna get us, you know, further up the league.”

Interviewer: “Is this your biggest ever managerial challenge? I feel like I’m asking you this quite regularly, Derek.”

Adams: “Yeah. I mean, I was asked that before and, you know, I’ve had a lot of tough challenges in in my career. It’s another tough challenge. We we understand that. But, you know, it’s something that, we work, you know, day in, day out to do. And, you know, it’s really enjoyable. And, we just have to to to start turning, you know, our performances at times in the game into taking that chances.”

Interviewer: “I think you hinted after the national Saturday that the challenge was bigger than you thought it would be when you returned to the club this time.”

Adams: “Yeah. I mean, I did because, the gap in League Two has got bigger. The gap, financially, has got bigger. And it’s just trying to, you know, take in the players that we could. They’ve done fantastically well, to put us, a number of points. And we should have more points than we do. We don’t at this moment in time, but it’s up to us to change that and make us better.”

Derek Adams also said, per Lancaster Guardian: “I’m as frustrated as the fans.

“I’m standing on the touchline and working ever so hard every day to try and make things better.

“I knew, when I came back here, how difficult it was but I didn’t think it would be as difficult as it has been.

“We have been competitive in games this season but we have lacked quality and quality costs you money – and unfortunately we haven’t had that.

“We had to put a squad together and we put 23 players together in the summer and, if we hadn’t done that, I don’t know where we would be.

“We might be even further behind than we are, but we are where we are at this moment in time and we have to do a lot better.

“I take responsibility as the manager and the players are taking responsibility for that too.

“They are trying their best and I think you can see that by the effort they are putting in, but we haven’t had the quality.

“It’s really, really hard and we have shown at times this season that we have the ability to match most teams – but not enough times – and we all have to keep on fighting.

“Investment will help us but when is it going to come? Until then, it is time for the players to find the quality they do have on a more regular basis.”

Morecambe fans react to surprise statement from prospective purchaser of the club

Here’s how fans reacted with Derek Adams frustrated as he makes a concerning admission on tough times at Morecambe…

@Roland_Rat_Red: Sounds familiar hey @so69fangroup where has the money gone….? Good interview and bravely honest where he could be

@mashrimp16: #JasonOut 🦐⚽️

@rooobellis: Time to build a statue if he keeps us up again. Sigh.

@CallCrookes: “Can we just enjoy our day out?”

@GazPar81: Whittingham bleeding us dry

@joephelan44: I love this man ! What a big big mess we are in but yet this lad in charge there’s still that possibility of staying in the league

@mickeymfc: Just another day at the circus.

@timrichards2000: But only a few fans take action… embarrassing that it’s reached this point

@jamiekay1613: We are actually finished man.. this cunt needs to go now.

@jamiekay1613: Honestly the only way around this is to get games delayed or even better called off we need to make headline news instead of listening to the BOD pretending everything is fine!!! We need to save our club if we carry on this way we WILL lose it!! 😡😡🍻

@CRparker88: We keep being told by the chairman that Jason can’t take money out of the club, so how is this happening? 🤥

@jim_bell17: He’s gonna walk in February isn’t he

@MorecambeFCFeed:
Nothing that we didn’t already know, we were making losses under Jim of that magnitude most years.
But…
– Well done to Derek for saying it.
– Absolutely horrendous that he has to, and that he’s the only one being transparent.
– Limited cup money going to Jan, as expected

@thescreenster: It’s unbelievable that there are fans who have been against this man because of his style of play. In all of his three spells with us he’s always looked out for the club’s best interests. No one in football deserves some investment more than him

@scottliam33: I really can’t understand how some fans want him gone… Derek has always done what’s best for the club and with no budget he’s had to build a squad from nothing! Fair play for speaking his mind and saying it like it is.

@cylertarter: Once AGAIN the only communication we are getting out of the clubs comes from the manager who’s probably been lied to about what kind of budget he’ll have to work with. Won’t blame him if he walks again
