Derby County fans’ new song about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing divides opinion

Derby County fans’ new song about their player Nathaniel Mendez-Laing sung at Morecambe earlier in midweek seemingly divides opinion.

There is some love for it with a number of people saying it had got stuck in their head, while others cringed and said they never wanted to hear it again.

The clip, which was uploaded on Tuesday night, has had over 40,000 views on social media, getting over 1,000 likes in the process. Have a listen of it for yourselves…

The game meanwhile, saw Derby miss two penalties as they were held to a 1-1 League One draw by battling Morecambe.

Connor Ripley prevented James Collins and David McGoldrick from scoring their spot-kicks either side of the break, with Paul Warne’s team grateful to Louie Sibley for securing the point with a goal on the 59th minute.

The first penalty miss came in the 37th minute when Collins saw his effort saved by Ripley after Lewis Dobbin was bundled over in the box by Anthony O’Connor’s challenge.

Morecambe pressed forward and they went ahead in first-half added time. Adam Mayor, starting his first League One match, finding Jensen Weir on the edge of the area and the Brighton loanee volleyed home into the bottom left hand corner of Joe Wildsmith’s goal.

Derby began the second half on the front foot, with Collins volleying against the crossbar and saw his follow-up shot handled by Ryan Delaney for a second penalty.

McGoldrick stepped up but again Ripley kept it out with another brilliant save.

Ripley was beaten nearly on the hour mark when Sibley’s shot from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection off a Morecambe defender to fly into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Back to the chant now and it’s not the first to have had included a player’s penis size, with Man Utd asked to consider banning a song about Romelu Lukaku, which is sung to the tune of ‘Made of Stone’ by the Stone Roses.

Paul Ince has claimed that he doesn’t see the song referring to Romelu Lukaku’s penis as racist.

Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out described that particular chant, which suggests that the Belgian has “a 24-inch penis”, as “offensive and discriminatory” for using the ethnic stereotype that black men have large penises.

Ince, who enjoyed a memorable six-year spell at Old Trafford, believes that the song is a bit of fun, but admits that it may be deemed obscene by some fans at the ground.

He told Paddy Power News: “Personally, I don’t think the chant is racist. I honestly think it’s a group of fans that have got carried away and did not expect the backlash they have got. I’d say it’s just a bit of fun, that’s got out of control now.

“For a player to hear that sung about themselves, I do think they’d think it was amusing, a bit of a laugh. If this chant was being sang at me when I was playing, I would just laugh it off and that would be it. Fans have sung chants for years and far worse than that in my time, though I suppose a lot of them would have never been heard because of social media.

“But, to be honest, it’s not just about Romelu Lukaku and how he feels about it. It’s also about how other people in the stadium might feel hearing that, children, elderly people and families. It’s not something you should be singing anyway. Whether it’s racist or not – which I think is a massive grey area – from a club point of view fans shouldn’t be singing that.”
