Demoted Prem ref Anthony Taylor slammed over ‘stinker’ penalty decision in Championship

Demoted Prem ref Anthony Taylor has been slammed again over a ‘stinker’ penalty decision in the Championship at the weekend.

Fans quickly took to social media, calling out the mistakes of Taylor, who is under pressure, sent to officiate in the second tier for the first time in four years.

This came after awarding Newcastle a controversial penalty against Wolves back in October.

The 45 year old hit the headlines again after he gave Preston a penalty in their Championship fixture with the Sky Blues.

A few weeks ago, Taylor was criticised by fans, managers and pundits after giving Newcastle a spot kick at Molineux, with it allowing Newcastle to go ahead in the first-half.

The referee made the decision with Hwang Hee-chan deemed to have brought down Fabian Schar while attempting to clear the ball, and had his call confirmed by VAR.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil now often expresses his frustration, becoming outspoken on refereeing issues after Wolves had been on the receiving end of two more controversial decisions against Man Utd and Luton this season – calling Taylor’s call ‘scandalous’.

‘(Newcastle’s) second goal was never ever a penalty, ever,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘It was a terrible decision on-field and from VAR (but) we managed to bounce back.’

Taylor now finds himself part of another controversial decision, during the first-half of Preston’s clash with Coventry, Kyle McFadzean was adjudged to have brought down Milutin Osmajic inside the box.

This saw Taylor giving a penalty, much to the confusion of McFadzean and the commentator.

Replays showed that the defender had made minimal contact with Alan Browne going on to score the spot-kick – and then the hosts won 3-2.

Taylor isn’t first Premier League official this season to be demoted to the Championship following due to decision making.

Adrian Holmes had been sent to run the line during Millwall’s home match against Hull back in October – having incorrectly deemed Luis Diaz’s goal offside during the much-discussed VAR chaos when Liverpool travelled to Tottenham.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins said, as per Lancashire Post: ā€œI think there was definitely nervousness. First half we were pretty poor, we couldnā€™t really get out and they had a lot of the ball and their intent was clear. Ours wasnā€™t; we couldnā€™t move it. We turned the ball over too much, but then we took the lead – probably against the run of play.

ā€œBut then youā€™ve got a cushion and a starting point, and then within two minutes weā€™re 2-1 down and it just seems like ridiculous decisions – certainly the second one was offside. Initially the first movement is offside and then heā€™s given a penalty on the back of it, but two wrongs donā€™t make a right. Thankfully he didnā€™t get sent off, because he could have easily been shown a red card as itā€™s denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

ā€œThe second half was chalk and cheese really, it was a proverbial game of two halves, and we showed the intent that our team shows generally and has done for years and weā€™ve got to hold on to that. The second half performance was pretty good, apart from the goal that we conceded. The three goals we conceded were soft. They were poor, so thatā€™s got to improve, but we looked better.ā€

Preston boss Ryan Lowe meanwhile said, as per Lancashire Post: ā€œI have got loads of faith in the group that they will manage the game as best as they can,ā€ said Lowe. ā€œIt was like a basketball match at one point, but they are doing everything we ask and credit to the players. On the sideline, sometimes emotion run high but you have to stay calm and hope the lads take on the instructions – which they did. It is a relief when you get that third goal, but they are never going to lie down.

ā€œThey are going to fight and thatā€™s what they did, so we had to show a different side to us again. Iā€™m disappointed with their second goal because it shouldnā€™t get to that. But I am just pleased for the lads; theyā€™ve been working hard and putting in the performances in, but not getting the results. So, to take three points off a good team in Coventry is pleasing. The lads showed a huge reaction and determination to keep going.

ā€œDecisions are decisions and will happen throughout the Championship, but weā€™ve just got to make sure ours are the right ones. I know you would love me to burst out with a load of stuff now. Iā€™ve got my own opinions, which will stay with me. Luckily for us, we got the penalty and we scored it. Coventry are a fantastic team and if we wanted to beat them, we had to outrun them. Iā€™d like to think we worked our socks off. It was different formations and getting the crowd up.

ā€œWe were tempted to play a different shape today, with how Coventry are, but I felt weā€™d go for the formation which has gotten us the results – two tens, one striker but Mads pushing up as a false nine if needed. Duane would come inside with Browney as two eights, so it was a tactical game really and you have to counteract each other. They changed shape second half, so then we had to flip round. When youā€™re coming up against good teams, youā€™ve got to make sure youā€™re ready and our start was well-worthy.ā€

Twitter users reacted with the demoted Prem ref Anthony Taylor slammed over a ‘stinker’ penalty decision in the Championship…

@Mase_w19: Standard of refs in the league is a joke regardless if heā€™s a prem ref. Theyā€™re all crap

@prakash85: A Premier League ref here šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ inept and corrupt @FA_PGMOL

@aloadofoldshirt: It’s the arrogance he gets these decisions wrong with for me. He absolutely thinks he’s 100% right every single time and won’t have any sort of questions asked for him.

@jaymeeteewhu98: Anthony Taylor making a shocker of a decision in the Championship after being dropped from the PL? Heā€™ll be refereeing Sunday league by the end of November!

@JordanSMonk: He pretends to fall so that he can have some kind of excuse to grab onto him and try to get away with it.

@Ricey_17: Anthony Taylor demoted to the championship last week then has this howler at the weekend šŸ˜³

@PursuitOfTruthB: Wowā€¦. Again, I canā€™t believe thereā€™s corruption in football. The logical side of my brain canā€™t accept that. But then I think of the levels of money involved. And looking at some of these decisions in isolation really does make you wonder sometimes.

@natashaeveritt7: Anthony Taylor refereeing his first game in the Champ in 4 years after his blunder at Wolves went well then šŸŒš

@alexgildeatrott: Anthony Taylor will be reffing in League 2 if he carries on. Imaging giving this as a pen in the game youā€™ve been demoted from the PL šŸ˜‚

@mattyTFccfc: I think itā€™s taken a few days and a few different angles to fully comprehend how bad a decision this was. Silky from Fadz to fall over, but he brushes his shoulder, no more. Absolutely horrendous decision and when I first saw it I almost thought it was the right call #pusb

@simontodd89: Still canā€™t believe this was given as a penalty and the worst thing is the ref was back in the Premier League yesterday. (albeit as a fourth official)

@GlassesCraig: Just getting embarrassing the officiating in this league

@josh_seager: Anthony Taylor needs sacking. Heā€™s a truly dreadful official in any league heā€™s put in.
