Windass made the announcement after his side were beaten 2-1 by Barton Town on Saturday afternoon.

He has thanked the club for the opportunity given to him to become their chairman, but unfortunately admitted that he felt he couldn’t take the club any further.

“Disappointing day because we got beat 2-1, an own goal in the last 10 minutes,” said Windass on Twitter.

“Just a quick post to say that we have come to an agreement with the owners of the football club. It is a mutual agreement really, with the financial situation of the football club.

“Because the ground is owned by the council, we can’t really take the club any further so I have decided to walk away. Thank you very much for the opportunity, but it is better for all parties, let them deal with that situation, I have got enough going on in my life.

“Thank you very much for the opportunity, I enjoyed the game today, we were unlucky to get beat but good luck for the rest of the season.”

In his latest Twitter post, Windass explained that he got “devastating news” at the weekend that he would rather keep private.
