Dave Challinor takes issue with fans walking out; Stockport lose on penalties to Leyton Orient

Dave Challinor takes issue with fans walking out; with Stockport going on to lose their playoff 2nd leg on penalties to Leyton Orient.

The League One fixture ended with Ethan Galbraith’s penalty sending Richie Wellens’ side to the play-off final, where they will play either Charlton or Wycombe.

Isaac Olaofe saw his flick cancelled out Ollie O’Neill’s opener, and with the aggregate scoreline at 3-3, the game to extra time.

Neither could score, so penalty shootout it was to settle this one. The O’s winning 4-1, Jack Diamond’s spot kick was saved by Orient goalkeeper Jack Keeley, and Ryan Rydel’s saw his effort come back off the inside of the left-hand post. Ethan Galbraith remained composed and ran over to the away end who were going wild.

Leyton Orient goalkeeper Josh Keeley speaking to Sky Sports:

“I can’t believe it, it’s a dream come true.

“Everyone wrote us off but look at us, now we’re in the final.”

Leyton Orient captain Omar Beckles speaking to Sky Sports:

“We don’t believe we’ve come into the play-offs to make up the numbers.

“We know we’ve overachieved, it’s going to be an incredible day out for the fans.

“They’ve gone through so much over the years and it’ll be an unbelievable achievement.

“It’ll be incredible for me, a local lad, to take them to the Championship where they belong I believe.”

Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens speaking to Sky Sports:

“When you go to penalties it’s a lottery but it’s our fourth time this year.

“I spoke to the players before the penalties, I said have faith in your goalkeeper, he’s one of the best I’ve seen at saving penalties.

“If you ever feel that moment of doubt, slow your breathing down, get that technique and hit the target, we executed them really well.

“We’ve primed them, we knew it might not be a 90-minute game, it might be 120, or even longer, it’s a late night.

“We’ve had enough practice in the cups, I’m proud of the group, I thought we were very naive in our play at time tonight, but we’ve got a lot of young players who will grow from this.”

Leyton Orient striker Charlie Kelman speaking to Sky Sports:

“I’ve been vocal about the gaffer, I think he’s going to go right to the top.

“The way he sets up different game plans for different teams, he deserves a massive amount of credit for the recruitment that he’s done and as soon as I met him I knew I was coming back.

“He promised me games and I promised him 20 goals and look where we are – we’re going to Wembley.”

Stockport manager Dave Challinor

“I’ll get my little rant out the way first. My biggest disappointment is watching people walk out the stadium when it’s 3-1 and giving up.

“I’ve not said it all through the season, but I’ve seen that throughout the course of the season, people walking out.

“When these players have given everything and got themselves into a really good good position. Um and there’s nothing if if the players gave up with 5 minutes to go, we wouldn’t be in the position that we the position that we are.

“So that’s that’s the biggest disappointment tonight. The second biggest disappointment is our start. Like I say to concede a goal in the manner that we did when we spoken about those things.

“We were not lucky to be in the game. We had some good chances in the first half but just didn’t feel right.

“Second half I thought we were we were very good and next time we were very good. And we’ve had the two big moments um and in the 90th minute and 120th minute haven’t taken their moments which again ultimately then it means that it ends in disappointment.”

Speaking to Sky Sports, he added:

“It’s tough, especially in the manner of losing the game on penalties. We’ve not progressed but we’ve done brilliantly to get into this situation.

“I’m super proud of what we’ve done, I think you saw like in the game last night, moments can decide games, I think the goal we conceded was poor, it was a sloppy one from us.

“We had the two big moments and we had to take one of those chances, that is a bit of a hangover going into the penalties.

“Anything can happen in that, over the last three weeks watching us take penalties, I would back us but this is a unique situation you have to put yourself in.

“Credit to Leyton Orient they scored all theirs.

“We’ve worked on penalties over the last three weeks, I’ll choose on what I’ve seen and I was really confident there.

“The extra time and penalties comes down to the mental side of things, everyone is tired and worked their socks off.

“You trust your technique, but maybe that was the only bit the was missing.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Dave Challinor takes issue with fans walking out; while Stockport lose on penalties to Leyton Orient…

@HollMCR: No one near me left at 3-1

@chris_eaton_: He’s spot on. Stay to the end.

@Jpt4876: Disagree, poor by DC

@chris_eaton_: You can disagree all you like. He’s sticking up for our players by saying that they’ve worked incredibly hard to finish on 87pts, only to see people leaving the stadium before we’ve technically lost. It’s embarrassing.

@Jpt4876: He didn’t have to get up at 6am and kids in school, he is out of order

@County18831: I personally didn’t see people rushing for the exits mid pens? Everyone around me in LT3 stayed until the end and clapped the lads afterwards

@PhilCounty1883: There were people heading for the exits at the back of the Lower Tier when Rydel’s penalty hit the post. They deserve to be called out.

@amcscfc: That lot were just Part Time, Johnny Come Lately Bandwagon Jumpers, barely even football fans the lot of em. Don’t fret Gaffer, The Hardcore will be here to cheer the lads on again next year! Was a season to be Proud of 💙 Up the Mighty Fkin Hatters 👊🏽⚽💙 @StockportCounty

@OldManWinter999: Probably because they were all glory hunters who’d have ran on the pitch if they won

@BrettAngellsle1: Bit naughty from Dave that, the teams been followed all over the country in large numbers all season..people can be gutted and think I just want to get out of here…it means everything to people and i know I couldn’t wait to get out of there

@CrossyBert: Alot of people with kids aswell who most likely just want to get home, it’s bad enough getting away from the ground now with the roundabout being shut.

@casualco: Not even a bit naughty. Quite annoying and untrue. I didn’t see anyone leave early and why would they? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe ask yourself why we didn’t win that in normal time. Them taking us to pens was insulting.

@Jbradbury86: At 3-1 on pens its more or less done! I stayed but to look over and see the orient fans celebrating was a massive kick in the rocks!!!

@scfc07: I left just after the last penalty, clapped as I was walking out. I was absolutely gutted. I’m the one who will still be here supporting this club when you are long gone. It’s a bit harsh having a pop at fans to be fair.

@JonnyPickerin98: Needs to chill out going at fans.

@PaulDeakin1: Some fans leave early at all clubs. I understand the view expressed but not all fans live in Stockport and many have work the next day. Sky need their interviews but maybe the club could wait longer when emotions are high. It’s been a great season. Thank you to everyone at SCFC.

@worsleyscfc: A few fans leaving early doesn’t mean we don’t care. Feels like a cheap shot when most of us stayed and clapped the team off. Disappointed in that.

@markhzll: Big misjudgement that. I left straight after the last penalty to scramble to get the overnight coach home from Manchester to MK. I walked in home at 5.25, to be starting work again at 8. To hear this… sorry Dave, you’re wrong. So very wrong.

@AwayDayHatter: Classless from Challinor that, which is very unusual. He got that wrong. And if that is his stance and he isn’t happy, he needs a word with some of his players that just walk off at full time week in week out. It’s abit hypocritical

@MattWhittaker78: Pretty poor from Dave, some fans at all clubs Duck out a few mins early whatever the score for various reasons. Some will do that on away days after hours of travel, are they bad fans? Ultimately, the fans who leave early will still be there when chally leaves for big money.

@rh0de5: Nearly 11 at night. My 11 yo head exams the next day. Sorry.

@darkoparko11: Never a good look to turn on the fans. Watched on TV and the vocal backing all night was excellent 👍

@BrownlowJr: Not sure the fans deserved that, some people leave games early win lose or draw.

@lucyshatwell: slightly harsh after you’re always banging on on socials that “we’re the 12th man” “you couldn’t do it without us” “the fans deserve a proper performance” don’t blame the fans from the same frustration we all share DC, think we’ve done our fare share of commitment recently.

@EditzLouis: Harsh on the fans but true and it’s been happening all season with people leaving and I’m more shocked that people left today but some praise needs to be put on us surely

@red___square: A tad disingenuous from DC, was pretty late, kids have to be up for school, last trains were leaving

@Daz00000000: As an Orient fan, if this was at your ground and you won on penalties I would also leave, my emotions couldn’t take watching another team celebrating at our home. DC has completely misjudged this
