Darwin Nunez shushes Southampton fans’ chants and escapes red card in Liverpool win

Darwin Nunez shushes Southampton fans and escapes a red card in the 3-1 Liverpool win at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Darwin Nunez got a yellow card for his cynical foul on Kyle Walker-Peters, which former Premier League referee Mike Dean thought was the right decision.

The came shortly after Liverpool conceded the opening goal with VAR checking and confirmed the on-field decision of a yellow card.

Southampton supporters voiced their displeasure towards Nunez, saying he is a “sh*t Andy Carroll”. However, this tactic ultimately backfired with Nunez having the last laugh.

Similar chants were heard around St Mary’s Stadium back in December during the Carabao Cup quarter-final, where Nunez scored the opening goal and responded with a shushing gesture that silenced the crowd.

Just six minutes into the second half, Nunez converted a cross from Luis Diaz, bringing the Reds back to parity.

He celebrated the goal with another shushing gesture directed at the away supporters, effectively silencing the taunts and Carroll references.

Shortly after, Nunez was involved once more, winning a penalty that was successfully converted by Mohamed Salah.

Salah later scored from the penalty spot again after VAR confirmed another foul, ensuring Liverpool secured a decisive 3-1 victory.

Southampton boss Ivan Juric, speaking to BBC Sport: “They reacted really well. We had really good moments of the first half. I think the [first] penalty was not a penalty and that changed the match. I am satisfied with how we played today.

“This cannot be a penalty ever. I’m sorry it happened because it was 1-1 and it changed the match a little bit. We have lots of young players who want to grow up and improve.

“We can lose but we have to fight like we fight today.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to BBC MOTD: “It’s a sign of a good team that you can win in different ways. It was a poor performance first half – not only because of the way we played but also because of the energy we brought.

“The only good thing in the first 45 minutes was that they saved their energy [for Paris St-Germain on Tuesday] and didn’t run at all!

“I know these players are capable of doing much, much better. That is what I expect this week. They were not the energy levels I am used to with these players.”

On his side’s 16 point lead at the top: “It’s 16 for now but that can be down to seven by the time we play Everton in a few weeks [Arsenal have three Premier League games before Liverpool next play in the top-flight].

Slot, speaking to Sky Sports: “We had to be patient for a goal. It was a very poor performance first half. We were not in the game at all. It didn’t come as a surprise to me that we conceded. We found a way to win the game in the second half.

“In the end I had to make some hard decisions at half time to create some anger. The three that came in did really well but I could see from the other eight they were different.

“I am fully aware you cannot play high intensity for 38 games. Sometimes you have to find another way to win. Hopefully the first half was a warning sign. The good thing is we probably didn’t run that much.[before facing Paris St-Germain on Tuesday].”

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, speaking to Premier League Productions: “Southampton had a good game plan.”

What did the manager say at half-time? “It was a bit of frustration. His head was going for us. We were sloppy and slow in the first half. I don’t think we played good today. If you want to win the Champions League or Premier League you have to win these games like that.”

Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “In my eyes, it’s just my job to come on and influence the game where I can.

“The last two games have been very tough – it is not about me, it’s about the whole team.

“It was an intense game. Especially with the travel, we only had one day to prepare for this game and hats off to Southampton – they made it tough throughout the whole game.

“We need to keep winning games – it’s as simple as that.

“It’s about taking it game-by-game and making sure we apply ourselves in the best possible way.”

Twitter users reacted after Darwin Nunez shushes Southampton fans’ chants and escapes a red card in the Liverpool win…

@MattHookway: If a Southampton player took a swing at a Liverpool player the way Nunez did on Walker Peters their fans would be demanding he was arrested and charged… #saintsfc

@terrypward: Nunez: clearly a level above us and a decent player… but giving our fans the sssshhhh after scoring from his 345th attempt was a bit lolz. #saintsfc

@GazzSmith4: Just watched the highlights. I’m not going to argue with the result, however, and I am sorry, but neither pens are given up the other end, and if a Saints player did what Darwin Nunez did, it would have been a red. Simple as that. #saintsfc

@MRankin8_: Can’t help but feel we didn’t do much wrong there. On the end of a horrific decision to award the penalty for 2-1, another example of VAR failing to intervene to correct a clear error. It won’t get spoke about though as it’s only little old Southampton. #SaintsFC

@T214Murray: Southampton can feel very hard done by decisions today. Superb first half – how Nunez is still on the pitch I don’t know. Incredibly soft penalty, Fernandes hauled down and no foul. For the record unfortunate as it was Sugawara handball was a pen #Saintsfc

@Sir_Wigster: This is a joke the referee goes to look at the screen regarding a penalty for Liverpool but Nunez kicks out at KWP and he doesn’t go to look at the screen for that though…. Pure pure corruption #SaintsFC

@Flynny_06: Footballer scores and gives it back to the fans who have been heckling him all game. Weird though 😆

@Hxzzam: That nunez challenge is far worse than what liam roberts did, he has no intention for the ball and has purely gone to hurt walker peters there, how that isn’t a red is simply beyond me #SaintsFC

@GroundhopperNew: That’s me done watching @BBCMOTD. Not one thing on Southampton. Penalty and Nunez decisions could have been looked at but swept under the carpet because Liverpool won and are going to win the tittle. How boring.. 😴

@SDMorpeth: Nunez should’ve been sent off, so shouldn’t have been on the pitch to score. Also, if he wasn’t on the pitch, they wouldn’t have been awarded a pen. The 2nd pen wouldn’t have been given if it was 4 Southampton. Don’t ever tell me the @premierleague are handing Liverpool the title
