Darwin Nunez jumps into crowd and starts fighting with Colombia fans to protect his family from being attacked.
It all came after Uruguay’s 1-0 semi-final defeat to Colombia in the Copa America, Jefferson Lerma scoring the game’s only goal in the first half.
Mexican referee Cesar Ramos blew the full time whistle, with Nunez and Ronald Araujo were among the Uruguay players running over to a section of Colombia supporters inside the Bank of America Stadium.
The situation quickly escalated, Nunez involved in fighting with Colombia fans, before police stepped in to try and separate the two groups.

Supposedly drunk Colombia fans ‘avalanched’ the families of the Uruguayan players which is when Darwin & other players went up to the stands to fight them. pic.twitter.com/0zsK7xy1PH

Uruguay captain Jose Gimenez stated that his teammates got involved to try and protect their families from being ‘attacked’ during the game.
‘Please, I ask you to be careful. Families are in the stands. Our families are in danger. This is a disaster,’ Gimenez told Directv.
‘We had to rush into the stands to get our loved ones out, there were people with new-born babies.
‘I hope those who are organising this are careful. Our families are suffering.
‘I hope they are careful and this doesn’t happen again because it is a disaster.
‘I hope they [the broadcaster] don’t cut off what I am saying. There were no police, they arrived late. This is the fault of two or three people who had one drink too many.’
The two teams and coaching staff on the pitch also clashed after the final whistle. Luis Suarez was among the players at the centre of it, sparking a row with Colombia striker Miguel Borja.
It will be Colombia v Argentina in the final of the Copa America at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday evening.

Darwin Nunez potentially faces up to either a CONMEBOL or FIFA punishment after the ugly scenes, with a full investigation being launched.
As seen in the videos, he later consoling his young son on the pitch when the melee had calmed, having initially gone up into the area where his partner, Lorena Manas, was watching.
A report from El Pais claims claimed relatives of midfielder Manuel Ugarte were hurt during the incident, and he could be consoling them on the field shortly after.
El Pais report: “When the Uruguayan players realised what was happening, they ran to the stands to help their families, and immediately started fighting with the Colombians.
“There were exchanges of blows and kicks between the Uruguayan players and the Colombian fans who attacked their families in the stands, and there were no police and the security personnel were unable to put an order.
“Some Uruguayans were severely injured and there were minutes of great concern because there seemed to be nothing to indicate that the riots were going to stop, since the crowd of Colombians did not stop in their attack on the Uruguayans present there.
“Some of those who got the biggest scare were Manuel Ugarte’s relatives, who received attention when they were able to enter the playing field and calm down with the Uruguayan player.”
A CONMEBOL statement read: “Conmebol strongly condemns any act of violence that occurs in soccer Our work is based on the conviction that football connects and unites us, through its positive values.
“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their teams and having an unforgettable party.”
This is how Twitter suers reacted as Darwin Nunez jumps into the crowd and starts fighting with Colombia fans to protect his family…
@KaneDowell11: Hate to say it but Darwin Nunez will get a long ban! In principle what he was doing was correct to protect his family but as we all know professional football you cannot do that. However don’t understand how it all works with FIFA/FA/Premier League – they have there own rules
@DanielDean44Rck: Why don’t the organisers allow the families to sit with the executives etc this happens so much even with England once too
@rubystrent: Nunez getting a long ban for protecting his family would be insane. The stadium’s security team is 100% at fault in this.
@DaviesDarren: Im backing Darwin Nunez last night. Anyone would do what he did if they thought their family was in trouble. He doesn’t deserve a ban. It’s the lack of security for players’ families that were wrong.
@scouse_ali: What have I woke up to?? Awful scenes! Respect to Nunez for protecting his family. Fuck what people think, he went into protection mode and got physical. Love him even more now. Glad they are all ok ❤️
@btodd_13: For anyone this morning slating Nunez, if people were launching bottles etc and your family and team mates/friends family members, ask yourself this, would you stand there and just watch? When there was no security at all?!
@Mikeyccfc: Good for him for defending his family.
@jheath_afc: Family first. He’s got his priorities straight. Respect.
@hayleywhispers: It’s giving Eric Dier
@Eoin_Wysey: Colombian fans were attacking his family, not surprised he started throwing
@NBradjordan: It’s South American football. This is a normal Wednesday
