Darren Ferguson slams referee Andrew Kitchen as Dean Holden defends Jes Rak-Sakyi who was seen punching a Peterborough player.
The Charlton boss said post-match that his play ‘reacted naturally’ to being stamped on in the second half at the Weston Homes Stadium.
After being kicked midway through the game, the Crystal Palace loanee could been seen lashing out back at Posh’s Josh Knight, with the later getting sent off and somehow Rak-Sakyi only receiving a yellow.
RED CARD! Knight is sent off for kicking out on the ground. Charlton man gets a yellow for his retaliation. Thoughts? #pufc #cafc pic.twitter.com/ziiaasOHTo

Surely this is a red card for both? How is a punch only a yellow card. Refereeing standards are at an all time low in England #pufc #cafc https://t.co/psoo4QqWbd pic.twitter.com/i8Ji1q4YQA

The caution means that because the referee witnessed the incident and retrospective punishment cannot be handed out.
The Addicks couldn’t take advantage of their opponents being a man down, as they settled for a goalless draw, which leaves. Peterborough 8th with 51 points, 8 points from the League One playoffs. Charlton are 13th with 41 points.
Asked about the incident, Holden went on to explain to London News Online: “I’ve only seen the one angle. I didn’t see it. I’m not giving it the Arsene Wenger, I didn’t see it at the time. The fourth official had already told me their player was getting a red and ours was getting a yellow. At that point I’m in with my coaching staff about how we’ll approach it in a gameplan.
“I’ve seen it back on one angle. Jes has told me he just shrugged him off him. It looked like he swung something, but Jes is saying he swung a forearm to push him away from him. He’s gone on the floor, four days after the weekend where he nearly got his leg broken, and he’s been stamped on.
“We want our players to be law abiding at all times but after being stamped on it’s difficult to keep your cool. If you’re stamped on, you want someone to get away from you. It’s a natural reaction.”

“We started the game excellently,” added Holden.
“We came with a gameplan. What we’ve seen recently, we’ve needed so many more final-third entries and we got that. We got runners in behind. We got into some really good areas. Recently we’ve been getting into those areas and running back, passing it back. We wanted to sustain attacks and deliver the balls into the box. Some really good deliveries but we just couldn’t get on the end of it.
“Start of the second half, again we were excellent. We got on the front foot for 10 minutes or so but then they got the red card and the game changes in how they then approach it. The spaces to run into wasn’t there once the sending off happened. You’re playing for 35 minutes against 10 men, people think it’s easy but it wasn’t because there’s no space. You’re looking for moments of quality.
“We had a few of them, in fairness. Overall, our finishing wasn’t quite at the level, it was erratic and we slashed at a few things. But we’ve played a lot worse than that and won.”
Posh boss Darren Ferguson fumed, saying to Peterborough Today: “It’s a red (for Knight), but it’s got to be two reds. Rak-Sakyi has thrown his body at him. The referee felt it was only a tap on the chest, but it was WWE stuff. It’s one of the most bizarre decisions I’ve seen. To make a decision that one is a red and one is a yellow is beyond me.
“It was just a coming together and Josh has been a bit foolish in raising his boot, but nothing like what Rak-Sakyi did. He’s thrown his whole self at Josh’s face right in front of the referee and he has deemed it a booking.
“That was consistent with how bad he was all night.
“Everyone could see he got the big decisions wrong. In the first half Ephron Mason-Clark has gone in the box and been fouled. We felt it was a penalty, but the referee said he was fouled outside of the box and yet he didn’t give a foul! That’s the inconsistency we’re dealing with. Everyone can see he didn’t have a great night.”
Ferguson added: “It is what it is, there’s nothing we can do about it now, it’s a bit silly from Josh to do that, but Frankie Kent came on and did ever so well, as they were bombarding the box and he won his headers.
“Maybe Frankie coming out of the team and freshening up will be a good thing. He’ll come back into the team.”

Here’s what fans said while Darren Ferguson slams the referee as Dean Holden defends Rak-Sakyi punching the opposing Peterborough player…
@RaonNaCuile: Red for both
@Sweeney95Alex: Little sympathy to be honest what is Knight doing
@AshDoncaster: Should be a ref for both, maybe from the angle the ref is, he only sees the first kick out. The ref can only give what he sees. He doesn’t have the luxury of VAR.
@spennjy66: JRS lucky not to see red & I’m a Charlton fan
@JD_pufc: Two reds there, shocking to only get a yellow for a punch/slap
@BerridgeP4: So disappointing from Knight having worked hard to get back in the team but it’s the correct decision. Charlton player was the wrong decision it should have been a straight red.
@thephilsmith:
Weirdly… but based on the ‘logic’ that the officials have used, that should have been:
1.) Rak-Sakyi yellow (he brings knight down)
2.) Knight yellow (he retaliated)
3.) Rak-Sakyi red (extreme violent conduct)
@the_boro_boys: @EFL sort your refs out
@orr_gareth: My thoughts on that one is that if the referee see that then they would of given Josh Knight a straight yellow card and Charlton Athletic would of given a straight red card by kicking and hitting Josh Knight on the ground and Charlton Athletic would of been down to 10 men instead
@BrendanTaylor87: Knights barely even done anything, just pushed him off with his leg, hardly enough for a red. However the reaction from Charlton player is 100% a red. Piss poor
@darrentimmsgolf: Looks a red to both but need to see it from the other angle. Does he hit his chest or his face? Either way the instigator is definitely a red. Play acting as well as kicking out.
@JamesGi59737643: The level of quality of the EFL refs are absolutely shambolic
@lew66whu1: How the fuck has the charlton player not walked for that 🤣🤣🤣
@SWFCJR: so this bloke can jaw someone and only get a yellow but marvin johnson shrugs off wes burns who goes down like he’s been shot and gets a 3 match ban for violence ye makes sense
@CottsDanny: surely this needs looking at we all know you like to use video evidence to punish clubs and players after the incident
@jamiestfc78: Good to see inconsistent refereeing continues across EFL 👀🙈.. Who knew a push is clearly worse than a punch #stfc #incompetent #incontinent
@Michaelhall1234: We don’t see enough proper punches thrown in football, sick of all the pushing and squaring up
@DM6298: Rak-Sakyi v Tommy fury 15th June confirmed
@tegsyjack: Rak Sakyi has defo got away with one there. If you’re a posh fan you’ve got every right to be annoyed at the decision making there. That said the extra made no bloody difference anyway!! #cafc
@JackWilmshurst9: @FA_PGMOL @FAspokesperson @EFL @SkyBetLeagueOne kidding me right ref clearly hasn’t seen what the charlton lad did or he would be off if your banning Johnson 3 games for an supposed elbow from iPhone 1 footage this is been caught on sky cameras !!!! Act quick !!! #swfc @swfc
@JosephO__: Wonder if FA will look into this like they did Johnson?? One to look out for #SWFC
@fozzy_chris: Oh my god that’s hilarious. He literally lamps knight but knight gets sent off!!!!!! Where do they keep finding these absolute clowns 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
@AllEnglandFlags: Refereeing standards are lower than low in this country. Howard Webb will make absolutely no difference in changing it either.
